The Story Behind our Town's Name: "ALIBHON" - Blumea balsamifera / Sambong ENG|ESP

Hello hivers.. I am back with some important facts about plants.. and today, I will be discussing about "Blumea balsamifera" or "Sambong".. but in our local dialect, we call it ALIBHON..
TRIVIA - did you know that our town was named after this plant "ALIBHON"?? 🤓
Yes, this plant grows everywhere in our town.. even years before it got it's name.. So, they named it after this plant.. It's a common practice here in the Philippines to name places based on the flowers, plants, or trees abundantly growing in that area..
So, when people ask me, "Where do you live?".. I can say, "I live in Blumea balsamifera also known as ALIBHON" 😆

CURIOSIDADES: ¿Sabían que nuestro pueblo recibió su nombre de esta planta, "ALIBHON"? 🤓
Sí, esta planta crece por todas partes en nuestro pueblo... incluso años antes de que recibiera su nombre. Así que le pusieron el nombre de esta planta. Es común aquí en Filipinas nombrar lugares según las flores, plantas o árboles que crecen abundantemente en esa zona.
Así que, cuando me preguntan "¿Dónde vives?", puedo decir: "Vivo en Blumea balsamifera, también conocida como ALIBHON". 😆

This Alibhon Plant literally grows everywhere.. there were a lot of them growing in our vacant lot in front of our house.. some are even covered in vines, but still thriving.. so, whenever we needed herbal medicine, it's just a few steps away.. 😊
The leaves are soft and hairy.. You can feel tiny hair when you touch the leaves.. The edges are grooved which looks like tiny teeth.. the leaves are elongated and can grow up to 20 cm long.. the mature ALIBHON plant can grow up to 4 meters high or as tall as a banana plant.. 😃 but they can't grow that much in our town because people love picking the leaf shoots for tea.. 😊
this ALIBHON plant has a strong woody and camphor-like smell.. it has a pungent taste and a little hint of menthol.. Kids don't like it.. 😊

Esta planta de alibhon crece literalmente en todas partes... Había muchas en nuestro terreno baldío frente a nuestra casa. Algunas incluso están cubiertas de enredaderas, pero siguen prosperando... así que, siempre que necesitábamos hierbas medicinales, estaban a solo unos pasos... 😊
Las hojas son suaves y peludas. Se pueden sentir pequeños pelitos al tocarlas. Los bordes tienen ranuras que parecen dientes diminutos. Las hojas son alargadas y pueden crecer hasta 20 cm de largo. La planta madura de alibhon puede alcanzar hasta 4 metros de altura, o tan alta como un banano... 😃 Pero no crecen tanto en nuestro pueblo porque a la gente le encanta recoger las hojas. Brotes para té... 😊
Esta planta de ALIBHON tiene un fuerte olor a madera y alcanfor. Tiene un sabor picante y un ligero toque a mentol. A los niños no les gusta... 😊

Now, let's talk about the health benefits of this ALIBHON plant..
KIDNEY HEALTH - drinking the extract of ALIBHON can improve urination, which helps remove harmful toxins in our kidneys.. it can reduce the size of kidney stones and can also help prevent kidney stones from forming.. to avoid dehydration due to frequent urination, you need to give your body an adequate amount of liquid, too..

The plant looks like the bitter leaf we have here, which is used to prepare various types of native soups. You can also squeeze the leaves and drink for stomach upset.
