Hoy comparto una breve reseña del puente Tunapuy, situado en la carretera nacional que conecta el municipio de Benítez con la entrada a la localidad del mismo nombre. La estructura del puente es sencilla: consta de dos muros, uno a cada lado de la vía, que salvan el paso sobre un río estacional cuyo caudal aumenta durante la temporada de lluvias. El día de mi visita, el lecho del río aún estaba seco, lo que dejaba a la vista la abundante vegetación circundante y el pequeño canal por donde discurre el agua. Los muros del puente presentan franjas amarillas y blancas, y a ambos lados se aprecia una frondosa vegetación. En lo que va de año, el caudal no ha crecido, ya que las precipitaciones han sido insuficientes para llenar las cabeceras —situadas varios kilómetros aguas arriba— hasta el punto de provocar un desbordamiento en esta zona. Los habitantes de la localidad aprovechan los terrenos aledaños al río para cultivar especies de ciclo corto; en las proximidades abundan las plantas de plátano y banano, así como plantas con flores y grandes árboles que bordean el curso del agua.
Here, I’d like to share a brief look at the Tunapuy Bridge, located on the national highway between the Benítez municipality and the entrance to the town of the same name. The bridge itself is simple, consisting of two walls on either side of the road spanning a seasonal river that swells during the rainy season; on the day of my visit, the riverbed was still dry, revealing abundant surrounding vegetation and a small channel where the water flows. The bridge walls are marked with yellow and white stripes, and lush greenery is visible on both sides. So far this year, the stream has not risen, as rainfall has been insufficient to fill the headwaters—located several kilometers upstream—to the point of overflowing into this area. Local residents use the land around the river to cultivate short-cycle crops; the area near the river abounds with plantain and banana plants, as well as flowering plants and large trees lining the water's path.
Tras caminar varios kilómetros desde Los Arroyos hasta el puente, observé la exuberante vegetación y noté cómo muchas viviendas aprovechan sus patios delanteros y traseros para cultivar productos como aguacates, cocos, plátanos y yuca, entre otros. El puente tiene una longitud aproximada de cinco metros; al cruzarlo, se ve un letrero con el nombre del municipio Benítez, lo que indica que, tras atravesarlo, se entra en el municipio Libertador, y apenas cinco metros más adelante, uno se encuentra ya en Benítez. After walking several kilometers from Los Arroyos to the bridge, I observed the lush vegetation and noticed how many of the homes use their front and back yards to grow crops such as avocados, coconuts, plantains, and cassava, among others. The bridge is approximately five meters long; upon crossing it, you see a sign bearing the name of the Benítez municipality—indicating that once you cross, you enter the Libertador municipality, and just five meters further on, you are in Benítez. The national highway offers beautiful scenery, abundant greenery, and an incredible view of the sky at the time of my visit.
