Discovering Stadium Square

Big cities have always struck me as enigmatic places, where absolutely nothing is set in stone and where I can discover wonderful spots. Caracas is a place where I could find practically anything, but where every moment brought a different surprise. As I walked around the Central University of Venezuela, I let myself be led by the paths and thus discovered a space that radiates divergent energies.

Descubriendo La Plaza De Los Estadios

Las grandes ciudades siempre me han parecido espacios enigmáticos, en donde absolutamente nada está escrito y en donde puedo descubrir lugares maravillosos. Caracas es un espacio en donde pude encontrar prácticamente de todo, pero en donde a cada momento me llevaba una sorpresa diferente. Mientras caminaba por las inmediaciones de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, me dejé llevar por los senderos y así fui descubriendo un espacio que irradia energías divergentes.

I would later learn that this place is known as Plaza de los Estadios, but its official name is Plaza Simón Bolívar, though I believe the former name is more accurate, since there is no reference to the liberator here, there are no patriotic elements, and it is primarily an overpass designed to integrate the Olympic Stadium and the baseball stadium into a single urban layout, thereby improving pedestrian flow and adding a sense of uniformity to the entire space that suits it quite well.

Se posteriormente me enteraría que este lugar es conocido como la Plaza de los Estadios, pero oficialmente su nombre es Plaza Simón Bolívar, aunque creo que la primera aseveración es la más correcta, puesto que aquí no hay ninguna alusión al libertador, no existen elementos de carácter patriótico y se trata más que nada de un paso elevado que busca integrar dentro de un mismo urbanismo al estadio olímpico y al estadio de béisbol, generando así una mejor circulación peatonal y agregándole a todo el espacio un patrón de uniformidad que le sienta bastante bien.

It is a rather desolate space, and because it is so vast, the sheer scale of the space can overwhelm us, which is somewhat intimidating, but at the same time reflects the magnificence with which it was conceived. I suppose that when sporting events are held, these spaces are packed with people, chants, and a lot of noise, but for now, it is silent.

Se trata de un espacio bastante solitario, y al ser un lugar de grandes magnitudes, el poder del espacio es capaz de sobrepasarnos, lo cual es un tanto intimidante, pero al mismo tiempo refleja la magnificencia con la que fue ideado. Supongo que cuando se celebran actividades deportivas, estos espacios se abarrotan de personas, cánticos y mucho ruido, pero por los momentos resulta silente.

Obviously, it’s not a particularly appealing place for tourists; some might not even include it in their itinerary, but I stumbled upon it by accident and came away with a great impression of the place. Although I didn’t find any grand monuments, sweeping panoramic views, or picture-perfect spots, I had a wonderful walk where I could breathe in plenty of fresh air, enjoyed nature that blends perfectly with the architecture, and discovered one of those hidden gems that are so abundant in big cities.

Obviamente no se trata de un espacio atractivo para hacer turismo, quizás algunos incluso no lo incluyan dentro de un cronograma de paseo, pero accidentalmente yo lo descubrí y me llevo una excelente impresión de este espacio, aunque no conseguí grandes monumentos, enormes vistas panorámicas o lugares perfectos, me traje un buen recorrido, en donde pude respirar mucho aire fresco, disfruté de una naturaleza que se combina a la perfección con la arquitectura y encontré uno de esos tesoros escondidos que tanto abundan en las grandes ciudades.
