My Aegean Tour - Part 3: Temple of Apollo, Didyma, Aydın [ENG-TUR]

From the beginning of the pandemic until 2023, I had taken domestic vacations towards end of the summer season due to the pandemic and economic crisis. I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods anyway. I want to explore new places as much as possible. Last year, I realized the Aegean tour that I had planned long before. I could not travel all over the Aegean, but in this travel post series, I write about the places I could visit in detail in the Aegean. The third of those is Temple of Apollo, which is located in Didyma Ancient City of Aydın province.

Pandeminin başlangıcından 2023 yılına kadar, pandemi ve ekonomik kriz nedeniyle yurtiçinde yaz sezonu sonlarına doğru tatile çıkıyordum. Zaten otel deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil şeklini sevmiyorum. Mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Geçen yıl uzun zamandır yapmayı planladığım Ege turunu gerçekleştirdim. Ege’nin her yerini gezemedim ama bu gezi yazısı serisinde sizlere Ege’de detaylı gezebildiğim yerlerden bahsedeceğim. Bunlardan üçüncüsü Aydın ilinin Didim Antik Şehri’nde bulunan Apollo Tapınak’ıdır.

I write about Ephesus Ancient City and Şirince Village in the first and the second posts of this travel post series. After the Şirince tour, we set off for Didim towards the evening. It was past nine o'clock when we arrived in Didim. We found an aparthotel close to the beach at an affordable price. Leaving our stuffs, we went out to eat and for a walk. Although the tourism season was over, the restaurants and bars in Didim were not empty.

Bu gezi yazıları serisinin birinci ve ikinci yazısında sizlere Efes Antik Kenti ve Şirince Köyü’nden bahsetmiştim. Şirince turundan sonra akşama doğru Didim’e yola çıktık. Didim’e vardığımızda saat dokuz geçmişti. Hemen uygun fiyata, sahile yakın bir yerde apart otel bulduk. Eşyalarımızı bıraktıktan sonra dışarıya yemek yemeye ve biraz gezmeye çıktık. Turizm sezonu bitmiş olmasına karşın Didim’deki mekanlar boş değildi.

The next morning we got up early and had breakfast. The weather was very fine. Having walked around the beach for a while, we decided to swim in Altınkum beach. Though Altinkum is a small beach, we liked the sand and the sea very much. They say that the beach is bulging at the seams in summer months. Some parts of the sea were cold and some parts were warm, but it was still a good time to swim. We spent time here until noon. I took a few photos in the previous evening and morning around Altınkum.

Ertesi sabah erkenden kalkıp kahvaltı yaptık. Hava çok güzeldi. Biraz sahilde dolaştıktan sonra Altınkum plajında denize girmeye karar verdik. Altınkum plajı küçük olmasına karşın kumu ve denizi çok beğendik. Yaz aylarında bu plajda adım atacak yer olmadığını söylüyorlar. Denizin bazı yerleri soğuk bazı yerleri sıcaktı, yine de denize girmek için gayet güzel bir zamandı. Öğlene kadar burda vakit geçirdik. Altınkum ve çevresinde önceki akşam ve sabah birkaç fotoğraf çektim.

We left the beach towards noon and went to eat. Our afternoon plan was to visit the Temple of Apollo and Miletus Ancient City. It takes about 10 mins by car to reach The Temple of Apollo from Altınkum. When we arrived at the temple, there was nobody but a few tourists. It was an ideal time for walking in the temple. We entered the temple scanning our museum cards. First of all, I can say that the Temple of Apollo was the largest ancient structure I had ever seen. For sure, I immediately fell into the mystical atmosphere of the temple. I started to think about the people who lived at that time and how they built this temple.

Öğleye doğru plajdan ayrıldık ve yemek yemeye gittik. Öğleden sonraki planımız Apollo Tapınağını ve Milet Antik Şehri’ni gezmekti. Altınkum’dan Apollo Tapınağı’na ulaşmak arabayla yaklaşık 10 dakika sürüyor. Tapınağa vardığımızda birkaç turist dışında kimse yoktu. Tapınakta gezmek için ideal bir ortamdı. Müze kartlarımızla giriş yaptık. Öncelikle şunu söyleyelim Apollo Tapınağı benim şimdiye kadar gördüğüm en büyük antik yapı idi. Ben tabi hemen tapınağın mistik havasına kapıldım. O dönemde yaşayan insanları ve bu tapınağı nasıl yaptıklarını düşünmeye başladım.

It is stated in the informative board inside the temple that this place was considered a holy place before the Ancient Greeks and that there was a sacred road connecting it with the Ancient City of Miletus. Only three huge columns of the temple, which has seen many wars and earthquakes over the years, have survived. I took some photos from outside and inside the temple as well as the adyton floor.

Tapınak içindeki bilgilendirme yazılarında buranın Antik Yunanlardan önce de kutsal bir yer olarak kabul edildiği ve Milet Antik Kenti ile burayı birbirine bağlayan bir kutsal yolun bulunduğu belirtiliyor. Yıllar içinde birçok savaş ve deptem gören tapınağın sadece üç tane devasa olan sütünları ayakta kalabilmiş. Tapınağın dışından, içinden ve adyton zemininden birkaç fotoğraf çektim.
