A Wednesday for Walking

Today I invite you to join me on an unusual stroll, since this is a walk where you won’t find fairy-tale-like scenes, exceptional urban landscapes, or overly elaborate stories. Today I want you to join me on a Wednesday filled with everyday life; today we’re going to walk through the streets of the Los Olivos neighborhood, a growing community right in the heart of the city of La Fría, in northern Táchira state.

Un Miércoles para Caminar

Hoy los invito a dar conmigo un paseo poco común, puesto que se trata de una caminata en la cual no encontrarán imágenes sacadas como en cuento de hadas, paisajes urbanos excepcionales ni historias muy rebuscadas. Hoy quiero que me acompañen en un miércoles repleto de cotidianidad; hoy vamos a caminar por las calles del sector Los Olivos, una comunidad en crecimiento en pleno corazón de la ciudad de La Fría, al norte del estado Táchira.

We’re in an Andean region, but one with very unique characteristics: the Andes lie behind us, and this city is situated at the foothills of that majestic mountain range, on endless plains whose elevation doesn’t exceed 150 meters above sea level. Here, the temperature isn’t cold, nor are we in the shadow of snow-capped peaks; on the contrary, as part of the Lake Maracaibo basin, we have to endure temperatures of 40 to 42 degrees Celsius during the hours of peak solar radiation.

Nos encontramos en una zona andina, pero cuyas características son muy peculiares, ya que los Andes se encuentran a nuestras espaldas y esta ciudad está emplazada en el pie de monte de esa cordillera majestuosa, sobre llanuras interminables cuya altitud no supera los 150 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Acá la temperatura no es fría ni nos encontramos a la sombra de picos nevados; al contrario, al formar parte de la depresión del lago de Maracaibo, tenemos que soportar de 40 a 42 grados centígrados en los momentos de mayor radiación solar.

Given these conditions, we’ve learned to live, to go about our daily lives, and to effectively carry out all our daily activities, ranging from work to recreation. That’s why today you’re with me, walking along these dirt roads, where I take my little Camila for walks—a rat terrier who, for the past three years, has made my life happier and my walks more interesting.

Bajo esta realidad hemos aprendido a vivir, a desarrollar nuestra cotidianidad y a cumplir con eficacia todas las actividades diarias, las cuales van desde lo laboral hasta lo recreativo. Es por ello que hoy ustedes están conmigo caminando por estas calles de tierra, por las cuales paseo a mi pequeña Camila, una rat terrier que desde hace 3 años hace más feliz mi vida y más interesantes mis caminatas.

Since this area isn’t fully developed, there are still many vacant lots, which are often overgrown with weeds, creating an environment where visibility is reduced and the natural greenery shines through. Here, the sky is like a vast canvas where the sun’s colors treat us to fascinating sunsets—perhaps not with the same hues as cities like Caracas or Barquisimeto, but certainly full of energy and radiance.

Al ser una zona que no se encuentra totalmente poblada, existen todavía muchos lotes vacíos, los cuales en muchas ocasiones están dominados por la maleza, generando un entorno en donde la visibilidad se reduce y el verdor natural resplandece. Acá el cielo es como un gran lienzo en donde los colores del sol nos regalan atardeceres interesantes, quizás no con los matices de ciudades como Caracas o Barquisimeto, pero sí con mucha energía y luminosidad.

It’s precisely when the sun is just a few centimeters above the horizon that I take the opportunity to go for a walk and enjoy a peaceful afternoon, a more pleasant climate, and light that doesn’t burn. Every time I walk here, I enjoy the sky, the trees with their diverse shapes, the animals that cross our path, and the wind that’s sometimes so subtle it’s almost imperceptible.

Es precisamente cuando el sol ya se encuentra a pocos centímetros del horizonte que aprovecho para salir a caminar y así poder disfrutar de una tarde tranquila, un clima más agradable y una luz que no quema. Cada vez que camino por acá disfruto del cielo, los árboles con sus formas diversas, los animales que se cruzan en nuestro camino y del viento que a veces es tan sutil que se confunde con el inexistente.

This is a simple walk, but it’s part of my reality and helps me break away from the daily grind; it’s during these moments that I enjoy life—moments that are sometimes overlooked but hold a tremendous amount of energy.

Este es un paseo sencillo, pero que forma parte de mi realidad y el cual me ayuda a romper con la cotidianidad del día a día; es en estos minutos en donde disfruto de la vida, los cuales a veces son pasados por alto, pero que esconden una carga energética muy grande.
