Visiting the Bolivarian Museum

On my last trip to Caracas, I discovered that this is a city full of great treasures, since this city, with more than 400 years of history, has traveled many paths, but one of the most epic was the one that began with a process of emancipation, which resulted in the liberation of six countries on the continent. Today, we can recount this story with complete naturalness, but the truth behind such a heroic feat is that it was a very complex military and social movement, which claimed the lives of many people but left us with a present that is free of ties and, at the same time, full of anecdotes.

Visitando el Museo Bolivariano

En mi último viaje a Caracas descubrí que esta se trata de una ciudad llena de grandes tesoros, puesto que esta ciudad con sus más de 400 años de historia ha transitado por múltiples caminos, pero uno de los más épicos fue aquel que inició con un proceso emancipador, el cual dio como resultado la liberación de seis países del continente. Lo cual hoy en día podríamos narrar con total naturalidad, pero la verdad detrás de una gesta tan heroica como esta es que se trató de un movimiento militar y social muy complejo, el cual se cobró la vida de muchas personas, pero nos legó un presente libre de ataduras y al mismo tiempo lleno de anécdotas.

General and Liberator Simón Bolívar is undoubtedly the driving force behind the patriotic victories on the battlefield, but behind him were thousands of men and women who made up the Liberation armies that left these Caribbean lands, crossed the Andes, and reached the south, each with their own story, with a different face and a unique way of thinking, but marching in unison.
El General y Libertador Simón Bolívar, es sin duda alguna la mente conductora detrás de las victorias patriotas en el campo de batalla, pero detrás de él miles de hombres y mujeres conformaban los ejércitos Libertadores que partieron de estas tierras caribeñas, cruzaron los Andes y llegaron al sur, cada uno de ellos con su propia historia, con un rostro diferente un pensamiento

Most of the great generals were Venezuelan and, as expected, in Venezuela they are honored, remembered with admiration, and their treasures are jealously guarded. This is how we arrive at the Bolivarian Museum, a space initially dedicated to the figure of the Liberator, but over the years its exhibition wings have opened up to a more complete horizon, in which we can consider Bolivarianism not as a personalized identity, but as an idea under which great armies were led along the path of freedom.
La mayoría de los grandes generales eran venezolanos y, como era de esperarse, en Venezuela se les rinden todos los honores, se les recuerda con admiración y se protegen sus tesoros con mucho recelo. Es de esta forma como llegamos a las inmediaciones del Museo Bolivariano, un espacio inicialmente dedicado a la figura del Libertador, pero con el pasar de los años sus alas de exposiciones se han abierto hacia un horizonte más completo, en el cual podemos considerar el bolivarianismo no como una identidad personalizada, sino como una idea bajo la cual se condujo a grandes ejércitos por la senda de la Libertad.

This is how we find rooms full of swords, sabers, and rifles, many of them belonging to such iconic figures as Rafael Urdaneta, Antonio José de Sucre, José Antonio Páez, José Tadeo Monagas, and Ezequiel Zamora. Perhaps many of these names seem discordant when placed on a timeline, but they are perfectly coherent when grouped according to their original ideal.
Es de esta forma como encontramos salas repletas de espadas, sables y fusiles, muchos de ellos pertenecientes a figuras tan icónicas como Rafael Urdaneta, Antonio José de Sucre, José Antonio Páez, José Tadeo Monagas o Ezequiel Zamora. Quizás muchos de estos nombres se han discordantes al plasmarlos sobre una línea de tiempo, pero son perfectamente coherentes cuando los agrupamos según su ideal originario.

This is not a museum of replicas and graphic representations; it is a space that stands out for showing us historical reality. Most of the pieces on display here were wielded by the men who fought in such epic battles as Ayacucho, Bomboná, Pichincha, Boyacá, and Carabobo.
Este no es un museo de réplicas y representaciones gráficas, es un espacio que se destaca por mostrarnos la realidad histórica. La mayoría de las piezas aquí expuestas fueron empuñadas por aquellos hombres que lucharon en batallas tan épicas como Ayacucho, Bomboná, Pichincha, Boyacá o Carabobo.

One of the factors that most caught my attention when visiting this museum is that it is located inside an old colonial mansion, but its interior is filled with modern shelves, excellent lighting, and great air conditioning, which not only allows us to observe every detail of the pieces on display, but I presume also helps to keep them in excellent condition.
Uno de los factores que más llamó mi atención al visitar este museo, es que él mismo se encuentra dentro de la estructura de una vieja casona colonial, pero su interior está repleto de estanterías modernas, excelente iluminación y una gran climatización artificial, la cual no solo nos permite observar cada detalle de las piezas expuestas, sino que presumo que al mismo tiempo ayuda a que las mismas se mantengan en excelentes condiciones.

Of course, there are also spaces dedicated solely and exclusively to the figure of Simón Bolívar, the Liberator. As we walk through the rooms, we can see clothing worn by him 200 years ago, but we also find interesting items such as desks, pens, shoes, and manuscripts that evoke this character, who is not someone idyllic, but has become part of our everyday life.

Por supuesto que también existen espacios dedicados única y exclusivamente a la figura de Libertador Simón Bolívar, mientras caminamos entre las salas podremos observar prendas textiles utilizadas por él hace 200 años, pero también nos encontraremos con elementos tan interesantes como escritorios, plumas zapatos o manuscritos que evocan a ese personaje que no es alguien idílico, sino que se ha vuelto parte de nuestra cotidianidad.

There is also a rather interesting and curious space where we can see the funerary elements used to preserve the Liberator's body over the years, including a lead urn, a wooden urn, and various textile remains found inside the sarcophagus. In addition, there is an area that explains in detail and in a very easy way the entire forensic process carried out on the Liberator's body years ago, which not only corroborated his identity but also revealed his true face for the first time.

También existe un espacio bastante interesante y al mismo tiempo curioso, en donde nos encontraremos con los elementos funerarios utilizados para preservar el cuerpo de Libertador a lo largo de los años, es de esta forma como podremos observar una urna de plomo, una de madera y diferentes restos de material textil encontrado dentro de dicho sarcófagos. Además, existe un área capaz de explicarnos a detalle y de manera muy fácil todo el proceso forense llevado a cabo sobre el cuerpo de libertador hacía años atrás, con lo cual no solo se corroboraba su identidad, sino que por primera vez se daría a conocer su verdadero rostro.

Among the many facets of this museum, I was surprised to find elements of colonial Caracas, where you can see some coats of arms from the period and pieces used during that historical period, reminding us that we are inside an old house, a space that before becoming a museum was surely the residence of a wealthy family, which left its essence, memories, and energy here.
Entre las múltiples facetas de este museo, me sorprendió encontrar elementos de la Caracas colonial, en donde se pueden ver algunos escudos de la época y piezas utilizadas durante ese periodo histórico, lo cual nos recuerda que estamos dentro de una casa vieja, un espacio que antes de ser museo seguramente fue una residencia de alguna familia adinerada, la cual dejó acá su esencia, sus recuerdos y energías.

We can also see large patriotic paintings; these are large-scale artistic elements capable of conveying an impressive force. Among my favorites is La Muerte de Atanasio Girardot (The Death of Atanasio Girardot), painted by the master Cristóbal Rojas, which reminds us that the love of freedom transcends borders, nationalities, and races.
También podremos observar grandes cuadros de pinturas patrióticas; se trata de elementos artísticos de gran tamaño, capaces de transmitir una fuerza impresionante. Entre mis favoritos puedo destacar La Muerte de Atanasio Girardot, pintado por el maestro Cristóbal Rojas, en donde se nos recuerda que el amor por la libertad trasciende fronteras, nacionalidades y razas.

Walking through this old mansion is like entering a world where history becomes legend, where reality and magic are part of the same narrative. Here, idols become real and the objects they owned in life are amulets charged with supernatural energy. With all this, I want to convey to you that this museum goes beyond traditional standards; it is a space dedicated to greatness, honor, and futuristic thinking. Therefore, we will not find a monotonous and boring tour, but rather an endless array of curiosities and anecdotes that will make us dream big and give us the strength to continue dreaming that a totally free world is possible.

Recorrer esta vieja casona deja de entrarse en un mundo en donde la historia se convierte en leyenda, en donde la realidad y la magia son parte de un mismo texto narrativo, acá los ídolos se vuelven reales y los objetos que ellos poseían en vida son amuletos cargados de una energía supranatural. Con todo esto quiero transmitirle a ustedes que este museo va más allá de los estándares tradicionales, es un espacio dedicado a la grandeza, al honor y al pensamiento futurista. Por lo cual, no nos encontraremos con un paseo monótono y aburrido, sino con un sinfín de curiosidades y anécdotas que nos harán soñar en grande y nos darán las fuerzas necesarias para seguir soñando en que un mundo totalmente libre si es posible.
