Framed in glass: Qurator's Photo Quest Competition
Hello again, dear Hive photography community!
This post is my entry for the #Qurator’s Photo Quest – Glass.
This time, I’m taking you on a brief but fascinating visual stop at one of the UK’s most iconic modern structures—Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5.
Just the day before yesterday, I was cycling around the outskirts of Heathrow Airport, taking in the sights and enjoying the unexpected blend of urban energy and open skies. During this ride, I paused at Terminal 5 and took the opportunity to photograph its spectacular glass architecture.
This terminal is truly a marvel of modern design. Constructed between September 2002 and March 2008, Terminal 5 is best known for its expansive use of glass, which defines its futuristic and airy appearance.
The sheer scale of the glasswork is astonishing—30,000 square meters of glass were used throughout the building, creating both exterior and interior surfaces that reflect light beautifully and give the space a sense of openness and fluidity.
The exterior facades alone are made up of more than 5,500 individual glass panels, each contributing to the sleek, shimmering outer shell of the structure. Inside, the design continues to impress, with 24,000 square meters of glazed wall linings that soften the industrial scale and allow natural light to flood the interior.
There’s something about photographing glass that offers both challenge and reward. It reflects, distorts, and frames the world in unpredictable ways. Capturing this material in such a grand and deliberate architectural setting was a joy—and I hope you find these images as intriguing as I found the moment.
Thank you so much for stopping by, supporting my work, and continuing to share your own unique and inspiring perspectives with this wonderful community.
