Pebbles and Promises - by the Baltic Shore
The morning sun bathed the rocky shoreline in a cold, silvery light. Each pebble, rounded by centuries of ocean breath, glistened under the clear blue sky. A soft breeze carried the salty scent of the Baltic Sea, and the sound of waves brushing the stones provided a rhythm that echoed gently in the air.
Anna walked slowly, her black coat trailing just above the stones, her boots crunching softly beneath her. She had always found peace here, on this quiet stretch of coast where time seemed to pause, holding its breath. But today, it was not peace she sought. It was him.
Ahead, the wind curled around a familiar silhouette. Erik. Standing still at the water’s edge, hands in his pockets, staring out where the sea met sky. Anna felt her breath catch. Two years. Two long years had passed since that last argument, that hurried goodbye, that silence.
He turned.
For a heartbeat, neither moved. The world around them—the wind, the gulls, the waves—seemed to fall away. Then Erik smiled, slow and unsure, like a sunrise testing the sky. Anna stepped forward.
“You still come here,” she said, her voice barely more than a whisper.
“I never stopped,” he replied. “This place… it always reminded me of you.”
They stood, side by side, as the tide crept closer, lapping at the stones like time trying to undo itself.
“I used to think,” Anna began, staring down at the pebbles, “that if I waited long enough, the sea would bring you back.”
Erik chuckled softly, a sound wrapped in regret. “I thought the same. That the tide would carry me to the right words.”
Anna knelt and picked up a small white stone, its surface smooth and cool. She turned it in her fingers. “We were always a little like these,” she said. “Rough, broken... but shaped by time.”
He took the stone from her palm and closed it in his. “Then maybe we still have time.”
Silence stretched between them, but it wasn’t the old, aching silence anymore. It was possibility.
Anna nodded slowly. “Let’s walk.”
They moved together now, footsteps falling into rhythm along the stony shore, shadows growing long behind them as the sun climbed higher. The sea, watching as always, whispered promises in the language of waves and wind.
And the pebbles—thousands of them—bore silent witness to a love quietly reborn.
