Nature Escapade: Can-umantad Falls and Rice Terraces in Candijay, Bohol

Other wonders on this side of Bohol surprisingly include waterfalls and rice terraces. When you mention Bohol, what instantly comes to mind are the white sand beaches of Panglao.

I was so excited to visit these places in Bohol, as they aren't among the spots that are always crowded. And we visited these places on my 28th birthday!

Can-umantad Falls

The falls and the rice terraces are just a short distance apart. We went to the falls first, not knowing that there was actually a pathway from the rice terraces leading to them. You'll read about this later.

The falls, becoming visible from the road.

Anyway, we hailed a motorcycle to get to the falls, as four-wheeled vehicles aren’t allowed due to the narrow and accident-prone roads. This only meant one thing: a new adventure awaited!

After reaching the parking area, we registered our names for tourism records and were then assigned a tour guide. From there, the falls were just a five-minute walk away.

As you walk towards the falls, you're surrounded by lush greenery. Several natural pools also come into view along the way.

As soon as the falls came into view, I couldn't help but feel enchanted by the towering waterfall. It’s considered the tallest in all of Bohol. Amazing, right?

1000019969.jpg

Good news for non-swimmers like me: the natural pool beneath the waterfall is shallow! I truly enjoyed the experience, letting the water cascade onto my back. It felt like getting a free massage!

On the other side of the falls, there’s another natural pool that's a bit deeper, around five feet. It gets even deeper the farther you go from the falls, so I decided not to swim there anymore.

After an hour of dipping in the natural pool, we decided to head back, just in time for lunch. Our parents were waiting at the parking area because we thought it would be too risky for them to come with us. We were absolutely wrong. We regretted not bringing them along. The walk to the falls was so short and easy, with no difficulties at all.

Rice Terraces

It was my first time seeing the rice terraces in Candijay, Bohol. I’m not sure if there are other places on the island with similar landscapes, but this was definitely a first for me. Honestly, it was so refreshing to take in such beautiful views.

We had our late lunch at a restaurant overlooking the rice terraces. It was literally a breather; you could feel the cool wind blowing and see lush green fields all around.

Surprisingly, the restaurant also had a pathway leading to the falls! If only we had known earlier, we could’ve taken that route. Still, we were glad to be enjoying a good meal after our little adventure.

The meals were definitely worth the reasonable price. They even offer free meals to the group’s driver. So in our case, my father got a free lunch. Although they were short-staffed, the staff member who assisted us was very accommodating.

This trip to Candijay was a refreshing change from the usual beach destinations Bohol is known for. From the hidden waterfalls to the scenic rice terraces, everything felt raw, peaceful, and unspoiled. It reminded me that there’s so much more to explore beyond the popular tourist spots. Sometimes, the real gems are tucked quietly in the corners of the island.
