My version of traditional Latvian Folk Ballad about people lost at sea: "Jūrā gāju naudas gūti" Music Video and story behind the song

(Edited)

A tragic yet beautiful Latvian Traditional song

This is my own version of Latvian Traditional Folk Song Jūrā gāju naudas gūti (I went to the sea to earn money) . A song about people who embarked seeking fortune and found tragedy with their vessel wrecking in a sea storm. It is a sad yet poignant little story, so feel free to enable de subtitle captions in the video. They are available in English, Spanish and original Latvian. Lyrics are also included later in the body of this blog post

Jūrā gāju naudas gūti (I went to the sea seeking fortune) is a haunting ballad about a sea wrecking in the storm. I went to the sea seeking fortune but "white is the money of the sea" like the frothy foam of the waves.
At the end of the song the coins now lay on a golden garden fathoms below under the sea.

I wanted the video to have a dark, romantic and almost haunting ominous atmosphere. Dark yet very melancholic dark summer vibe and a wistful "impending demise" as the song sings. Hopefully fitting for the end of the season as Summer comes to an end.
The song lyrics explain the story of the wreck and mention the wind several times, as it breaks apart the flag of the ship "making the soul disappear".
Hope it conveys the feeling

The song also mentions the wind several times and in the last verse more specifically Vēja Māte, the Latvian Baltic Mother Goddess of Wind, who is responsible both for blowing your sails favorably or for causing gales and storms. Sailors would pray to her to have clear skies and gentle winds. But tragically this is not how the story goes in this beautiful yet tragic epic song. In Baltic Latvian folklore there are many Mothers of Nature, each one representing an aspect of it (wind, darkness, fog, earth and so on)

Many thanks to my friend @lindahas from Latvia for helping me to pronounce better as I am not Latvian native speaker. This is is the second song I sing in Latvian.

Filming Location and credits

Video is filmed in Zumaia Flysch (Basque Country Coast, North of Spain).
If the landscape strikes as familiar it is maybe this is one of the filming locations of Games of Thrones, Dragonstone
It features the amazing geological formations in the Guipuzcoan Coast that lead down into the sea, formed through the erosive action of water and movements of land over the course of 50 million years, in fact they include fossil evidence of the massive extinction of the dinosaurs due to a meteorite. These whimsical have always been of interest to geologists on account of their fossil remains. The cliffs are impressive and the Flysch is only exposed at low tide so you must plan your visit accordingly not to be trapped by the tides.
But using our imagination we need to transport ourselves to the Baltic sea where this song originates from.

Lyrics

Latvian Original

Jūrā gāju naudas gūti
Saujā nesu dvēselīti.
Balta bija jūras nauda
Dārga mana dvēselīte
Vējā spīda dvēselīte
Karodziņa galiņā,
Kad nolūza karodziņis
Tad pazuda dvēselīte
Jūra krāca, jūra sņāca,
Kas guļ jūras dibenā?
Tur guļ zelti, sidrabiņi,
Dažs māmiņas auklējums
Dar Dieviņi zelta sētu
Līdz garai jūras malai,
Lai nevara Vēja Māte
Visu zemi zēģelēt

English translation

I went to the sea to earn money
I carried a soul in the palm of my hand hand.
White was the sea money
My dear my soul.
The soul shone in the wind
At the tip of the flag,
When the flag was broken,
Then the soul disappeared
The sea was crashing, the sea was snarling,
Who lies on the bottom of the sea?
There lie gold, silver coins
Some mother's babysitting
Make Gods a golden garden
along the edge of the sea
May not the Wind mother
lay waste of the whole land

FIND 3 FUFUNCHIS 🐀🐀🐀

As in all my videos there are 3 hidden rats in the video. They are like Easter Eggs to be found. This happens in every video I've published since 2014 so you may be familiar with this little game :). Fufunchis were my pet rats and out of love they have this memento appearing composited in all of my fantasy videos :) So If you spot them, let me know in the comments but don't post the time frame for others to find. Did you find any?

Instruments played

juragajubypriscillahernandez (9).gif

I play all the acoustic instruments you hear in the song. Besides voice and backing vocals I have played piano, harp, tin whistle, low whistle, and kokle.
I first listened to this song from a Latvian Kokle Ensemble. The kokle is a box zyther instrument typical of Latvia and I happen to play a little. The sound is feature in the song.
How does it look like? This is mine

Which are your favourite songs inspired by the sea?

If you know of any good songs about the ocean, sea shanties, seafaring or pirate songs, epic ballads like this one let me know in the comments. I want to make a playlist of songs inspired by the ocean.
Some of my favourites are:
-Song to the Siren (This Mortal Coil version)
-Shiver my Timbers (Muppet's Treasure Island)
-Valparaiso (Sting)
And if you liked this video and you enjoyed my new music video, please give a try to my older "mermaid" song "Surrender"

Surrender - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com) (2) -640- by Priscilla Hernandez.jpg

This other one was shared two years ago filmed in a close by location, though with a totally different vibe and an original song.

Firstly, WOW you are incredibly talented! The video perfectly accompanies the haunting beauty of your voice... thank you for sharing the backstory of the song as well! I like the idea that there are multiple mother natures, truly it would explain so much! It makes me think of how as mothers, sometimes the best course of action is to teach your kids a lesson- all that can take at times is leaving them to their own devices! Ah the fates of a sea adventurer :)

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, there are like 60 mātes, snd they are often mentioned in the old songs. I an Spanish but I love mythology and folklore
I also make my own original music but I have s weak spot for traditionals and record some them some in between my own releases
Yes, my father (rip) was captain of a fishing boat so I know all too well what is a storm in the unruly sea

The palette on instruments is more acoustic instruments and nature sounds. I really like to reimagine old songs with folklore. And thank you. An original about to be released too

Though nothing can compared to writing my own songs I really love to explore the folklore and mythology and legends from other countries through song. It is also a way to explore the phonetics of a foreign language which I always find challenging. Thank you so much for the beautiful compliment. Are you attending hivefest, I wish I could.

I think it's an amazing thing to take something old and give it a new life or a new twist. Not replacing it of course - but building on it and evolving it. I have not done much of this but a very long time ago I played the church organ and in recent years sometimes I make piano improvisations based on the chords from chants written for psalms.

Yes I'm going to Hive Fest - I wish you could be there too but understand it's impractical/expensive for a lot of people, especially this year,

Wonderful performance! I admit, I'm having difficulty finding your 3 little friends. But I'll keep searching until I find at least one!

My native language is a Spanish but I must listen in English which is the language I write my songs usually. But I also like to cover traditionals and I have down from Latvia, Iceland, Finland, Japan... And it is super fun to explore the folklore and the sonority of other tongues
