At the Humboldt Hotel

For many years, perched atop the city of Caracas, there has stood a structure that has become enigmatic, shattered conventions, and cemented itself in the collective imagination through turbulent histories, mysteries, and, at the same time, a great deal of pride. This is the iconic Hotel Humboldt, a circular building nestled at the very top of Mount Ávila. On one side, it overlooks the city of Caracas and gazes out over the vastness of the Caribbean; in the 1950s, it was conceived as a space dedicated to tourism and opulence; with its five stars and innovative offerings, it made headlines and earned a place of honor among the nation’s hotels.

Desde hace muchos años, sobre las cimas de la ciudad de Caracas existe una construcción que se ha vuelto enigmática, ha roto paradigmas y se ha afianzado dentro del imaginario colectivo con historias turbulentas, misterios, pero al mismo tiempo mucho orgullo. Se trata del icónico o del Humboldt, un edificio de características circulares enclavado en lo más alto del pico Ávila. De un lado observa a la ciudad de Caracas y vigila la inmensidad del Caribe; en los años 50 se concibió como un espacio dedicado al turismo y la opulencia; con sus cinco estrellas y sus propuestas innovadoras conquistó titulares y se ganó un puesto de honor entre los hospedajes nacionales.

But political changes, economic crises, and very unfortunate situations followed, in which all sectors of the population have paid the consequences of mistakes and hasty decisions. Thus, the hotel of dreams and magic fell into deep neglect, which ruined its facilities, dimmed its luster, and left it as a memory of a golden age. But after many years in the shadows, today it shines once more. Its lights can once again be seen from the capital’s valley; its doors open once more to perfectly designed ballrooms; bellhops are once again receiving luggage; and the common areas are once again available to a public torn between nostalgia, wonder, and elegance.

Pero vinieron cambios políticos, crisis económicas y situaciones muy desafortunadas, en donde todos los sectores de la población hemos pagado las consecuencias de errores y decisiones improvisadas. Es así como el hotel de los sueños y la magia quedó en un abandono profundo, el cual acabó con sus instalaciones, redujo su brillo y quedó como un recuerdo de una época dorada. Pero después de muchísimos años en las sombras, hoy vuelve a brillar. Sus luces pueden observarse nuevamente desde el valle capitalino, sus puertas se abren nuevamente hacia salones que fueron pensados a la perfección, los botones vuelven a recibir las maletas y las áreas comunes están nuevamente a la disposición de un público que se debate entre la nostalgia, el asombro y la elegancia.

That’s why, on this trip to Caracas, I couldn’t pass up the chance to explore the interior of this iconic landmark that everyone talks about but very few actually know. Booking a room here is a bit pricey compared to the country’s economic reality, but at the same time, if you want to spend a night here, you have to book directly through the hotel, since online booking platforms seem to overlook it. But on this occasion, I wasn’t looking to stay; I wanted to, but my goal today was to explore, walk through the gardens, marvel at its halls, and enjoy architecture that remains true to its origins.

Es así como en este viaje a Caracas no pude perderme la oportunidad de conocer el interior de ese ícono del que todos hablan, pero que realmente muy pocos conocen. Reservar una habitación acá es un tanto costoso en comparación con la realidad económica del país, pero al mismo tiempo, si se quiere pasar una noche acá, se debe contratar directamente a la empresa, ya que los motores de búsqueda de reservas parecen pasarlo desapercibido. Pero en esta oportunidad no buscaba quedarme; lo quería hacer, pero mi meta hoy era conocer, caminar por los jardines, deleitarme con sus salones y disfrutar de una arquitectura que mantiene su origen.

During the last renovation, the aim was to adapt the hotel to the realities of the modern world, yet at the same time, the decision was made to preserve the essence and originality of its architecture and design; and so we find ourselves in an atmosphere frozen in time, where it feels as though we’re immersed in the late 1950s, where wood, aluminum, and pastel colors come together to create an atmosphere of sophistication and great elegance.

En la última remodelación se buscó atar al hotel para las circunstancias de un mundo moderno, pero al mismo tiempo se decidió mantener la esencia y la originalidad de su arquitectura y diseño; es así como nos encontramos frente a un ambiente congelado en el tiempo, en donde pareciera que estuviéramos inmersos en medio de los últimos años de la década de los 50, en donde la madera, el aluminio y los colores pasteles se conjugaban para regalarnos un ambiente de altura y gran elegancia.

This was an era when aluminum lamps shone in golden hues, when geometric shapes could be found on every corner, when stone was carved into murals brimming with art, and when every detail was meticulously calculated to create a visually perfect yet deeply welcoming environment.

Esta era una época en donde las lámparas de aluminio brillaban en colores dorados, en donde las figuras geométricas estaban presentes en cada esquina, en donde la piedra permitía ser tallada para convertirse en murales repletos de arte, en donde los detalles estaban milimétricamente calculados para generar un entorno visualmente perfecto, pero al mismo tiempo muy acogedor.

This is how we find various rooms; one of the most striking is the nightclub, a space entirely lined with wood and featuring a central circular dance floor, which, thanks to motors, can rotate, thereby taking the experience on it to another level.

Es así como encontramos diversos salones, uno de los más llamativos es la discoteca, un espacio totalmente forrado en madera y con una pista de baile central de forma circular, la cual gracias a unos motores puede girar, para de esta forma hacer que la experiencia sobre ella sea de otro nivel.

As I mentioned at the beginning, this hotel isn’t located just anywhere in a densely populated city, but rather crowns one of the most iconic peaks of a mountain range characterized by heights exceeding 2,000 meters—where we’re practically above the clouds, enjoying a truly incredible climate, where the mist seems eternal, the cold is refreshing, and the sense of tranquility and well-being is truly impressive.

Como mencioné al principio este hotel no se encuentra cualquier punto geográfico de una ciudad densamente poblada, sino que corona uno de los picos más icónicos de una serranía montañosa que se caracteriza por superar los 2000 m de altura, cuál prácticamente estamos sobre las nubes, disfrutando de un clima realmente increíble, en donde la neblina parece eterna, el frío es sabroso y la sensación de tranquilidad y bienestar es realmente impresionante.

Every room in the hotel combines three essential elements: nature, architecture, and comfort. There are spaces to suit every need, allowing guests to enjoy everything from private moments to group activities—all under a single guiding principle and a meticulously crafted design.

Cada estancias del hotel conjuga tres factores fundamentales, naturaleza, arquitectura y comodidad, existen ambientes para todas las necesidades, es así como podemos disfrutar desde la individualidad hasta lo colectivo, Todo bajo una misma premisa y bajo Un diseño muy bien cuidado.

It remains a five-star hotel, but it has an extra something that sets it apart from many others. Here, we find ourselves in an iconic place, brimming with stories and surrounded by the magic of the tropical Caribbean, where the sun fades to make way for clouds and cooler temperatures.

Sigue siendo un hotel de cinco estrellas, pero cuenta con un plus que lo hace resaltar sobre muchos otros Y es que acá nos encontramos en un lugar icónico, repleto de historias y rodeado por esa magia del Caribe tropical, en donde el sol se opaca para darle paso a las nubes y el frío.

I feel very happy and at the same time very proud to have had the opportunity to experience the magic that permeates this place. Here, the problems and difficulties of the city do not exist; here, there seem to be no contradictions. Instead, we find ourselves in a paradise perfectly designed to offer the best of itself, gifting us with moments that will remain etched in our minds as beautiful memories for a lifetime.

Me siento muy contento y al mismo tiempo muy orgulloso de haber tenido la oportunidad de conocer la magia que se respira en este lugar, aquí no existen los problemas y las dificultades de la ciudad, aquí pareciera no haber contradicciones, sino que nos encontramos en un paraíso perfectamente diseñado para brindar lo mejor de sí, regalándonos elementos que quedarán guardados en nuestra mente como hermosos recuerdos para toda la vida.

You don’t need to book a room to explore the common areas of this magnificent hotel; all you need to do is have a coffee or a drink at the bar to make a tour of these facilities a reality. And I assure you that once we leave these exquisite spaces behind, only one thought remains in our minds: that upon our return, we must make a reservation to spend at least one night and enjoy an extraordinary experience, where magic and perfection come together in a hotel that has everything it takes to shine.

No es necesario reservar una habitación para conocer y pasear Por las áreas comunes de este magnífico hotel, solo basta con tomarse un café o un trago en el bar para que el recorrido por estas instalaciones se haga realidad y les aseguro que una vez que dejamos atrás estos exquisitos espacios en nuestra mente solo queda una sola idea y es que al regreso se debe hacer la reserva, para así pasar por lo menos una noche y disfrutar de una experiencia extraordinaria, en donde la magia y la perfección se conjugan en un hotel que lo tiene todo para brillar.

@worldmappin I think the point of my post was misunderstood :( I’m not trying to promote the hotel. It’s just that, as part of this trip to Caracas, I had the chance to go up the mountain and check it out. For a building that spent over 40 years abandoned, it’s impossible to visit it and only mention trivial, personal details. That’s why I tried to learn about its history, describe its rooms, and highlight its value. Booking a room here is very difficult and expensive, so I went in under the pretext of having a coffee and took the opportunity to wander through its hallways. For me, it was an incredible experience and something that makes this trip to the capital worth a thousand times over.
