Gardening for Bee Lovers

If you are a bee lover like me, watch out what you going to plant in your garden - or on your balkony. A pretty good idea are thistles, like you see at the picture. They come in an incredible variety of colors, sizes and shapes. But all are perfect feeding grounds for either bees and/or butterflies or other insects. And: they also look beautiful; some even smell really good. Contrary to their bad reputation... For years I've been sowing thistle seeds in various places in our garden during the late winter months. When the bees hatch, that live in our bee hotels, it is a wonderful spectacle to see them humming over the thistles. And in midsummer the butterflies come along... good for the little animals, the environment, biodiversity and for your own well-being. Nothing is as relaxing as watching little creatures flutter.

Bees are admirable insects, many only see them as a bug that seeks the sweet and stings you if you are in their way, forgetting that they are essential for life on the planet, I did not know the love of bees for these plants that you mentioned, I would love to have one to see them arrive, but I have neighbors estupidisimos that would attempt against the poor bees.

Yes, astonishingly, many people know far too little about bees, wasps, butterflies and other insects. As you say, they only find the little ones annoying - unfortunately. I'm sorry you have such neighbors. It only helps to educate people, to tell them how amazing and useful bees are. Without bees (and other pollinators) there would be no food for us humans. Without bees we will die out! Until a few years ago I didn't know about the thistles either - a gardener told me the trick. Since then, hundreds of wild bees have lived in our garden.

I am convinced that these are impossible to educate, but I will do my part for nature.

If everyone does what they can, we'll make good progress. Therefore: whatever you can do is perfect! 😀
