| Last Friday, my traditional mushroom column took a pause, and do you know why? Because I ran out of mushroom photos! All my summer and autumn stock was used up, and I haven't been to the forest this winter yet. Although you can still find something interesting in winter, like velvet shank mushrooms. But this time, my camera caught something different – lichens. On my apple and cherry plum trees, I noticed bright yellow spots that immediately caught my attention. In winter, when everything around is gray and dull, such colorful specks look especially striking. I decided to identify my find using Google Photos, and the result came quickly: it's Xanthoria parietina, also known as golden shield lichen. This lichen has a bright orange-yellow color and grows on tree bark, stones, walls – practically anywhere. It is known for its resistance to air pollution and even heavy metals. Turns out, it’s not just beautiful but also very resilient. Interestingly, lichens are not just simple organisms but a symbiosis of fungi and algae. They coexist in mutual benefit: the algae perform photosynthesis and provide nutrients, while the fungus offers protection and moisture. A true natural partnership! We often don’t notice such little details because, in summer, they are overshadowed by lush greenery, but now, among bare branches, they reveal their full beauty. So if you go for a walk – take a closer look! Maybe you'll find these tiny yet fascinating organisms in your garden or a park. Have you noticed lichens in winter? Усі літні та осінні запаси вичерпано, а зимою я до лісу ще не вибирався. Хоча й узимку можна знайти щось цікаве, наприклад, фламуліну оксамитову. Але цього разу мій об’єктив зловив дещо інше – лишайники. На моїх яблунях і аличі я помітив яскраво-жовті плями, які одразу привернули увагу. Взимку, коли все довкола сіре і тьмяне, такі барвисті вкраплення виглядають особливо ефектно. Я вирішив ідентифікувати знахідку за допомогою Google Фото, і результат не забарився: це ксанторія настінна, або ж настінна золотянка. Цей лишайник має яскраво-оранжево-жовтий колір і зростає на корі дерев, каменях, стінах – практично будь-де. Він відомий своєю стійкістю до забруднення повітря та навіть важких металів. Виявляється, він не лише гарний, а й дуже витривалий. Цікаво, що лишайники – це не просто організми, а симбіоз грибів та водоростей. Вони співіснують у взаємній вигоді: водорість здійснює фотосинтез і забезпечує поживні речовини, а гриб дає захист і вологу. Справжнє природне партнерство! Мабуть, ми часто не помічаємо таких дрібниць, бо влітку їх затінює буйство зелені, а от зараз, серед голих гілок, вони розкривають усю свою красу. Тож якщо підете на прогулянку – придивіться! Можливо, і ви знайдете ці маленькі, але дуже цікаві створіння у себе у саду чи парку. А ви помічали лишайники взимку? Чи, може, все ще знаходите гриби? 🍄😊 |

It's not exactly a mushroom. A lichen (as I mentioned in the post) is an amazing symbiosis of cyanobacteria and fungi within a single structure.
I love lichens, many studies say that they are excellent bioindicators of air quality and that depending on the species they have different tolerances to pollutants, as you indicated. You are in a clean environment =)
