Monomad Challenge | Beneath the bridge / debajo del puente | ESP / ENG

The city of Valencia, on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, was always divided by the River Turia until an enormous flood at the end of the 1950s left the city devastated, with a high cost in material and human lives. The authorities then decided to divert the river and take it to the outskirts of the city. Once the river was diverted, the river dried up and was gradually used as a public space, creating gardens and buildings that house museums and other recreational uses. To cross the river, in the part closest to the old river mouth, a bridge was designed to link the new part of the city with the exit to the south. The bridge over the old riverbed was the work of the Valencian engineer Santiago Calatrava and is 180 metres long. It was named L'Assut de L'or, the Azud del Oro, an old building whose function was to distribute the water from the river to the adjacent orchards.

The images I submit to today's Monomad correspond to the lower part of the structure, which from this low viewpoint seems gigantic, even though it is "only" 34 metres wide. There are two shots, one vertical and one horizontal, from each end of the space.

ESP

Finally, to illustrate the article, I will show a view of the top of the bridge so that we can get an idea of the scale of the work.
