Hintersee, Bavaria (Secret Lake)

Good day fellow explorers!

Today I want to bring you guys on a little excursion around the Hintersee which is a lake in Ramsau, Bavaria (South Germany). Even I lived close to this area for over 25 years I have never heard or seen anything about this lake until I researched some images a couple of weeks ago.

The next more known location to Ramsau is Berchtesgarden with its famous Königssee (Kingslake). If you've ever been to Bavaria you may have heard of this lake already.

One reason why pretty much no one knows about this place is the fact that this lake is completely hidden inside a small mountain valley. Without google it would be impossible to find and get to this area. It would also be advantageous if you are not to afraid of hights as the road leading there goes trough a VERY small and curvy mountain road.

Let me give you some facts and a bit of background history about this lake (Actually way more interesting than I could have imagined ):

  • Length 830m
  • Broad 480m
  • Deepness 18m
  • Perimeter 2.5 km (It takes you around 30-45 mins to walk around it)

When you walk around the lake you will see quite a lot of information signs about the History from this place. In the early 1900s there were a lot of painters and artists on the Hintersee to paint some incredible pictures from this beautiful landscape. The only painter I really recognized was Wilhelm Buch which is one of the most famous painters in Germany.

Beside the artists also King Ludwig III had one of his houses close to the lake. As you can see, there was a lot going on a while back!

And if the lake wasn't already beautiful enough, the entire area is surrounded by huge mountains which even have some snow on them at the moment. Even I'm not the biggest fan of cold weather the stunning landscape made me forget the 1°C quite fast as I had way to much fun taking pictures and exploring this area.

Every few hundred meters there are also benches where you can sit down to take a break or just to enjoy the landscape while you sit. Not only was the air incredible fresh and good but also all the entire area is extremely clean. The water is completely transparent and you can see the ground all around the lake.

Even its winter time at the moment in Germany there were already a lot of colorful trees around and you can already feel that the spring time is coming soon. I only can imagine how beautiful this place must be in the Summer and Autumn time. I really have to go back in another time of the year again!

In total I've spend about 4 hours around the lake. If it wasn't getting dark already I could have easily spend a few more hours as there is just to much you can do and see. Beside hiking you also have a row of traditional Bavarian restaurants around and also some small shops where you can buy something to drink or even a fresh made Bavarian cake :)

I hope you guys enjoyed this little virtual tour with me around the Hintersee lake in south Bavaria!

More trips will follow soon :))

Best,
Chris
