Big Hill Trail hiking - My Actifit Report Card: June 9 2026
A very windy and cloudy day but great conditions for almost 5 miles hiking through the Aspen and pine forest on some of the aptly named Big Hill Trail network.

Lulu and I have hiked these winding trails several times through the years that we have been in Spearfish and I've runon them as well, yet the scenery always seems new and wonderful some 2000 feet higher in the hills.

Of course Lulu was having a great time trotting through the grass and taking in all of the scents out the forest and wide open pastures (a few deer ran ahead of us a few times but we're too far away for Lulu to care).
The strong winds and overcast sky meant that it was very comfortable and we kept up a good 20 minutes pace. The total elevation gain was about 400 feet but the climbs were long and gradual and the trail- while narrow - was easy enough and the signs made it easy to navigate.

Tomorrow I'm planning an ascent up nearby Crow Peak on a 6 plus mile up and back hike . Not a trip for Lulu but it should be a good workout.
Just to finish up here are a few photos of some of the wildflowers along the way.
Enjoy
