Recorrido por la perla escondida de Cumaná: Plaza Bolívar y sus alrededores[Esp-Eng ]
Aquí comparto mi visita a la Plaza Bolívar, situada entre las calles Sucre y Bolívar, en el casco histórico de Cumaná. Se encuentra en un punto de encuentro con importantes instituciones y museos; de hecho, la Plaza Bolívar —que rinde homenaje al Libertador Simón Bolívar— es un elemento distintivo de todas las ciudades de Venezuela.
La estatua puede representar al personaje a caballo o de pie; en este caso, el Libertador aparece de pie y con la espada en la mano. La plaza cuenta con jardines a ambos lados y una amplia zona pavimentada con concreto. A la izquierda se alza la actual sede del gobierno estatal, seguida por la Casa Andrés Eloy Blanco y la oficina de Fundacultura. Al otro lado se encuentran la antigua sede del gobierno y un colorido mural, seguidos por el Instituto Carmelitas, una de las escuelas más antiguas de la ciudad. Este edificio de color beige cuenta con una cerca perimetral frontal y exhibe el logotipo de la institución; su estructura se extiende hasta la siguiente esquina, donde conecta con la calle La Ermita. El Castillo de San Antonio de la Eminencia también se ubica muy cerca de esta escuela, ya que los principales hitos arquitectónicos, culturales e históricos de la ciudad convergen en este distrito histórico.
Here, I share my visit to Plaza Bolívar, located between Sucre and Bolívar streets in Cumaná’s historic center. It sits at a junction with important institutions and museums; indeed, a Plaza Bolívar—serving as a tribute to the Liberator Simón Bolívar—is a hallmark of every city in Venezuela.
The statue may depict the figure on horseback or standing; in this instance, the Liberator is shown standing with a sword in hand. The plaza features gardens on either side and a large concrete-paved area. To the left stands the current seat of the state government, followed by the Andrés Eloy Blanco House and the Fundacultura office. On the other side lies the former government headquarters and a colorful mural, followed by the Carmelitas Institute—one of the city's oldest schools. The beige building features a front perimeter fence and displays the school's logo; its structure extends to the next corner, meeting La Ermita Street. The San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle is also located very close to this school, as the city's key architectural, cultural, and historical landmarks converge in this historic district.
La estatua del Libertador se alza sobre un pedestal de color beige, cerca de una de las entradas laterales que conducen a la nueva sede del gobierno; la plaza cuenta con bancos de granito a lo largo de sus bordes —flanqueando los jardines— y una variada vegetación que abarca desde árboles frutales, palmeras y plantas ornamentales hasta grandes ejemplares como la higuera estranguladora.
A continuación, se observan vistas de la antigua sede del gobierno, un edificio blanco de diseño llamativo con una escultura en la parte posterior; entre sus elementos visibles destacan columnas y cornisas inspiradas en la arquitectura colonial. También se aprecian senderos de hormigón rodeados de jardines, así como la escuela Nuestra Señora del Carmen y, al otro lado, la fachada de Fundacultura, que sobresale por sus colores vivos y una cornisa caracterizada por líneas horizontales y verticales.
Otra perspectiva muestra la calle Catedral, con los muros distintivos que separan la Plaza Bolívar de la Plaza Pichincha y conducen hacia la calle La Ermita. Asimismo, se observa una vista frontal de la escuela Las Carmelitas, incluyendo su fachada, la entrada y los bancos situados frente a ella, junto a un pequeño jardín rectangular rodeado de bancos; estos últimos, que forman parte de la Plaza Bolívar, no cuentan con respaldo y están construidos con granito y vigas de hierro.
The statue of the Liberator stands on a beige pedestal near one of the side entrances leading to the new government headquarters; the plaza features granite benches along its edges—flanking the gardens—and a variety of vegetation ranging from fruit trees, palms, and ornamental plants to large trees like the strangler fig.
Next, we see views of the former government headquarters, a white building with a striking design and a sculpture at the rear; visible features include columns and cornices inspired by colonial architecture. We also see concrete walkways bordered by gardens, as well as the Nuestra Señora del Carmen school and, on the other side, the façade of Fundacultura, which stands out for its vibrant colors and a cornice featuring horizontal and vertical lines.
Another view shows Catedral Street, with the distinctive walls separating Plaza Bolívar from Plaza Pichincha and leading toward La Ermita Street. We also see a front view of the Las Carmelitas school—including its façade, entrance, and the benches situated in front of it—along with a small rectangular garden surrounded by benches; these benches, which belong to Plaza Bolívar, feature backrests and are constructed from granite and iron beams.
Al finalizar el recorrido, se pueden admirar las diversas plantas de la plaza incluyendo varias especies de palmeras y árboles de gran tamaño, así como los senderos flanqueados por bancos y una amplia zona de hormigón destinada a actividades culturales y recreativas. A continuación, vemos los muros a lo largo de la calle Catedral, la vegetación frente a la escuela y una vista de la casa de Andrés Eloy Blanco y de la sede de la Gobernación. Por último, aparece un edificio amarillo que alberga el Café Antaño, un establecimiento bellamente decorado y de reciente apertura en la ciudad.
Continuando por la calle Catedral, observamos la esquina de la escuela Nuestra Señora del Carmen, destacando sus columnas frontales y la franja de granito beige que recorre el muro. As the tour concludes, one can admire the various plants found in the square—including several species of palms and large trees—along with the walkways lined with benches and a spacious concrete area used for cultural and recreational activities. Next, we see the walls along Catedral Street, the greenery in front of the school, and a view of the Andrés Eloy Blanco house and the Governor's Office headquarters. Finally, there is a yellow building housing Café Antaño—a beautifully decorated establishment that is relatively new to the city.
Moving along Catedral Street, we observe the corner of the Nuestra Señora del Carmen school, noting its front columns and the beige granite band running along the wall. Then, we see a photo of Bolívar Street, the façade of the former Governor's Office, and the benches situated in this part of the square, along with the lampposts and palm trees that adorn the area. Finally, we view the back of the sculpture, the Café Antaño building, and the Cumaná Athenaeum—a green building with brown windows and a black band along the base of the wall. Plaza Bolívar is a key city meeting point due to its location; its spaces host various cultural and recreational activities, as well as national commemorations featuring floral offerings to the Liberator.
