Street Photographs from Bikaner, India

(Edited)

Bikaner is where I departed from Churu:

Delhi - Churu - Bikaner, that's my railroad Rajasthani trip so far. Bikaner on Google Maps

One of the first shots I took in Bikaner - on October 12, 2025:

DSC_9080.JPG

The presence of ancient technologies, including half-rotten motor rickshaws and hawkers' rusty carts, struck me, and I instantly fell in love with this city.

DSC_9114.JPG

But there was also the hard part - the level of people’s sociability, lol - when you're squeezed between the chaotic traffic and everyone’s friendliness ("hello! where are you from?!"), like between a rock and a hard place, all while trying to watch your path so you don't step on a dog or into a pile of dung.

DSC_9085.JPG

A good illustration of the point above, but in this case, it’s an example of the best kind of friendliness - the guy performed a little show for me and invited me to see his workplace. Grateful to him for that. And saying hello each time I am walking this road, lol.

DSC_9087.JPG

And here, thanks to the kids’ sociability, I got a seemingly great shot:

DSC_9467.JPG

The story is this: I chose the place to shoot the street and then saw these kids on bikes, and they spotted me and headed toward me. It was clear they were going to ask me to take their photo. Meanwhile, I was happily photographing them as they approached. The kids politely asked me to take their picture, lined up, posed, asked for my Instagram, and then started taking selfies with me on their phones... And that's where I started losing my patience... I had gone out around 4 p.m., the best light, basically a solid hour and a half of shooting, and these kids kept me busy for a good 15 minutes, so I literally started straightforwardly requiring them to leave me alone, lol. As they were leaving, they suddenly stopped and started this little communication among themselves - and that's then I shot this scene, happy with the result.

And, yes, the houses are beautiful - the most famous part of the old town, called Rampuria Street. I'll share more images from there in the next post.

DSC_9226.JPG

Rajasthani women, the way they dress is another remarkable thing in Bikaner - all shades of red, from deep orange to dark pink.

DSC_9127.JPG

And this is how they shield themselves from the sun and dust (while local Muslim women wear black). Some men also cover their faces with a scarf - dust in the streets can be disturbing.

DSC_9125.JPG

Since we’re talking about red:

DSC_9434.JPG

A railway runs through the center of the city - a good photo opportunity!

DSC_9128.JPG

This train passes right through this crowd of people - Mahatma Gandhi Road.

Did I tell you men sometimes cover their faces with a cloth? Look above at the guy on a motorbike - this way.

DSC_9131.JPG

A green veil with a golden trim - love it! In the background is the Kote Gate, and this is what’s right beneath it:

DSC_9234.JPG

Another pleasure of India - too see how diversely people look.

And again the Kote Gate, at night this time:

DSC_9642.JPG

These gates are the heart of Bikaner - the Diwali celebration culminated right around them. I got a few decent night portraits during it, but that’s a story for the next time. Thanks for tuning in — I’m clicking "Publish" and running for another late afternoon photo walk in Bikaner! 😊

The photos were taken with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G and a Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D (only the Rampuria Street shot) on a full-frame DSLR Nikon D750 in October, 2025, in Bikaner, Rajasthan, India.

Muchas gracias, Jesus!! 😊😊😊 Pleasure to read such feedback from a fantastic photographer like you!

So much luck here. These kids stopped in front of me and created this triangle and the dog joined this communication, and meanwhile in the background - there could be anything at that lucky moment - for example, a mess of motorbikes and people, but instead this lone motorbike appeared with the headlight on (in the afternoon!) or was it just a powerful sunlight reflection?

The same about the color - kids could wear anything. But here we see only shades of blue and reddish brown.

Yeah!...😀 It's one of those times when: "The universe conspires to give us an epic photo" @x-rain friend!... But the universe is always on the side of those who do this with mysticism, dedication and artistic sensitivity, like you!...

I think your next stop will be Jaisalmer....a perfect time to explore the dessert the festivities around the people.

Jaisalmer

Maybe... I am thoughtfully choosing what will be next. Because apart from famous places, there are less-visited ones which might be worth visiting (like Churu)...

Jodhpur might be next.

The time is perfect, indeed - starting from the weather: it's around +20 at night and +30 at noon - these are perfect temperatures for me. It's not humid here as it was in Southeast Asia - so much better when I don't sweat several liters a day, lol.

This city looks way crowded than the other one, even a bit more curated

But people still very talkative and friendly lol

This city looks way crowded

Very central streets of a city with 700,000 people. Churu was only a 120,000-people place - locals call it "a village" because - very small, lol.

still very talkative and friendly lol

Yes - most Bikaner people are rather small-town guys than metropolis dwellers.

Now that has got some atmosphere, chaos beauty and mayhem, love it. Those two ancient carriages on bike wheels really are something else!

The city appeared to be a good choice as it has sufficient infrastructure, including decent guesthouses, restaurants, and a hypermarket (where I bought oats ❤️ today), and, at the same time, it's mostly non-touristy and has diverse cityscape (as a largish city).

mayhem

Yes, a lot of mayhem. This is what I have been missing since my last visit in 2016.

Those two ancient carriages on bike wheels really are something else!

My next mission in Bikaner is just walking regular streets in search of such artifacts, decay, and art. 😎

I always enjoy seeing how colorful things are in India. I feel like the folks over there do a really good job of standing out!

Whoop! Haha, what artistic photographs, the scenes and the details of the architecture with lamps and soft lights are so well photographed. The dusty street, just barely showing the Kote Gate, contrasts with the colourful attire of the people. Friendly people and a very interesting, colourful place! I like that rusty cart. Oh, and that naan bread would be nice to try, or I could watch how they make it and learn from the locals. I would definitely get one of those garlands that the beautiful lady hawker is selling and walk around with it around my neck, lol, and would pick one of those clay pots, though they seem very tiny! What are they for? lol. Nice one! :)

A tandoor oven. Love it.

those clay pots, though they seem very tiny! What are they for?

These are pots as i know are supposed for candles for the celebration of Diwali, the light festival. But mostly Diwali in this city was the festival of noise - cheap fireworks of all sorts. :( Garland, candles, and bonfires make the world cozy, explosions are the opposite.

what artistic photographs, the scenes and the details of the architecture

Thank you! India is vibrant, with much to photograph and see.

Fifteen minutes for that great photo, it was a good deal with those kids!
And all the other shots, a good look at the city and its people.

A very good deal! :) You never know where communication will lead. Even plain staged posing portraits can become great shots sometimes.

Thank you!
