#Monomad Challenge - The gentle guard - O guarda gentil [En-Pt]
Good morning, #Monomad friends
The days seemed the same to him... his gaze serene but attentive... Always scanning the horizon, the hills and valleys that stretched out around him. From the top of his makeshift throne, taken perhaps by virtue of his slightly higher position than the surrounding metres, the 4-footed guardian holds his pose.
Not needing to be restrained or bound by a long leash, his almost majestic posture demonstrates the enormous nobility of his character.
How can we categorise these beings as irrational? What distinguishes their actions from those of a two-legged guard with opposable thumbs, who sometimes barely has the energy to stand outside in the rain to fulfill his important task?
The first moment I saw him, in the village of Piódão, I realised that he was much more than a medium-sized white dog with short hair... everything about him showed a reality beyond what I had initially been given to understand.
I realised within the first twenty seconds of meeting him that he had noticed me long before I had sighted him. Without showing any particular affection or seeking my attention, he continued to scan the hills without being distracted by my presence or even signalling that I was a threat (which in fact I wasn't).
His ability was impressive, and I'm sure it's not simply innate, because often when I walk a little closer to a railing or the gate of a private property, the canine immediately signals my presence in a very effusive way.
Could it be that the freedom given to this gentle guardian has endowed him with the ability to deal only with what is in fact his nature - protecting his owner's possessions? Leaving behind fears or exaggerations that would lead to nothing in terms of energy expenditure or focus?
A guard dog isn't just those that are more bulky, bigger or more aggressive towards anything and everything. This little guy, with his huge, gentle heart, teaches us all to be kinder to our surroundings, keeping our focus on what's really important.

Os dias pareciam iguais para ele... seu olhar sereno, mas atento... Sempre vasculhando o horizonte, os montes e vales que se estendiam em seu redor. Do alto do seu trono improvisado, tomado talvez por força da sua posição levemente mais elevada do que o rodeia nos metros circundantes, o guardião de quatro patas, mantém a sua pose.
Não necessitando de estar preso ou amarado por uma longa trela, sua quase majestosa postura, demonstra uma enorme nobreza do seu ser.
Como é que é possível que classifiquemos estes seres como irracionais. O que distinguirá a sua acção de um guarda bípede de polegares oponíveis, que por vezes não tem quase energia para estar ao relento e à chuva para cumprir com a sua tão importante tarefa?
No primeiro instante que o vislumbrei, na aldeia de Piódão, percebi que era muito mais que um cão branco médio de pêlo curto... tudo nele transparecia um realidade para além do que inicialmente me foi dada a entender.
Entendi, nos primeiros 20 segundos, em que me cruzei com ele, que ele me tinha percebido, muito antes de eu o ter avistado. Não tendo demostrado um especial afeto, ou procurado a minha atenção, continuou a perscrutar os montes, sem se distrair com a minha presença, ou sequer sinalizar-me como um perigo (que de facto eu não o era).
Impressionante a sua capacidade, que eu tenho a certeza que não é apenas inata, pois frequentemente quando nas minhas caminhadas passo um pouco mais perto de um gradeamento ou portada de uma propriedade privada, o canídeo, sinaliza logo a minha presença de forma bastante efusiva.
Será que a liberdade dada a este gentil guardião o dotou com a capacidade de conseguir lidar apenas com o que de facto é a sua natureza - proteger as posses do seu dono? Deixando para trás receios, ou exageros que a nada lhe levariam esse gasto energético, ou de foco?
Um cão de guarda não é apenas e somente os que se apresentam como mais corpulentos, de maior porte, ou com maior agressividade a tudo e a todos. Este pequeno, de coração enorme e gentil, ensina-nos a todos a ser mais gentis com o que nos rodeia, mantendo o nosso foco no que é realmente importante.

Photographing dogs is quiet challenging, and I recognize it... I think I was lucky with this one, since I was using my smartphone to photograph him, and I didn't bother at all with my presence!
