Saman Square

La Fría is a fairly small city, but it is deeply shaped by the warmth of the Andes, the warmth provided by its proximity to Lake Maracaibo, and the tenacious, fighting spirit that characterizes Venezuelans, and it is in this way that all the elements underlying this land seem to be marked by that same pattern, resulting in iconic places, incredible stories, and historical anecdotes that transcend time.

En La Plaza el Saman

La Fría es una ciudad bastante pequeña, pero se encuentra profundamente marcada por la cordialidad de los Andes, el calor que le brinda su cercanía al lago de Maracaibo y el espíritu aguerrido y luchador que caracteriza al ciudadano venezolano, y es de esta forma como todos los elementos que subyacen en esta tierra parecieran estar marcados por ese mismo patrón, dando como resultado lugares icónicos, historias increíbles y anécdotas históricas que trascienden a través del tiempo.

In this context, today I come to stroll through one of the city’s icons; it is the Plaza del Samán, located on Calle 2—the city’s most commercial and important thoroughfare—but at the same time, we are also standing in front of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the city’s most significant religious site, which daily welcomes hundreds of parishioners seeking a bit of spiritual peace and earthly forgiveness.

Bajo este contexto, hoy vengo a pasear por uno de los iconos de la ciudad; se trata de la Plaza del Samán, la cual se encuentra ubicada sobre la calle 2, es decir, la arteria vial más comercial e importante de la ciudad, pero al mismo tiempo también estamos frente a la iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, la cual es el recinto religioso más relevante de la ciudad, el cual a diario acoge a cientos de feligreses que buscan un poco de paz espiritual y perdón terrenal.

As its name suggests, the center of the plaza is crowned by a massive saman tree, which has stood in that same spot for years, bearing witness to the most significant transformations of this entire urban center. Even in its early years, this location housed the passenger terminal, a place where locals and visitors alike forged individual and collective stories; here, destinies parted ways and lives were reunited.

Como su nombre lo indica, el centro de la plaza se encuentra coronado por un enorme samán, el cual lleva años en esa misma posición, siendo testigo de las transformaciones más importantes de todo este centro urbano. Incluso durante sus primeros años, este punto geográfico albergaba al terminal de pasajeros, un lugar en donde propios y visitantes forjaron historias individuales y colectivas; aquí se separaron destinos y se reencontraron vidas.

Over the years, the bus station was moved to another location, and the square was built in honor of that tree, which withstood vast amounts of carbon monoxide, constant noise, stifled tears, and euphoric laughter. Paradoxically, the square’s geographical location makes it one of the most important spots in the city; moreover, as a curious fact, in this city, Plaza Bolívar is not located in front of the church, does not mark the epicenter of society, nor does it have as much history as this one.

Con el pasar de los años, el terminal fue movido a otra locación y la plaza fue levantada en honor a aquel árbol que soportó grandes cantidades de monóxido de carbono, un bullicio constante, lágrimas ahogadas y risas eufóricas. Paradójicamente, la posición geográfica de esta plaza la coloca como uno de los puntos más importantes; además, como dato curioso, en esta ciudad la plaza Bolívar no está frente a la iglesia, no marca el epicentro de la sociedad ni cuenta con tanta historia como esta.

Beyond being a natural and historical monument, the plaza is a meeting place, a spot where we can stop for a few minutes, sit on a bench, and rest after a long walk under a 40-degree sun. It seems incredible, but here the atmosphere is always cool, the people are friendly, and tranquility reigns above all else.

Más allá de ser un monumento natural e histórico, la plaza es un lugar de encuentro, un punto en donde podemos parar unos minutos, sentarnos en una banca y reposar después de una larga caminata bajo un sol de 40 grados. Parece increíble, pero aquí el ambiente siempre es fresco, hombres permanentes y la tranquilidad prima sobre todas las cosas.

Although there are some commercial establishments and government offices in the vicinity, the overall atmosphere is peaceful—quite busy, yet the foot traffic does not disturb the tranquility of the place in the slightest.

Si bien nos encontramos alrededor con algunos establecimientos comerciales y dependencias gubernamentales, en términos generales se vive un ambiente pacífico, bastante concurrido, pero se trata de un transitar que no altera en lo absoluto la tranquilidad del lugar.

In all my years, I can say that this is a true oasis, a little paradise in the middle of a city that has grown uncontrollably—a city that has even become somewhat hostile—but which, upon approaching the park, returns to its roots and origins.

En todos mis años de vida puedo afirmar que este es un verdadero oasis, un pequeño paraíso en medio de una ciudad que ha crecido de manera descontrolada, la cual incluso ha llegado a ser un tanto hostil, pero que al acercarse al samán vuelve a sus raíces y orígenes.

Every time I walk through downtown, this place becomes a must-stop; when I’m on foot, it’s the perfect spot to sit down, have a refreshing drink, take a deep breath, and lose myself in my thoughts and ideas. But at the end of that fleeting moment of ecstasy, I find myself with renewed strength, which allows me to continue taking the necessary steps to reach my destination with peace of mind, filled with the positivity conveyed by nature, which grows unstoppably, prevailing over the changes and cruelties of humanity.

Cada vez que transito por el centro, esta se convierte en una parada obligatoria; cuando voy a pie, aquí encuentro el lugar ideal para sentarme y tomar una bebida refrescante, respirar profundamente y perderme en algunos pensamientos e ideas. Pero al final de ese momento efímero de éxtasis, me encuentro con una fuerza renovada, la cual me permite seguir dando los pasos necesarios para poder llegar con tranquilidad a mi destino, plagado de esa positividad transmitida por una naturaleza que crece de manera indetenible, prevaleciendo ante los cambios y las crueldades de la humanidad.
