Hello World Mappin community, today I want to share with you an experience I had in one of the most beautiful places in my province, the Taíno Village of Guamá, in the heart of the Zapata Swamp, Matanzas, Cuba.

This trip begins by road, the Zapata Swamp is located in the southern area of the province, it is necessary to take the highway and reach the Australia junction, from where you get to the Australia sugar mill and continue south, pass the mill and keep going until you reach Boca de Guamá.

Upon arriving at Boca de Guamá we find that there are several attractions, there is a crocodile farm as the main attraction, although there are also turtles and other species native to the area. There is also space for gastronomy and recreation while waiting for your turn to board the boat.

The Village is located in the heart of the Zapata Swamp National Park, the largest natural reserve in Cuba. To get there, you must first reach Boca de Guamá, and from there take a boat to travel 8 km through the Treasure Lagoon, along freshwater channels surrounded by vegetation typical of the wetland.

The boat trip itself is already an experience. The silence of the water, the flight of the herons and the reflection of the sun among the mangroves make you feel that time stands still. At every moment it feels as if we were in a movie, between the adrenaline generated by the speed of the boat, the beautiful views of both the channels and the exit to the Treasure Lagoon, which is huge and impressive, I almost forgot to take out my phone to capture the moment, being careful of course because if it falls into the water, goodbye. Little by little, the Taíno sculptures begin to appear among the islets, stone and wooden figures that seem to guard the place.

The Taíno Village was inaugurated in 1962 and designed by the sculptor Rita Longa, famous for emblematic works of Cuba, the artist recreated an aboriginal community and gave the sculptures great naturalness and realism by representing them in their daily activities such as fishing, making cassava bread, hunting, and you even feel as if they were alive when standing in front of them. Everything is on islets connected by wooden bridges, which creates a magical and serene atmosphere.

Guamá is not only a tourist attraction; it is also a symbol of identity. Its name pays homage to the Taíno chief Guamá, one of the leaders who resisted the Spanish colonization. Walking through the village is like traveling to the past and remembering the oldest roots of the Cuban people.

A very big attraction is undoubtedly the Treasure Lagoon since it harbors a rich biodiversity, fish, birds, crocodiles, and lush vegetation.

Visiting Guamá was one of those experiences that leave a mark. When you feel the silence of the water, see the sculptures emerging among the channels and think about the first inhabitants of the island, it was almost like going back in time. It is a place that invites reflection on our roots and the value of nature.

Guamá descubriendo la Aldea Taína y la Laguna del Tesoro.

Hola comunidad World Mappin, hoy quiero compartirles una experiencia que viví en uno de los lugares más bonitos de mi provincia, la Aldea Taína de Guamá, en plena Ciénaga de Zapata, Matanzas, Cuba.

Este viaje comienza por carretera, la ciénaga de Zapata se encuentra en la zona sur de la provincia, es necesario tomar la autopista y llegar al entronque de Australia, por dónde se llega al central Australia y continuar camino hacia el sur pasar el central y seguir hasta llegar a Boca de Guamá.

Al llegar a Boca de Guamá nos encontramos que hay varias atracciones, ahí se encuentra un criadero de cocodrilos como principal atractivo, aunque también hay tortugas, y otras especies propias de la zona. También hay espacio para la gastronomía y el esparcimiento mientras se espera el turno de abordar la lancha.

La Aldea se encuentra en el corazón del Parque Nacional Ciénaga de Zapata, la mayor reserva natural de Cuba. Para llegar, es necesario llegar primero a Boca de Guamá, y desde allí se toma una lancha recorrer 8 km por la Laguna del Tesoro, entre canales de agua dulce rodeados de vegetación típica del humedal.

El trayecto en lancha ya es una experiencia en sí. El silencio del agua, el vuelo de las garzas y el reflejo del sol entre los manglares hacen sentir que el tiempo se detiene. A cada paso se siente como si estuviéramos en una película, entre la adrenalina que genera el viaje en lancha que es bien rápida, las bellas vistas tanto de los canales como al salir a la laguna del tesoro, que es enorme e impresionante, casi olvido sacar el móvil para inmortalizar el momento, teniendo cuidado claro porque si cae al agua adiós. Poco a poco comienzan a verse las esculturas taínas emergiendo entre los islotes, figuras de piedra y madera que parecen custodiar el lugar.

La Aldea Taína fue inaugurada en 1962 y diseñada por la escultora Rita Longa, famosa por obras emblemáticas de Cuba, la artista recreó una comunidad aborigen y le dió a las esculturas mucha naturalidad y realismo al representarlas en sus actividades diarias como la pesca, elaboración de casabe, cazando, incluso llega uno a sentir como si tuvieran vida cuando estás frente a ellas. Todo está sobre islotes conectados por puentes de madera, lo que crea una atmósfera mágica y serena.

Guamá no es solo una atracción turística; es también un símbolo de identidad. Su nombre rinde homenaje al cacique taíno Guamá, uno de los líderes que resistió la colonización española. Caminar por la aldea es como viajar al pasado y recordar las raíces más antiguas del pueblo cubano.

Un atractivo muy grande es sin dudas, la Laguna del Tesoro ya que alberga una rica biodiversidad, peces, aves, cocodrilos y una vegetación exuberante.

Visitar Guamá fue una de esas vivencias que dejan huella. Cuando sientes el silencio del agua, ver las esculturas surgir entre los canales y pensar en los primeros habitantes de la isla fue casi como retroceder en el tiempo. Es un lugar que invita a reflexionar sobre nuestras raíces y el valor de la naturaleza.
