Discovering the tranquility At Padum: The Bardan Monestry, Zanskar River, Guru Padamsambhava and More
Radhe Radhe!
Let's explore Padun together, the only town and administrative centre in Zanskar which is on elevation of 11,998 feet. A month ago I along with my cousins, explored a few areas of Ladhak and I'm extremely excited to share the experience with you all.Started our journey from Manali and to more accurate, from Nagar we started our journey. It's a small town situated on the back of river Beas in kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. We travelled approx 700 kilometres to reach here crossing Ladakh and Kargil.
Manali is as beautiful beyond imagination, perfect for adventure sports such as hiking paragliding trekking and mountain biking. It is also known as the " Valley Of Gods" as it has numerous temples dedicated to the higher power.
As we stayed at nagar for a night, this is the view I woke up to and I couldn't believe my eyes. I was excited to see more so had my breakfast as started to get ready for the adventure.
I'm a selenophile so if you will see pictures of moon is almost every post. I love cresent moon as on that day is was visible clearly,so I took some pictures. So you guys know crescent moon signify love and fertility and it's been worn by lovers for eyon.
After driving for six hours, we finally reached Padum. The raod was so fascinating with spice of beautiful landscape that blessed our eyes and got enchanted in us for forever.
Finally we reached out destination for the day and goodness even in dream I can't imagine such a beautiful place exist. We were speechless.
As soon as we reached,we saw building at the top of mountain. With curiosity we asked a monk and he enlightened up about the Bardan Monestry. He mentioned that it was built during 17th century and it has large assembly hall in it which contains statue of Budha along with other Buddhist dieties and stupas made of clay, wood, bronze and copper. Also I was amazed to know and see that it has been built in single craig of rock.
Well there are few rules you have to follow while visiting a monestry such as taking off your shoes, don't take pictures without permission and don't drink and smoke. Well Buddhism is a way of life here therefore you will see number of hilltop monestries amid surreal landscape. The most you stare the beauty of this place more it unfolds. All I can see was beautiful sky high mountains and it was calm, drenched in absolute stillness.
It's not at all easy to visit these monestry, it requires a full proof plan and someone who is familiar. There were around 55 monks current living here and practice Buddhism.
All these historic Buddhist monastery, awe inspiring landscape and thrilling road made me more alive. God! How could I never visited this place earlier.
The vibe of this place is so good that your soul can tell you. Covered in yellow this place is magical and unique due to high altitude desert climate. There were few trees in this area along with some scrubby bushes.
Around the riverbank we did found some cultivated areas having wheat and barley. Well this area receive low rainfall and climate is harsh too, so you can grow much fruit and vegetables here.
The Zanskar River flows through this area and in Zanskar valley playing an important role in the daily life of people living here.
Originating from Zanskar range this river joins the Indus river and flows southwards. As the area around the river is cultivated so the river play an important role in irrigation and other agricultural practices. The beauty of river landscape is is key feature of Bardan Monestry.
Guru Padamsambhava is the one who introduced the tantric Buddhism in Tibet around 749 A.D. and you may be surprised to know that he born from a lotus flower in the Lake Danokosha. The name itself means lotus born. He is also considered as the founding master of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. This beautiful status is made up of clay and cement above at Bardan Gompa.
Near the town of Padum and outside the Sani monestry we again found status of Padamsambhava who is also known as Guru Rinpoche, holy precious teacher. He was an 8th century sage and it is believed that he meditate here in the caves, and also called the second Buddha. For adventure seekers like me this place is no less than heaven. Also all these pictures are taken by me with my camera Sony ZV-E10.
