Street Photography in Varanasi šŸ‡®šŸ‡³ People and Urban Animals

Canceled the flight to Tbilisi, Georgia, going to Pokhara, Nepal, don't ask me why - too psychological, too complicated. šŸ˜– In the meantime, it's quite hot in Uttar Pradesh, so I switched to wearing shorts a couple of week ago, and I really enjoy wearing featherlight clothes all day.

Weather forecast for Varanasi according to Google Weather

Feel like a helium balloon without 3-kg jeans on me; back to real tropics, love it.

Sharing 24mm shots from walks on March 13 and 14.

Jangamwadi Road, outside of the old town - for a change. A busy street full of rickshaws waiting and working, full of locals and Indian visitors who came to see the Varanasi ghats.

So much is passing by you - colorful garments, faces, emotions.

And everyone is too busy to pay attention to a guy photographing strangers.

Back to the lanes, the girl asked me to photograph her, I did it quickly, and she was busy too and left immediately, softly smiling.

Religious art; India is #1 in the world from this point of view, imo.

Varanasi without monkeys isn't Varanasi... Did I tell you I have a personal ones? Yeah, they visit my room's barred window. and we observe at each other from a 50cm distance almost daily. Fun!

A short visit to the ghats:

Boys are participating in a sort of ceremony.

Indian kids love smiling, but not these guys, lol. Though it could be my fault - I turned back suddenly and photographed them - they probably got scared, little creatures.

Siesta.

Those colorful Indian temples and holy cows.

Another trash eating cow.

Doggy. They prefer sleeping on elevated surfaces. Dogs sleeping on motorbikes is the norm here.

Probably, too many died below hoofs and tires - evolution.

Guys. šŸ™‚

And this is my stray friend Sonya, whom I've been feeding for a month every day:

DSC_5090.JPG

She is quite feral, doesn't allow to stroke her, and even don't make me know she recognizes me. However, one day, I was late with the treats, and - as a guy from the staff told me - she sneaked into the guesthouse and came to my room's door and was waiting for me. šŸ˜„

Hope you liked the set, dear reader! Stay tuned - more posts from South Asia is coming! šŸ˜Ž

The photos were taken with a Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D (except for Sonya's image) on a full-frame DSLR Nikon D750 on January 13 and 14, 2026 (except for Sonya's image), in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.

I hope so. I am going to Pokhara City - never been there before. I found out that they have street cats with unusual eyes there... nature trails for walks... And chicken momo (I gave up on food in Varanasi - became a vegetarian and, half the time, even a vegan).

Thank you!

Pokhara is going to be great for this time of the year. Some good trek to snow capped mountains, good cultural spot, and refreshing lakes and street.
Ghandruk or Poonhill could be ideal for short trail. Pokhara is epicenter for adventure like bungee, uv flights, paragliding as well. Whatever you prefer, either stroll around lakes or down the street. Its a beautiful refreshing place.

bungee, uv flights, paragliding

Sounds great but I have zero money for entertainment. Going to hike around the city and photograph street scenes and street cats for my cat community on Reddit.

Its a beautiful refreshing place

Good to know.

Thank you!

Removed by Reddit's filters, with the mark NSFW:

FireShot Capture 685 - X-Rain (u_x___rain) - Reddit - www.reddit.com.png

I guessed why it did it; this (because AI could consider that a pose for sexy time):

Uploaded the pictures again without the "NSFW" man on siesta, lol, and it's fine:

Lol, or it could be the vibrant colours (Reddit automated).

Yes, crazy...

Vibrant colours?.. Never heard about this filter. If it exists, it is quite Hinduphopic šŸ˜„

Also, it could be about shock content - the man looks potentially dead šŸ˜„

What vibrant colours. Such beautifully captured scenes, full of stories. It really makes you wonder what is happening or what has happened.

The holy cow by the entrance made me laugh, and that monkey on the cable ā€œpromotingā€ the guest house placard for free, no cheeky monkey drawing needed! And that man and the dog, both wiped out…lol

And you’ve found yourself a kitty, now she or he will miss you when you move and will be looking out for you.

she or he will miss you

Emotionally, she won't miss me (luckily) because I don't see her every day (I leave the food by the hotel entrance) and she doesn't allow me to stroke her (timid, untamed). That's very good because an abandoned house kitty is a very sad story. As for dependence on the food provided by me, a couple of days ago I saw her proudly walking with a mouse in her mouth. So... she'll be fine. She is having kittens (a local told me) so... my support was very timely.

I also think that my kindness taught her that the world doesn't always want to kill her. Maybe, this is overthinking, but I believe cats can understand this: when everyone tries to kick them, they feel hated (extremely low-ranked), so having a friend makes them feel more confident and happy, even after the friend disappears. Of course, they also have the cat world and cat relationships, but cats are empathic and inter-species communicators, so they never completely ignore the attitude of humans, dogs, monkeys, etc, they live among.

That cow that eats rubbish is fatter than the cows that eat grass in my village.

I can see you’re a man of the cold climate; it’s always about 30 degrees here.

I wonder if those boys decided on their own to take part in spiritual rituals or if they simply do it to keep up the tradition; we’ll never know.

Animals are very clever; I’m sure the dogs lie down in high places to feel safer from ground pollution.

I’d love to see those monkeys that watch you in the mornings, and I hope the cat doesn’t miss you too much now that you’ve gone. @x-rain šŸ˜‰
