MONOMAD: A Little Boy Plays An Antique Theodolite

avatar

A little boy wearing a typical Aceh hat is enthralled by an antique theodolite, which he recognizes as binoculars. He tried to aim at it, rotating the focus ring, his mind beckoning as if he were deciphering something about the antique.

The antique theodolite is part of the private collection of the Pedir Museum and is now on exhibit in a showroom in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, at the joint office of the @Pedir-Museum and the non-profit organization @Mapesa Aceh. I am a member of both of these organizations. The little boy is the son of Mapesa Aceh's chairman, who is familiar with the antiques in our museum collection. His son gets along well with me; so he didn't feel uneasy when I took pictures for him, he occasionally acted and wanted to check my shots.

I was astounded by the little boy's eagerness to learn new things.

What a precious object!
Leaving aside how accurate it might be, since it has most likely taken some hits and the axes of rotation might be crooked by a few hundredths, it would have been nice to explain to that child that with those same telescopes they were able to calculate the size of the earth, and that simply by measuring angles they could calculate distances...
Fascination of mathematics!

You are right, the purpose of the museum is as a place of education, I will convey this to the collection curator.

At that age it is normal to be so curious. What a pleasure to see these photos, I hope their thirst for knowledge never runs out.
