At the Caracas Cable Car

When you travel to Caracas, the first thing that comes to mind is a chaotic, modern city that seems closed off from the outside world, but the truth is that it’s a Caribbean city; the sea doesn’t lap at its shores, but the people feel as though they’re from the coast. But at the same time, when we look up, we find a mountain over 2,000 meters high, offering us misty landscapes and magical trails that seem straight out of the European Alps.

En el Teleférico de Caracas

Cuando uno viaja a Caracas, lo primero que llega a nuestra mente es una urbe caótica, moderna y encerrada en sí misma, pero la verdad es que se trata de una ciudad caribeña; el mar no golpea su fachada, pero la gente se siente como de la costa. Pero al mismo tiempo, al mirar hacia arriba, nos encontramos con una montaña que supera los 2000 m de altura, regalándonos paisajes nublados y senderos mágicos que parecieran sacados de los Alpes europeos.

Honestly, I was here many years ago, but today I’m back to discover what has changed over time, to fully experience the capital’s adventure, and to uncover those secrets that remain hidden in plain sight. The tour begins under a radiant sun, on the edge of one of the city’s busiest highways; there, the cable car station waits in silence, with its typical 1950s features, yet with that modern touch that characterizes the city.

Sincero, hace muchos años estuve por acá, pero hoy regreso para descubrir qué ha cambiado con el pasar del tiempo, vivir al máximo la aventura capitalina y descubrir esos secretos que siguen ocultos a la vista de todos. El Paseo comienza bajo un sol radiante, al borde de una de las autopistas más transitadas de la ciudad; allí la estación del teleférico aguarda en silencio, con sus rasgos típicos de los años 50, pero con ese toque moderno que caracteriza la ciudad.

The cable car cabins are like little square boxes surrounded by glass, offering a 360-degree view. Little by little, we rise from the ground, leaving the city behind, while ahead of us looms a mountain that is imposing from every angle; this is Warairarepano National Park, which has become the city’s true guardian.

Las cabinas que componen el teleférico son como unas cajitas cuadradas rodeadas de vidrios, en donde podemos observar una visión de 360 grados. Poco a poco vamos separándonos del suelo y atrás va quedando la ciudad, mientras que al frente nos enfrentamos a una montaña que desde todo punto de vista es imponente; se trata del parque nacional Warairarepano, que se ha convertido en el verdadero guardián de la ciudad.

After walking for a few minutes, we find ourselves in a space dominated by clouds, where the temperature drops considerably, the trees sway to the rhythm of a steady breeze, and joy overflows with every step. It’s a somewhat narrow boulevard, but one where you’ll find practically everything, from food stalls to craft vendors; plus, on this small boulevard, you’ll cross paths with people from all over the world; most of us are travelers seeking adventures and unforgettable experiences.

Después de unos minutos de recorrido, nos adentramos en un espacio dominado por las nubes, en donde la temperatura baja considerablemente, los árboles danzan al ritmo de un viento constante y la alegría se desborda a cada paso. Se trata de un bulevar un tanto angosto, pero en donde encontraremos prácticamente de todo, desde puestos de comida hasta ventas de artesanías; además, en este pequeño bulevar, los cruzaremos con personas de todas las latitudes; la mayoría de ellos somos viajeros que buscamos aventuras y experiencias inolvidables.

I think there’s only one ice skating rink in Caracas, and it’s located at the top of the mountain; unfortunately, it was already quite late when I discovered it, so I couldn’t go skating there, but I still stayed for a few minutes to soak up the vibe, laugh a little at people’s antics, and at the same time feel proud to be in such a truly unique place.

Creo que en Caracas solo existe una pista de patinaje sobre hielo y esta se encuentra en la cima de la montaña; por desgracia, ya era bastante tarde cuando la descubrí y por ello no me pude lanzar a deslizarme sobre ella, pero aun así me quedé unos minutos para disfrutar de su vibra, reírme un poco de las ocurrencias de la gente y al mismo tiempo sentirme orgulloso por estar en un lugar verdaderamente exclusivo.

Hydrangeas are a constant throughout the entire route, but alongside them we’ll find signs carved into wood, biodegradable elements, and an environment that seeks to adapt to nature. Perhaps at first the architecture clashed with the landscape, but from my perspective, there’s now a push for a more ecological and self-sustaining touch—where you can enjoy yourself without causing harm and where everything blends together perfectly.

Las hortensias son una constante a lo largo de todo el recorrido, pero junto a ellas nos encontraremos señalizaciones plasmadas sobre madera, elementos biodegradables y un entorno que busca adaptarse al medio ambiente. Quizás en un inicio la arquitectura rompía con el paisaje, pero desde mi percepción ahora se busca un toque más ecológico y autosustentable, en donde se pueda disfrutar sin necesidad de dañar y en donde todo combine de manera perfecta.

It strikes me as a very well-maintained space, where during the day everything looks incredibly orderly, clean, and safe, and when night falls, the lighting is excellent, since every corner is bathed in that light so essential for another visit—a perfect experience.

Me parece que se trata de un espacio muy bien cuidado, en donde de día todo se ve superordenado, limpio y seguro, y al caer la noche la iluminación es excelente, puesto que cada rincón se mantiene con esa luz tan necesaria para otra visita, un recorrido perfecto.

This place is truly surreal, since no one would believe it’s right on the Caribbean, but that’s nature for you; it surprises us with its whims, and we, with our ingenuity, create a unique symbiosis. This is how one can understand the magic underlying this journey, where we can fully enjoy everything around us, yet at the same time have the opportunity to reconnect with our origins, feel nature more intimately, to recharge our energies and clear our minds, which are often filled with conflicts and contradictions.

Este espacio es verdaderamente surrealista, puesto que nadie creería que se encuentra a merced del Caribe, pero así es la naturaleza; ella nos sorprende con sus locuras y nosotros con nuestra inventiva generamos una simbiosis única. Es de esta manera como se puede entender la magia que subyace en este recorrido, en donde podemos disfrutar a plenitud de todo en torno, pero al mismo tiempo tendremos la oportunidad de reconectar con nuestros orígenes, sentir a la naturaleza más de cerca, para recargar nuestras energías y despejar nuestra mente que suele estar llena de conflictos y contradicciones.

The idea of hiking this trail turned out to be a brilliant one; here, without a doubt, life is much happier, trips become unforgettable, and the experiences are truly beautiful. I hope that if you ever come to Venezuela, you’ll also have the chance to explore this trail on the city’s outskirts, as it’s one of the most important and beautiful places the Venezuelan capital has to offer.

Creció superacertada la idea de recorrer este sendero; aquí, sin duda alguna, la vida es mucho más feliz, los viajes se vuelven inolvidables y las experiencias son realmente bellas. Espero que si algún día vienes a Venezuela, también tengas la oportunidad de conocer este sendero sobre el borde de la ciudad, ya que se trata de uno de los lugares más importantes y lindos que nos regala la capital venezolana.

Visité Caracas una sola vez en mi vida y fue hace muchos años, estaba pequeña y no recuerdo mucho pero siempre he querido ir de nuevo y conocer mejor la ciudad, incluyendo subirme al teleférico, debe ser una experiencia increíble.
