Hola amigos de hive, el día de hoy les hablaré de una experiencia muy bonita, de la cual fui participe, la semana pasada, junto a mi esposa y mis tres hijos. Mis niños se encontraban de vacaciones en la semana de receso escolar y mi esposa y yo decidimos hacer una excursión a la Loma de la Cruz, sitio emblemático de la ciudad de Holguín.

My children were on vacation during the week of school break and my wife and I decided to go on an excursion to Loma de la Cruz, an emblematic site in the city of Holguín.

Decidimos subir la loma en el horario de la tarde, para evitar el sol de la mañana y así apreciar la belleza de la ciudad. Después de un rico almuerzo en el restaurant Rincón de las Romerías, y luego de acopiar abundante agua para beber, comenzamos el trayecto por la calle Maceo que nos dirige directamente a la escalinata de la loma.

We decided to climb the hill in the afternoon, to avoid the morning sun and appreciate the beauty of the city. After a delicious lunch at the Rincón de las Romerías restaurant, and after collecting plenty of water to drink, we began our walk along Maceo Street, which leads us directly to the steps of the hill.

Al llegar a la base de la afamada loma comencé a tirar fotos para archivarlas y tener un bonito recuerdo. La escalada de los 458 escalones comenzó alrededor de las 3:30 pm, el sol ya no estaba tan intenso y había una brisa formidable. En la base de la escalinata hay un cañón de hierro de la época de la colonia española en Cuba, que formaba parte del sistema defensivo de la ciudad.

When I reached the base of the famous hill, I began to take pictures to archive them and have a nice souvenir. The climb of the 458 steps began around 3:30 pm, the sun was no longer so intense and there was a formidable breeze. At the base of the staircase there is an iron cannon from the time of the Spanish colony in Cuba, which was part of the defensive system of the city.

Poco a poco comenzamos el ascenso, en la medida que subíamos iba apareciendo la hermosa ciudad a nuestros pies. Los niños comenzaron a subir prácticamente corriendo; y lógicamente se cansaban muy rápido y en los descansos de la escalinata pedían agua y reposaban en sus bancos. La vista cada vez se veía más exuberante y el campo visual de la ciudad con todos sus repartos nos deslumbraba aún más.

Little by little we began the ascent, and as we climbed, the beautiful city appeared at our feet. The children began to climb practically running; and logically they got tired very fast and in the rests of the stairs they asked for water and rested in their benches. The view was becoming more and more exuberant and the visual field of the city with all its divisions dazzled us even more.

El niño más pequeño me preguntó porque le decían “La loma de la cruz”, y le expliqué que es llamada así, porque en la cima existe una gran cruz de madera que fue subida en el año 1790 por el fraile Francisco Antonio de Alegría, anteriormente era llamado cerro Bayado, hasta que tomó el nombre actual. La cruz es un símbolo de protección para muchas personas que van hasta allí a colocar ofrendas religiosas y a cumplir promesas.

The youngest child asked me why they called it "La loma de la cruz" (the hill of the cross), and I explained that it is called that way because at the top there is a large wooden cross that was raised in 1790 by the friar Francisco Antonio de Alegría, previously it was called Cerro Bayado, until it took its current name. The cross is a symbol of protection for many people who go there to place religious offerings and to fulfill promises.

En la mitad del camino, el cansancio de los niños era notable, pero las ganas de llegar a la cima y la fuerza de voluntad que mi esposa y yo les imponíamos, les hicieron avanzar. Hasta que al fin logramos llegar a la cumbre, y luego de una bocanada de aire puro y tomar agua, empezamos a disfrutar de la belleza de este lugar. Justo en la cima se encuentra un fuerte español que era utilizado en la guerra contra los mambises. Los niños fueron observando la ciudad y lograban localizar los lugares más conocidos por ellos como puntos de referencias, como por ejemplo el 18 plantas, el estadio de pelota, la plaza de la revolución, la torre de comunicaciones de la central telefónica ETECSA.

Halfway up, the children were getting tired, but the desire to reach the summit and the willpower that my wife and I imposed on them, made them move forward. Until we finally reached the summit, and after a breath of fresh air and a drink of water, we began to enjoy the beauty of this place. Right at the top is a Spanish fort that was used in the war against the Mambises. The children were observing the city and were able to locate the most known places for them as landmarks, such as the 18th floors, the ball stadium, the square of the revolution, the communications tower of the telephone exchange ETECSA.

El momento fue propicio para tirar varias fotos en los miradores que posee el sitio. Luego nos trasladamos hacia la zona donde se encuentra el restaurant de la loma, el cual queda a pocos metros de donde se encuentra la escalinata, donde aprovechamos para acopiar agua para los pequeños. Desde allí apreciamos que por la sequía que existe en esta época del año había zonas del cerro totalmente quemadas, una lástima que las autoridades competentes se descuiden y se eviten estos lamentables hechos para así proteger la flora y la fauna.

The moment was propitious to take several pictures in the viewpoints that the site has. Then we moved to the area where the restaurant of the hill is located, which is a few meters from where the staircase is located, where we took the opportunity to collect water for the little ones. From there we appreciate that due to the drought that exists at this time of the year there were areas of the hill completely burned, a pity that the competent authorities neglect and avoid these unfortunate events in order to protect the flora and fauna.

Luego de disfrutar alrededor de dos horas de este bello lugar, llegó la hora de la partida, el descenso por la escalinata; el cual hay que realizarlo con gran cuidado para evitar una caída, pues si te dejas llevar se coge un gran impulso al bajar. La experiencia realmente fue gratificante y los niños disfrutaron al máximo, en las próximas vacaciones volveremos. Espero que les haya gustado el post, nos vemos.

After enjoying about two hours of this beautiful place, it was time to go down the stairs, which must be done with great care to avoid a fall, because if you get carried away you get a great momentum when descending.
