Hi. The mountain range that you see in the background of these two pictures, is the Santa Pola mountain range (Spain) in the municipality of Santa Pola. The curious thing about this mountain range is that it has a biological origin. It is formed by coral fossils from 6 million years ago. It is a platform of about 5 km in diameter and 144 m high, formed by calcium carbonate. It is one of the few examples of fossil atolls found in the world.
Hola. La sierra que se ve al fondo de estas dos fotografías, es la sierra de Santa Pola (España) en el municipio de Santa Pola. Lo curioso de esta sierra es, que tiene un origen biológico. Está formada por fósiles coralinos de hace 6 millones de años. Es una plataforma de unos 5 km de diámetro y 144 m de altura, formada por carbonato cálcico. Es uno de los poco ejemplos de ‘atolón’ fósil encontrados en el mundo.
All this is explained to you if you go to visit the CIMAR (Marine Research Center) located at the foot of the Santa Pola mountain range and a few meters from the sea. To inaugurate it, the structure of an old carabinieri barracks built in the 20s of the last century (Torre d'Enmig Barracks) was adapted. It is a research center managed by the University of Alicante. When you enter the first thing you see is a whale rib that was found lying near some garbage containers 😂.
Todo esto y más cosas te lo explican si vas a visitar el CIMAR (Centro de Investigaciones Marinas) situado a las faldas de la sierra de Santa Pola y a escasos metros del mar. Para inaugurarlo, se adecuó la estructura de un antiguo cuartel de carabineros construido en los años 20 del siglo pasado (Cuartel de la Torre d’Enmig). Es un centro de investigación gestionado por la Universidad de Alicante. Al entrar lo primero que se ve es, una costilla de ballena que encontraron tirada cerca de unos contenedores de basura 😂.
The center has adequate facilities for its activities such as a specialized library, research and practice laboratories, conference room and exhibition hall about the marine life of the area. These are some photos of the exhibition hall.
El centro, consta de instalaciones adecuadas a sus actividades como biblioteca especializada, laboratorios de investigación y de prácticas, aula de conferencias y sala de exposiciones sobre la vida marina de la zona. Estas son algunas fotos de la sala de exposiciones.
