Discovering the Basilica of Saint Teresa and Saint Anne
Caracas is a city with deep Catholic roots, since the colonial era when faith became one of the most deeply held values within city society. Although most of the churches in the historic center date back to colonial times, in more modern times buildings dedicated to prayer and faith continued to be erected.

Conociendo la Basílica de Santa Teresa y Santa Ana
Caracas es una ciudad de profundas raíces católicas, puesto que desde la época colonial la fe se convirtió en uno de los valores más arraigados dentro de la sociedad citadina, si bien la mayoría de las iglesias del casco histórico de la ciudad datan de la época colonial, en tiempos más modernos se continuaron alzando edificaciones dedicadas a la oración y la fe.

Thus, in 1881, one of the most iconic temples in the city center, the Basilica of Teresa and Saint Anne, was completed. It is a monumental space, clearly displaying a neoclassical style, marked by the use of exterior domes and multiple internal vaults, all beautifully adorned with marble, glass, and different types of metals, but with a common feature that stands out for its excellent finishes and elegant style.
Es así como en el año 1881 se culmina uno de los templos más icónicos del centro de la ciudad, la Basílica Teresa y Santa Ana. Un espacio de características monumentales, en donde se aprecia claramente un estilo neoclásico, marcado por el uso de cúpulas exteriores y múltiples bóvedas internas, todo muy bien adornado de mármol, cristal y metales de diferentes tipos, pero con una condición común la cual se destaca por sus excelentes acabados y su estilo elegante.
On my previous trips to this city, I had always heard about this Catholic temple, as it has become an iconic space among Caracas residents, since it houses one of the most enigmatic images in Venezuelan culture: the Nazareno de San Pablo, whose history dates back to the 17th century, when it was created by a Sevillian sculptor. But the vicissitudes of fate brought it to Venezuelan soil, and it is here, after political diatribes and miracles attributed to its grace, that this image became a symbol of faith and authentic devotion.
En mis viajes anteriores a esta ciudad siempre había escuchado hablar de este templo católico, ya que dentro del gentilicio caraqueño se ha convertido en un espacio icónico, puesto que en su interior resguarda a una de las imágenes más enigmáticas de la cultura venezolana, estamos hablando del Nazareno de San Pablo, cuya historia se remonta hasta el siglo XVII, cuando vio la luz gracias a un escultor sevillano. Pero los avatares del destino lo trajo hasta tierras venezolanas y es aquí en donde, después de diatribas políticas y milagros atribuidos a su gracia, esta imagen se convirtió en un símbolo de fe y auténtica devoción.
Therefore, this is a place I could not overlook, and upon crossing its doors, I felt the satisfaction of having fulfilled a visit that had been pending for a long time. Unlike many other temples located in this city, this one is extraordinarily large, and its architecture is designed to make us feel the full weight of its grandeur on our shoulders. However, beyond being a reflection of unshakeable faith, it seems to be the legacy of a government that centuries ago wanted to leave an indelible mark on a key point in Venezuelan society.
Por lo cual, este es un sitio que no podía pasar por alto y al cruzar por sus puertas, sentí la satisfacción de haber cumplido una visita que estaba pendiente desde hace mucho tiempo. A diferencia de muchos otros templos ubicados en esta ciudad, este cuenta con unas magnitudes extraordinarias y su arquitectura está pensada para que esa grandeza se sienta con todo su peso sobre nuestros hombros, pero más allá de ser esto un reflejo de fe inquebrantable, pareciera ser el legado de un gobierno que siglos atrás quería dejar una huella imborrable en un punto neurálgico de la sociedad venezolana.
This church has spacious rooms, interesting chandeliers, and many finely crafted elements, but one of the most striking pieces is the baldachin covering the seat and the main altar. It is here that the power of the church is enhanced and where we discover that religion goes beyond an ideal; it is also authority and earthly power.
Esta iglesia cuenta con espacios amplios, interesantes candelabros y muchos elementos finamente cuidados, pero una de las piezas más llamativas es el baldaquino que cubre la sede y el altar mayor, es acá en donde se realza el poder de la iglesia y en donde descubrimos que la religión va más allá de un ideal, también es autoridad y poder terrenal.
Another curious fact is that in a small, almost unnoticeable crypt, we find the mortal remains of Saint Justin, a Roman martyr from the early centuries of Christianity who, thanks to the vicissitudes of fate, ended up resting in peace in the heart of this modern Latin American city. There are many theories about how he came to be here, but at the same time, there is some mystery. What is certain is that he was welcomed with dignity and affection into a warm and friendly society.
Otro dato curioso es que en una pequeña cripta casi pasando desapercibida, nos encontramos con los restos mortales de San Justino, un mártir romano de los primeros siglos del cristianismo que igual gracias a los avatares del destino terminó descansando en paz en el corazón de esta ciudad moderna y latinoamericana. Sobre cómo llegó a este espacio existen muchas teorías, pero al mismo tiempo algo de misterio. Lo cierto es que fue acogido con dignidad y afecto dentro de una sociedad que es calurosa y amigable.
Walking through the corridors of this temple, we can feel that spiritual connection typical of Catholic churches, but at the same time we find ourselves in a space where every element seems like a museum piece. This is where an interesting contrast arises, since while some people pray with deep devotion, others, like me, enter to discover and photograph every inch of a space that stands out for its incredible beauty.
Al caminar por los pasillos de este templo, si podemos sentir esa conexión espiritual típica de las iglesias católicas, pero al mismo tiempo nos encontramos con un espacio en donde cada elemento parece una pieza de museo, es aquí en donde surge un contraste interesante, puesto que mientras algunas personas rezan con profunda devoción, otras como yo, entramos para descubrir y fotografiar cada centímetro de un espacio que se destaca por su increíble belleza.
Despite what I thought, this basilica is not stuck in time. While the figures of some traditional saints set the tone, we also find more familiar and modern faces.
A pesar de lo que yo pensaba, esta basílica no se encuentra estancada en el tiempo. Si bien la figura de algunos santos tradicionales marcan la pauta, también nos encontramos con rostros más conocidos y modernos.
Little by little, new technological elements are being added to this religious environment, which shows us that it is a living space, vibrating to the rhythm of a society that is just as dynamic and seeks to maintain traditions, but at the same time sharing the benefits of modern times.
Poco a poco nuevos elementos tecnológicos se van agregando a este entorno religioso, lo cual nos demuestra que se trata de un espacio que está vivo, vibrando al ritmo de una sociedad que es igual de dinámica y que busca mantener las tradiciones, pero al mismo tiempo compartiendo las bondades de los tiempos modernos.
This is a visit that I thoroughly enjoyed, as it was filled with great spirituality, a lot of history, and a wealth of culture. It is in these spaces where we can fully understand the characteristics of society, where we can also find a little bit of our roots, and where we discover the greatness of a world that is complex and at the same time very interesting.
Esta es una visita que disfruté plenamente, puesto que estuvo cargada de una gran espiritualidad, mucha historia y una gran riqueza cultural. Es en estos espacios en donde podemos comprender a plenitud los rasgos de la sociedad, es aquí en donde también podemos encontrar un poco de nuestras raíces y en donde descubrimos la grandeza de un mundo que es complejo y al mismo tiempo muy interesante.
