Plaza de la República of Maracaibo [ENG/ESP]
Taking advantage of my last visit to the city of Maracaibo, Zulia state - Venezuela, I had the intention to visit several places of great importance as cultural, historical and architectural heritage, and of course I could not miss the Plaza de la República, which is basically a square with an imposing obelisk, which stands on the heights of the city of Maracaibo, and is certainly an icon for the population for its architecture and history that is preserved in the years it has been built.
This square was inaugurated in 1945, by decree of the then president of the time Isaías Medina Angarita, who commissioned the engineer Alberto Lopez to be in charge of the construction of the square, obelisk and acoustic court, all in memory of the independence hero Rafael Urdaneta, who also bears his name on the bridge over Lake Maracaibo, and this architectural work was built 100 years after his death.
Aprovechando mí última visita a la ciudad de Maracaibo, estado Zulia - Venezuela, tuve la intención de conocer varios lugares de gran importancia como patrimonio cultural, histórico y arquitectónico, y por supuesto no podía faltar La Plaza de la República, que básicamente es un plaza con imponente obelisco, que se alza sobre las alturas de la ciudad de Maracaibo, y que sin duda es un lugar icono para la población por su arquitectura e historia que se resguarda en los años que tiene construido.
Dicha plaza se inauguró en 1945, por decreto del entonces presidente de la época Isaías Medina Angarita, quien encargó al ingeniero Alberto Lopez en encargarse de la construcción de la plaza, obelisco y la cancha acústica, todo en memoria del prócer de la independencia Rafael Urdaneta, quien también lleva su nombre en el puente sobre el lago de Maracaibo, y esta obra arquitectónica se edificó a sus 100 años de su muerte.
For the historical context in which this square was built, it can be considered as a construction of republican architectural style, where we see the use of materials such as concrete. In an obelisk that is 49 meters high, and has 4 equal faces that meet at the top, thus forming a pyramid at the tip of the obelisk, it is also known that internally in the obelisk there is an electrical system, which was being designed to have an elevator, but after the overthrow of President Medida Angarita, the elevator project was canceled.
The square is composed of 8 entrances, in addition to what we see mainly as the obelisk with its water fountain, the acoustic court, which was designed for presentations or cultural events and the green area that makes up the entire square along with benches for visitors to rest. All of this is a block in this important sector, which is important for its commercial contribution to the city.
Por el contexto histórico la cual fue construido esta plaza, se puede considerar como una construcción de estilo arquitectónico republicano, donde vemos la utilización de materiales como el concreto. En un obelisco que tiene 49 metros de altura, y posee 4 caras iguales que se unen en todo lo alto, formando así una pirámide en toda la punta del obelisco, además se sabe que internamente en el obelisco hay un sistema eléctrico, que se estaba diseñando para que tuviera un ascensor, pero que luego del derrocamiento del presidente Medida Angarita, este proyecto del ascensor fue anulado.
La plaza está compuesta por 8 entradas, además de lo que vemos principalmente como el obelisco con su fuente de agua, la cancha acústica; que fue diseñada para presentaciones o actos culturales y la área verde que compone toda la plaza conjuntamente con bancos para el reposo de los visitantes. Todo abarcando en una manzana en este importante sector que es importante por su aporte comercial en la ciudad.
Without a doubt, it is a work that caught my attention and that I could not miss, even in advance before traveling to the city I had already located the address of this emblematic square, which is part of the regional heritage of the state of Zulia, where cities like Maracaibo with more than 4 centuries of existence, contains an infinity of places and works of great historical and architectural value, being a place of tourist attraction.
In a certain way this obelisk reminds me of the obelisk of Buenos Aires, but it is precisely these constructions that are very symbolic all over the world, being a monument of great value for each of the cities that erect this type of work. From Europe, through Asia and even America, there are a great number of obelisks such as the one in the Plaza de la República, which touch the infinite skies of these towns or metropolises.
Sin duda, es una obra que me llamó mucho la atención y que no podía dejar de visitarlo, incluso con anticipación antes de viajar a la ciudad ya había localizado la dirección de esta emblemática plaza, que forma parte del patrimonio regional del estado Zulia, donde ciudades como Maracaibo con más de 4 siglos de existencia, contiene una infinidad de lugares y obras de gran valor histórico y arquitectónico, siendo un lugar de atractivo turístico.
En cierta forma este obelisco, me recuerda al obelisco de Buenos Aires, pero es que justamente estas construcciones son muy simbólicas por todo el mundo, siendo hace un monumento de gran valor para cada una de la ciudades que levantan este tipo de obra. Desde Europa, pasando por Asia y hasta América, existen una gran infinidad de obeliscos como el de la Plaza de la República, que tocan los cielos infinitos de estos pueblos o metrópolis.
And in the case of Venezuela, I know of 2 large obelisks of great size, as in the case of this obelisk of the Plaza de la República and the obelisk of the city of Barquisimeto, Lara state, which is also recognized for its architectural value, but has different dimensions and shape to the obelisk of the Plaza de la República, but are also among the sites that I have yet to review and photograph.

Y en el caso de Venezuela, conozco de 2 grandes obeliscos de gran tamaño, como 3s el caso de este obelisco de la Plaza de la República y el obelisco de la ciudad de Barquisimeto, estado Lara, que también es reconocido por su valor arquitectónico, pero que tiene unas dimensiones y forma diferentes al obelisco de La Plaza de la República, pero que también están entre los sitios que me faltan por reseñar y fotografiar.

Hi @wilfredocav, certainly a very beautiful place, I like the spiral construction, it gives an incredible sense of movement, the obelisk looks imposing and contrasts perfectly with the clouds.

Maracaibo tiene su encanto, como todas las ciudades de Venezuela, pero de aquí soy y cuando veo que alguien de afuera resalta sus cualidades me enamoro mucho más. Amazing obelisk @wilfredocav. With its imposing facade and gigantic impression, that towering structure obviously portrays a strong design statement for park visitors. Too bad the elevator project was scrapped after the overthrow of one of your government leaders. People could have experienced spectacular panoramas of the surrounding city from the top! Nevertheless, it's still an impressive masterpiece of architecture to behold and cherish for many Venezuelan generations. 😊
