La capital del vermut / The capital of vermouth

Vermouth, an aromatic liqueur made from a combination of wine, absinthe and spices, is much more than just a drink: it is a cultural symbol. The city of Reus, in the province of Tarragona, is the undisputed vermouth capital of Spain, where this tradition has become part of the local gastronomic heritage. In Reus, making vermouth is not a trade, it is an art passed down from generation to generation. Centuries-old brands such as Rofes and Miró have contributed to making Reus vermouth one of the most prestigious in the world. The Vermouth Museum, with its impressive collection of more than 200 varieties, is testimony to this rich heritage.
Vermouth time is around midday, before lunch, and it is customary to go to the iconic Plaça del Mercdal (market square) for vermouth. While you sip your vermouth, you enjoy the views of the square surrounded by impressive modernist architecture, such as the well-known Navàs house. I always order red vermouth and they serve it with ice, an olive on a stick and a slice of orange. It is also very typical to order it with soda, soda pop or lemon Fanta. For a snack with the drink, typical are olives and chips, but you can also order something more elaborate like chipirones or patatas bravas.
It's been a long time since I've enjoyed having a vermouth in Reus in the best company in the world. A real pleasure that I recommend to do at least once in your life if you have the chance.
