San Carlos De Borromeo Castle in Pampatar - Margarita Island [ENG/ESP]

Today I visited the Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo (named after the saint). Construction began in 1622, and for more than 60 years it was inhabited by pirates, destroyed by attacks and rebuilt on many occasions. It was designed by the military engineer Don Juan Betín, with the intention of defending that area that was strategic against pirates and corsairs that were stalking the island.

Hoy visité el Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo (su nombre en honor al santo). Se empezó a construir en el año 1622, y durante más de 60 años fue habitado por piratas, destruido por ataques y reconstruido en muchas ocasiones. Fue diseñado por el ingeniero militar Don Juan Betín, con la intención de defender esa zona que era estratégica contra piratas y corsarios que asechaban la isla.

The main entrance has a mural of more than 5 meters high and is accessed by a drawbridge where you reach a central courtyard with the doors that led to the dungeons. The entrance to the castle is free, but most tourists prefer to pay a guide to tell them the detailed history from the moment you enter and do the whole tour, since the interesting thing about visiting this place is its history.

La entrada principal tiene un mural de más de 5 metros de altura y se accede por un puente levadizo donde llegas a un patio central con las puertas que llevaban a los calabozos. La entrada al Castillo es gratis, pero la mayoría de los turistas prefiere pagar un guía que les cuente la historia detallada desde que entras y haces todo el recorrido, ya que lo interesante de visitar este lugar, es su historia.

This is the central courtyard that you get after you enter. In this courtyard they currently entertain the tourists that visit it. Despite the age of the place, it is very well preserved and there are always staff taking care of the place at the entrance.

Este viene siento el patio central que consigues luego de que entras. En este patio actualmente hacen entretenimientos con los turistas que lo visitan. A pesar del tiempo que tiene el lugar, lo conservan super bien y siempre hay personal cuidando el lugar en la entrada.

In addition, you can find entrepreneurs carrying their works of art such as paintings of Margarita Island, handmade boats, miniature replicas of the copper-plated castle and many other souvenirs for the fridge.

Además, puedes encontrar emprendedores que llevan sus obras de arte como cuadros de la Isla de Margarita, lanchas hechas a mano, réplicas en miniatura del castillo bañado en cobre y muchos otros souvenirs para la nevera.

That day there was a group of tourists and they were doing the typical fun show in the form of a parody, where they simulated shooting each other with guns that they used to use in the past and still keep for the public. The idea of this entertainment is simply to have a nice and funny time.

Ese día justo había un grupo de turistas y estaban haciendo el típico show divertido en forma de parodia, donde simulaban dispararse con armas que utilizaban en tiempo atrás y aún conservan para el público. La idea de este entretenimiento es simplemente pasar un rato ameno y divertido.

At the entrance on the right hand side of the castle, you can see a "statue" in the corner, which is really a man who dresses and makes up completely like a pirate, with the intention of continuing to entertain tourists, since most approach with the intention of taking a picture without knowing that it is real and at the time of the photo, scares them by pointing the gun at them. Many are scared and it is fun, however that day I went with my grandmother and I was a little afraid that she would be scared so I warned her beforehand that it was not a statue.

En la entrada a mano derecha del castillo, se puede observar una “estatua” en toda la esquina, que realmente es un hombre que se viste y maquilla por completo como un pirata, con la intención de seguir entreteniendo a los turistas, ya que la mayoría se acercan con la intención de sacarse una foto sin saber que es real y al momento de la foto, los asusta apuntándoles con el arma. Muchos se asustan y es divertido, sin embargo ese día fui con mi abuela y me dio un poco de miedo que se asustará así que le advertí antes de que no era una estatua.

Here you can see in detail each part of the facilities and how well preserved it is in spite of time, since it is a historic place to visit.

Aquí pueden observar detalladamente cada parte de las instalaciones y lo bien conservado que está a pesar del tiempo, ya que es un lugar histórico para visitar.

They also had a deep water well. In the act of drawing water from a well as in the symbolism of fishing, there is the purifying process of drawing from the depths of the hole. Also the act of looking at the bottom of a well and contemplating the water of a lake are representations of a mystical contemplative act.

También tenían un pozos profundos de agua. En el acto de sacar agua de un pozo como en el simbolismo de la pesca, se hace el proceso purificador de extraer desde lo más profundo del hoyo. También el acto de mirar el fondo de un pozo y contemplar el agua de un lago son representaciones de un acto místico contemplativo.

In the courtyard there are cubicles, which were once dungeons where the heroine of the Independence of Venezuela and wife of General Juan Bautista Arismendi: "Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi" was detained. It is said that she was detained for a long time in that dark dungeon and lost the life of her baby in there, then she was taken to La Guaira - Venezuela, then transferred to Cadiz - Spain and then on May 3, 1818 she arrived to Philadelphia where she was given friendship and support. At the same time, she was given freedom and the faculty to establish her residence wherever she wished, which she decided to live in Caracas until the day of her death on June 2, 1866. Her remains were transferred to the National Pantheon on August 24, 1877, becoming the first woman whose remains rest there.

En el patio existen cubículos, que eran en su momento calabozos en donde estuvo detenida la heroína de la Independencia de Venezuela y esposa del General Juan Bautista Arismendi: "Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi". Se dice que estuve mucho tiempo detenida en ese calabozo oscuro y perdió la vida de su bebé ahí adentro, luego se la llevan a la Guaira - Venezuela, trasladándola después a Cadiz - España y luego el 3 de mayo de 1818 llega a Filadelfia donde le brindan amistad y apoyo. En ese mismo tiempo queda en libertad y facultad de fijar su residencia donde quisiera, lo que decide vivir en Caracas hasta el día de su muerte el 2 de junio de 1866. Sus restos fueron trasladados al Panteón Nacional el 24 de agosto de 1877 convirtiéndose en la primera mujer cuyos restos reposan allí.

In front of the dungeons there is a ramp to the top, which has 4 bastions at the corners and on the side facing the coast has 12 cannons, which protected the front of the entrance to the bay by pirates who wanted to expropriate or steal the wealth of Margarita Island (salt).

En frente de los calabozos hay una rampa hasta la parte superior, la cual posee 4 baluartes en las esquinas y en el lado que da hacia la costa posee 12 cañones, los cuales protegían el frente de la entrada a la bahía por piratas que querían expropiar o robar la riqueza de la Isla de Margarita (la sal).

At the time when the Spaniards ruled the island, they used cannons to defend it, since it was very rich because of the Salinas de Pampatar, its wealth at that time was the salt, since at that time there were no refreshments and this salt protected the temperature of the food, and with that same salt, they paid the workers and officials who took care of this fortress. That is where the name "Salarios" comes from.

En la época cuando los españoles gobernaban la isla, utilizaban los cañones para defenderla, ya que esta tenía mucha riqueza por las Salinas de Pampatar, su riqueza en ese entonces era la sal, ya que en esa época no habían refrigerios y esta sal protegía la temperatura de los alimentos, y con esa misma sal, se le pagaban a los trabajadores y funcionarios que cuidaban de esta fortaleza. De ahí viene el nombre "Salarios".

In these bastions they kept watch 24 hours a day and for that reason they never attacked the castle from a close distance, which prevented its structure from collapsing and that is why it is one of the best preserved castles in history.

En estos baluartes vigilaban las 24 horas y por esa razón nunca llegaron a atacar el castillo de una distancia cercana, lo que hizo que su estructura no se derrumbara y por eso viene siendo uno de los castillos mejor conservados en la historia.

Inside these sentry boxes you can see the writings of many people who were there for endless hours, days and nights. In this way they left their names written on the murals to be remembered until eternity.

Dentro de estas garitas pueden observar escrituras de muchísimas personas que estuvieron ahí interminables horas, días y noches. De esta manera dejaron sus nombres escritos en los murales para ser recordados hasta la eternidad.

Its spectacular view, today is one of the many reasons to visit this historic place with so many stories to hear. We can observe a 360º panorama of the island and the sea, to its left we have the Pampatar pier, where it is a total attraction for the children of Margarita, since they use it as a trampoline, jumping and having a nice day.

Su espectacular vista, hoy en día es una de las tantas razones por las cuales visitar este lugar tan histórico y con tantas historias que escuchar. Podemos observar un panorama 360 de la Isla y el mar, a su izquierda tenemos el muelle de Pampatar, donde es una total atracción para los niños margariteños, ya que la utilizan de trampolín lanzándose y pasando un día agradable.

When I see these photos, what I personally feel is many years of structure, history, people who were there defending what we visit today.

Al ver estas fotos, personalmente lo que me transmite es muchos años de estructura, historías, personas que estuvieron ahí defendiendo lo que hoy por hoy visitamos.

In its interior, a room was destined to put a kind of museum where valuable relic objects of the independence period are exhibited, such as: portraits, shields, weapons, paintings, among others.

En su interior, se destinó una habitación para poner una especie de museo donde se exhiben objetos de reliquia valiosa de la época independentista como: retratos, escudos, armas, cuadros, entre otros.

The coat of arms you see in the middle, is the first coat of arms of Caracas, Santiago de León de Caracas was granted by King Philip of Spain and was made in 1591. It is currently in the San Carlos de Borromeo Castle located in Margarita Island, Venezuela.

El escudo que ven en el medio, es el primer escudo de armas de Caracas, Santiago de León de Caracas fue concedido por el rey Felipe de España y fue realizado en el año 1591. Actualmente está en el Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo ubicado en la Isla de Margarita, Venezuela.

Currently, tourists who come to the island, do not fail to visit the Castle, as it is certainly a must stop, and now, the bastions, cannons and all those elements used at the time for protection, are now a great landscape and views to take beautiful pictures in a well preserved and historically iconic place to remember.

Actualmente, los turistas que vienen a la isla, no dejan de visitar el Castillo, ya que sin duda es una parada obligada, y ahora, los baluartes, cañones y todos esos elementos usados en su momento para protección, son ahora un gran paisaje y vistas para tomarse hermosas fotografías en un lugar bien conservado e históricamente icónico para recordar.

Originally the door that had the entrance was changed, I feel the only structure that has been modified, since the rest is still intact as it was in the past. I was told by the employees of the place, that the door weighed almost 3 tons.

Originalmente la puerta que tenía la entrada fue cambiada, siento la única estructura que ha sido modificada, ya que lo demás se sigue manteniendo intacto como lo era un pasado. Me comentaron los empleados del lugar, que puerta pesaba casi 3 toneladas.

In front of the castle, across the street there are 4 cannons and a church, in that same square there are typical Margarita fairs where they sell food, drinks, souvenirs and music. It is a very popular place on the island.
