The English monk Roger Bacon made a magnifying glass back in the 13th century. But I don’t know how many times it magnified the object and whether there were banana flies back then :)
People tried to enlarge objects even before our era, for example, Seneca had a glass ball filled with water to enlarge letters.

I am guessing there were banana flies somewhere - but where they were, who knows!
