+HSBI CCC's Street Art Contest #255 - "Coruja de Pernas Altas" - Bordalo II - Coimbra, Portugal [Eng-Pt]

Welcome to another post in the Street Art community!
Today I want to share another fantastic piece of work by an artist who is already well known not only in Portugal, but internationally. I'm talking about Bordalo II.
The piece was created in January 2022 and is located on the north façade of the College of Arts at the University of Coimbra in Portugal.
This work is part of a series of works developed by the artist, called “Big Trash Animals - Neutral”, and about which I've already had the pleasure of sharing three other works in this series, if you're interested:
The location of this piece is in fact as symbolic as it could be. And why is that, you ask? Well, the University, as its name suggests, is located in the beautiful and historic city of Coimbra, on the banks of the Mondego River. This University is one of the oldest in the world that is still in operation. This alone makes it a very special place with a lot of history to tell. The very history of its inauguration is in a way almost parallel to the very foundation of the Portuguese nation, you see. It was created on March 1, 1290 by order of King Dinis I, who signed the document, and was established in the city of Coimbra seven years later, in 1537.
The Faculty of Architecture is one of the eight faculties that make it up, and in which it is located.
The owl, as we all know or associate with it, is often associated with learning, culture and education, which are fundamental for a prosperous and sustainable society. Only education and knowledge allow societies to evolve and develop in order to give back to their members in the best possible way.
In this piece, the artist took the idea of using the owl, the symbol of knowledge, and also the insignia of the higher education institution itself, but gave it various characteristics that made it different from all the other owls.
This one, on purpose, has larger legs. And this is to convey the importance that wisdom has for the world and for the artist. Its height has to do not only with its elevation, but also with the goal of always reaching beyond, above, higher!
A second characteristic of the piece is, of course, its obvious division. One half is more in the classical style, with more sober and natural colors, which blends in better with the old walls and the classical way of teaching and transmitting knowledge, and the other side, almost antagonistic, but which completes the piece, illustrates a more futuristic will and attitude, more colorful, and with new ideas, to be able to launch new challenges and new goals for the future.
This duality gives the piece a very special touch that leaves no passer-by indifferent.
Bordalo II always tries to use material that is no more than garbage, and uses it creatively, cutting and overlapping various pieces, painting them, giving them shapes and overlaps that from a few meters away end up generating a very strong and very interesting image!

Hoje quero aqui partilhar mais um trabalho fantástico de um artista que é já bastante conhecido não só por Portugal, mas já a nível internacional. Falo-vos de Bordalo II.
A peça foi criada em Janeiro de 2022 e está localizada na fachada Norte do Colégio de Artes da Universidade de Coimbra, em Portugal.
Este trabalho está incluído numa série de trabalhos desenvolvidos pelo artista, designada de "Big Trash Animals - Neutral", e sobre a qual já aqui tive o prazer de partilhar outras três obras integradas nesta série, a interessar:
A localização desta peça é de facto o mais simbólico que poderia ser. E porquê, perguntam vocês. Pois bem, a Universidade, tal como o próprio nome indica, está localizada na lindíssima e histórica cidade de Coimbra, à beira do Rio Mondego implementada. Esta Universidade é uma das mais antigas do Mundo que ainda se encontra em operação. O que já por si só torna-a num sítio muito especial e com bastante história para contar. A própria história da sua inauguração é de certa forma quase paralela à própria fundação da Nação Portuguesa, vejam bem. Tendo sido criada a 1 de Março de 1290 por ordem do Rei Dom Dinis I, que assinou o documento, tendo sido fixada na cidade de Coimbra, sete anos depois, em 1537.
A Faculdade de Arquitectura é uma das oito faculdades que a compõem, e na qual está localizada.
A coruja, como todos nós o sabemos, ou o associamos, está frequentemente associada ao ensino, à cultura e à educação, que são fundamentais para uma sociedade prospera e sustentável. Só uma educação e o conhecimento permitem às sociedades evoluírem, e desenvolverem-se, para retribuir aos seus elementos o melhor possível.
Nesta peça, o artista pegou na ideia de usar a coruja, o tal símbolo de conhecimento, e também a insígnia da própria instituição de ensino superior, mas deu-lhe várias características que a fizeram diferente de todas as outras corujas.
Esta, propositadamente, tem as pernas mais dimensionadas. E isto para transmitir a importância que a sabedoria tem para o Mundo e para o artista. A sua altura, tem não só a ver com a sua elevação, mas também com o objectivo de alcançar sempre algo mais além, mais acima, mais alto!
Uma segunda característica da peça é naturalmente a sua divisão óbvia. Sendo constituída por uma metade mais ao estilo clássico, com cores mais sóbrias e mais naturais, que se mistura melhor nas paredes antigas e na maneira clássica de ensinar e de transmitir o conhecimento, e um outro lado, quase que antagônico, mas da que completa a peça, que ilustra uma vontade e uma postura mais futurista, mais colorida, e com ideias novas, para poder lançar novos desafios e novas metas para o futuro.
Essa dualidade da peça conferem-lhe um toque muito especial, que não deixa quem por ali passa indiferente.
Bordalo II procura sempre usar material que não passa de lixo, e usa-o de forma criativa, cortando e sobrepondo várias peças, pintado-as conferindo-lhes formas e sobreposições que a poucos metros de distância acabam por gerar uma imagem muito forte e muito interessante!

Yes, his work is like a signature by it self. The usage of the garbage has the main material for his art, and the colorful composition and size of them speak to anyone that crosses with them!
