Caminhada do Rio Safarujo - Ericeira, Portugal [Eng-Pt]

On the 14th of this month, I took part in a walk organized by the Hidroesfera group. Although I am a member of this group, whose main focus is the conservation of water resources and reporting ecological problems to the authorities, I am not able to participate in its outdoor activities as often as I would like.
Fortunately, on the 14th, I had no impediments, so I joined the initiative launched by Hidrosfera to hike approximately 8 kilometres along a watercourse located near Ericeira, the Safarujo River.
The meeting point for the start of the route was at 10 a.m. in the São Lourenço Beach car park. São Lourenço beach is the mouth of the Sarafujo River, and we walked upstream to Galiza de Baixo, a nearby town. We continued from São Lourenço, passing through Quintas, then Galiza de Baixo and Valongo, returning to São Lourenço. The paths we chose were the ‘Caminho das Raposeiras’, then Rua da Baixa, Rua Fonte de Valongo, Rua dos Maias and again the Caminho das Raposeiras.
As I live a little way from Ericeira, and as it is a route I like to take without using the motorway, I left home relatively early. It was a very sunny day, despite the heavy rain that had fallen in previous days.
We started the walk feeling very energetic and highly motivated. We talked about various projects we could develop next year, as well as awareness-raising activities for nature protection and watercourse conservation.
One of the advantages of this association is that it brings together people from various professional backgrounds, from marine biologists, engineers, veterinarians, firefighters, and civil protection agents, to even a mathematician! But what matters is that each person contributes so that something new can emerge and be developed.
This region, near Mafra, and more specifically the Ericeira area, has been under great urban pressure for the construction of buildings close to environmentally sensitive areas that are very important for the local flora and fauna. Not to mention their extreme importance for the local social fabric.
We had the opportunity to see several agricultural areas, which have been used for many generations to grow various varieties of vegetables. At this time of year, few crops are bearing fruit. The vines had just been pruned after the previous harvest. Even so, the surrounding green countryside made this short walk of just over two hours very pleasant.
Along the way, we came across a small pine forest, where we had the opportunity to see some mushrooms timidly sprouting from the fertile soil. Notice their size... They are not very big. What gave them away was only their light colours, which stood out among the brown pine needles.
We ended the walk with lunch in one of the nearby towns, Ribamar. But as I already had lunch arranged at my mother's house, I left.
The next activity for this group is scheduled for the first day of the year! I am very excited to participate, as I will be spending New Year's Eve either at home or at the house of some friends who live nearby. So I will almost certainly have the opportunity to participate in the next one!

No dia 14 deste mês participei numa caminhada organizada pelo grupo Hidroesfera. Apesar de eu ser sócio deste grupo que tem como cariz principal a conservação dos recursos hídricos, e a sinalização de problemas ecológicos que encontre às autoridades, não consigo tão frequentemente como gostaria de participar nas suas actividades ao ar livre.
Mas felizmente, no passado dia 14 não tinha qualquer impedimento, por isso juntei-me à iniciativa lançada pela Hidrosfera para fazer uma caminhada de aproximadamente 8 quilômetros ao longo de um curso de água localizado perto da Ericeira, o Rio Safarujo.
O ponto de encontro para o início do percurso foi às 10h no Parque de estacionamento da Praia de São Lourenço. A praia de São Lourenço é a foz do Rio Sarafujo, e fizemos o percurso ascendente do rio, até à Galiza de Baixo, uma localidade ali perto. Seguimos de São Lourenço, passando por Quintas, depois Galiza de Baixo e Valongo, retormando a São Lourenço. Os caminhos que escolheram foi o "Caminho das Raposeiras", depois Rua da Baixa, Rua Fonte de Valongo, Rua dos Maias e novamente pelo Caminho das Raposeiras.
Como eu moro um pouco distante da Ericeira, e como é um percurso que eu gosto de fazer não por auto-estrada, sai de casa relativamente cedo. O dia estava bastante solarego, apesar das fortes chuvadas que tinham caído nos anteriores dias.
Começamos a caminhada, com bastante energia, e muito motivados. Falamos de vários projectos que poderíamos desenvolver no próximo ano, bem como acções de divulgação para a protecção da natureza e conservação dos cursos de água.
Uma das vantagens que existe nesta associação é mesmo essa, conta com a presença de pessoas de vários quadrantes profissionais, desde biólogos marinhos, engenheiros, veterinários, bombeiros, e agentes de protecção civil, e até um matemático! Mas o que importa é que cada um dá o seu contributo para que algo de novo apareça e seja desenvolvido.
Esta região, perto de Mafra, e mais concretamente da zona da Ericeira, tem sofrido grande pressão urbanística para a construção de prédios junto de áreas ambientais sensíveis e muito importantes para a flora e fauna local. Já nem falando na sua extrema importância para o tecido social local.
Tivemos oportunidade de ver várias zonas agrícolas, que já há muitas gerações são usadas para o cultivo de várias variedades de legumes. Nesta altura, poucas são as culturas que estejam a frutificar. As videiras tinham acabado de ser podadas, depois da campanha de vindima precedente. Mas mesmo assim, o natureza circundante, e verdejante, tornaram este pequeno passeio de pouco mais de 2 horas muito agradável.
No lato do percurso anda cruzamos com um pequeno pinhal, onde tivemos oportunidade de ver alguns cogumelos que timidamente brotavam do solo fértil. Reparem nas dimensões deles... Não são muito grandes. O que os denunciava era apenas as suas cores claras que se destacavam por entre as agulhas castanhas dos pinhos.
Acabamos o percurso com um almoço numa das localidades perto, em Ribamar. Mas eu como já tinha o meu almoço combinado na casa da minha mãe, vim embora.
A próxima acção deste grupo deverá decorrer no primeiro dia do ano! Estou muito espectante para participar, visto que eu vou fazer a passagem de ano ou em casa, ou na casa de uns amigos que moram perto. Por isso, terei a oportunidade de participar na próxima, quase certamente!

Thank you for your comment. In my humble opinion, I don't think that information is not "out" there... the main issue, is the aware of the general public. If people try to understand a little bit more about the interconnectivity that all being have between them, I think that the major part of their personal decisions and actions would change.

Yes, it is indeed one of my favorite free time program. To walk in nature, and just letting me being surrounded by Nature... The sounds, the scents, and the views... I can't find a better way to connect with the world and with others!
