Walking the dog on Itaguaré beach | Passeando com cachorro na praia de Itaguaré [EN/PT]

Not very well known, Itaguaré beach is located in the municipality of Bertioga, 70 km from the city of São Paulo, Brazil, but next to the much more famous Riviera de São Lourenço. Because it's a private condominium with very strict access and usage rules, Riviera de São Lourenço doesn't allow pets on its beaches, so some residents cross the boundaries to walk their dogs on the neighboring Itaguaré beach. That wasn't our case; despite having a much smaller tourist infrastructure, we preferred to visit and stay in Itaguaré itself, with our dog Popi.

Não muito conhecida, a praia de Itaguaré fica no município de Bertioga, a 70 km da cidade de São Paulo, mas ao lado da bem mais famosa Riviera de São Lourenço. Por ser um condomínio privado, com regras de acesso e uso bastante restritas, Riviera de São Lourenço não permite que animais domésticos sejam levados às praias, por isso alguns moradores de lá atravessam os limites para passear com seus cachorros na praia vizinha de Itaguaré. Não foi nosso caso, apesar de ter uma infraestrutura turística bem menor, preferimos visitar e nos hospedar em Itaguaré mesmo, com nossa cachorra Popi.

Itaguaré is located on the edge of a huge environmental protection area, with vegetation and a beach that are still relatively wild. Apparently, my dog ​​Popi loves it; whenever we go there, we walk along the beach that ends at the banks of the Itaguaré River, which separates it from Guaratuba beach. I've never done this, but when the tide is low it's possible to cross this river on foot. Once, my wife rented a tricycle to take Popi – who appears in the photo at the beginning of the post – but the headwind on the way back made the trip almost exhaustive.

Itaguaré fica no limite de uma enorme área de proteção ambiental, com vegetação e praia ainda relativamente selvagens. Aparentemente minha cachorra Popi adora, sempre que vamos para lá caminhamos junto da praia que termina as margens do Rio Itaguaré que separa da praia de Guaratuba. Nunca fiz isso mas quando a maré está baixa é possível cruzar este rio a pé. Uma vez minha mulher alugou um triciclo pra levar a Popi - que aparece na foto do começo do post - mas o vento contra na volta tornou o passeio mais cansativo.

We always visit Itaguaré outside of peak season to avoid the excessive heat and crowds. Depending on the weather and sea conditions, the beach can be dangerous for swimming. Right at the beach access, on the hill that separates it from Riviera de São Lourenço beach, we see crosses on the rocks. On several occasions, we also saw red flags warning people not to enter the water. There's even a high yellow chair for the lifeguards, but we heard that this surveillance only happens on weekends during peak season.

Sempre visitamos Itaguaré fora da temporada, para evitar o calor excessivo e multidões. Dependendo da situação climática e do mar, a praia pode ser perigosa para banho e nadar. Logo no acesso à praia, na colina que separa da praia da Riviera de São Lourenço, vemos cruzes nas pedras. Em várias ocasiões tb vimos bandeiras vermelhas avisando para ninguém entrar na água. Até existe uma cadeira alta pintada de amarelo para os salva-vidas, mas ouvimos dizer que esta vigilância só acontece nos finais de semana na alta temporada.

After walking our dog, we can't miss the açaí and coffee at the Quintal do Itaguaré snack bar (Instagram @quintaldoitaguare), which is located at the only access to the beach and where we once saw a motorhome parked. When we go there, we stay in houses rented through Airbnb, but suddenly something nomadic like these types of vehicles could be an interesting option with less environmental impact, helping to preserve the amazing ecological reserve so close to densely populated areas.

Depois de passear com a nossa cachorra, não pode faltar o açaí com café ali na lanchonete Quintal do Itaguaré (Instagram @quintaldoitaguare), que fica no único acesso à praia e que um dia vimos estacionados um motor home. Quando vamos lá ficamos em casas alugadas pelo Airbnb mas de repente algo nômade como estes tipos de veículos podem ser uma opção interessante e com menos impacto ambiental, ajudando a preservar a surpreendente reserva ecológica tão perto de locais densamente povoados.
