Siempre es emocionante ir a un evento por primera vez, mucho más cuando es su primera vez. El 17 de diciembre fue el primer GuaraFest, un evento que apenas está naciendo, desde la femineidad; es un proyecto inclusivo que busca abrir camino al arte hecho por mujeres, al cual históricamente se le ha negado el debido reconocimiento.

It's always exciting to go to an event for the first time, much more so when it is their first time. On December 17 was the first GuaraFest, an event that is just being born, from femininity; it is an inclusive project that seeks to open the way to art made by women, which historically has been denied due recognition.

Como su nombre lo indica, aunque no sea obvio para todos, es un evento centrado en el arte de las mujeres Barquisimetanas ¿Dónde dice eso? En la palabra "Guara" el cual es un gentilicio coloquial dado a las mujeres del estado Lara, cuya capitales Barquisimeto. Hablamos de pintura, escultura, dibujo, fotografía, poesía, música, cine, emprendimientos, es una puerta abierta a todo tipo de arte.

As its name indicates, although it may not be obvious to everyone, it is an event centered on the art of Barquisimetano women. Where does it say that? With the word "Guara," which is a demonym given to the women of the state of Lara, whose capital is Barquisimeto, we talk about painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, poetry, music, film, and entrepreneurship, which is an open door to all kinds of art.

El arte desarrollado aborda temáticas diversas, sin embargo, todas confluyen en visualizar y revelarse contra la discriminación y la violencia de género. Las artistas desarrollan sus obras desde a vivencia, muestran su propuesta sin censura del medio.

El evento contó con artistas trabajando en vivo, exhibición de pintura, escultura y fotografía, muestra de cortometrajes, poesía, stand de ventas, gastronomía y mucha música. Además no planea ser un evento anual, tendremos otro bastante cerca en marzo del 2023.

The art developed addresses diverse themes, however, they all converge in visualizing and revealing themselves against discrimination and gender violence. The artists develop their works from the experience, they show their proposal without censorship of the medium.

The event featured artists working live, an exhibition of painting, sculpture, and photography, short films, poetry, a sales booth, gastronomy, and lots of music. Besides, it is not planned to be an annual event, and we will have another one quite soon, in March 2023.

Mi amiga María Pernalete estuvo haciendo caricaturas en vivo, las ganancias son en apoyo a el profesor Joel Pacheco, gran artista y maestro de nuestra universidad. Ella domina bastante bien el dibujo académico, y a partir de allí ha explorado otros aspectos del arte, entre ellos la caricatura. Yo le encargué una también, pero le puse el reto más difícil, no le di una foto, sino que la hice dibujarme en vivo.

My friend María Pernalete was doing live caricatures; the proceeds were in support of Professor Joel Pacheco, a great artist and teacher at our university. She excels at academic drawing and has since moved on to other areas of art, including caricature. I commissioned one from her too, but I gave her the most difficult challenge, I didn't give her a photo; I made her draw me to live.

Otra amiga mía, MLuggo estuvo realizando una pintura en vivo. Ella es bastante activa en el arte, tiene bastante producción, entre encargos y sus propios estudios. Su arte está cargado de significado, es feminista, y viene no solo de la emocionalidad sino de la investigación, pues para adentrarse a los temas que aborda realizó entrevistas, fue a los lugares donde se desarrollaban los hechos, y todo fue plasmado en su trabajo de grado para la licenciatura.

Another friend of mine, MLuggo was doing live painting. She is quite active in art, she has quite a lot of production, between commissions and her own studies. Her art is loaded with meaning, it is feminist, and it comes not only from emotionality but also from research, because, in order to get into the topics she deals with, she conducted interviews, went to the places where the events took place, and everything was captured in her degree work for her bachelor's degree.

Las fotografías que vemos aquí son de la artista Michell_sm, quien es además una de las organizadoras del evento. Sus fotografías son autorretratos, eróticos. Yo no puedo explicarles su significado, solo puedo comentar que son retratos distintos a los que pudieran ser realizados desde una visión que no fuera la exploración personal. La instalación de las obras además fue interactiva; al final del evento pudimos llevarnos las obras en miniatura que se ven al rededor de las más grandes, yo tengo dos de ellas conmigo de hecho.

The photographs you see here are by the artist Michell_sm, who is also one of the organizers of the event. Her photographs are self-portraits, and erotic. I cannot explain their meaning; I can only comment that they are portraits different from those that could be made from a vision other than personal exploration. The installation of the works was also interactive; at the end of the event, we were able to take away the miniature works that are seen around the larger ones; I actually have two of them with me.

Las primeras cantantes, aunque me gustaron, no tengo mucha información de ellas, probablemente porque están iniciando, para algunas esta fue su primera o segunda aparición en público. Les compartiré las fotografías que tomé junto a sus nombres y enlace a sus redes sociales.

Se nota que están iniciando, y no lo digo solo por su falta de experiencia en el escenario, sino por la emoción que mostraban al recibir los aplausos, los nervios estaban a flor de piel, y espero más adelante, para el siguiente GuaraFest, saber más de su música, que se presenten de nuevo, y poder hablarles un poco más sobre ellas. De momento, síganlas en sus redes, nos dedicamos a elevar aún más a personas con carreras ya hechas, podemos también impulsar a quienes están naciendo.

The first singers, although I liked them, I don't have much information about them, probably because they are just starting, for some of them this was their first or second appearance in public. I will share with you the pictures I took, along with their names and links to their socialmedia.

You can tell they are just starting out, and I'm not just saying that because of their lack of experience on stage, but because of the emotion they showed when they received the applause, Their nerves were on edge, and I hope later, for the next GuaraFest, to know more about their music, that they will perform again, and to be able to tell you a little more about them. Crisbel Carrera es una cantante y amiga de hace tiempo, de esas con las que normalmente no hablo pero es siempre emocionante verla, es una chica muy talentosa y muy dulce. Compone sus canciones y son geniales. Además toca la guitarra. Su carrera es relativamente corta, pero fructífera, desde que empezó a salir al público por allá en 2018-2019, no ha parado, se la puede ver en muchos eventos y siempre elegante y profesional. Su música tiene una cualidad romántica, divertida, y sabe ganarse al público, interactuar en el escenario.

Crisbel Carrera is a singer and a longtime friend, one of those people I don't usually talk to but it's always exciting to see; she is a very talented and very sweet girl. She composes her songs, and they are great. She also plays the guitar. Her career is relatively short, but fruitful. Since she started going out to the public back in 2018-2019, she hasn't stopped, and can be seen at many events, always elegant and professional. Her music has a romantic quality, fun, and she knows how to win the audience, interact on stage.

La primera banda en tocar fue Shakti Band, me encantó que es una banda completamente femenina y que la baterista luce como baterista, ves al grupo y ya sabes cuál es.

Cuando tocó esta banda salí un momento a comprar algo de comer porque ya era tarde, no me perdí su música porque se escuchaba desde donde vendían la comida en los stand de ventas, pero no pude esperar a que terminaran de prepararlos, subí corriendo a oír, y cuando pensaba bajar a buscar mi comida ya lista, tocaron Zombie de The Cranberries, y lo hicieron con bastante intensidad, el uso de los instrumentos estuvo genial, todos gritábamos con el tara tara taararara... no sé pero creo que el que haya oído la canción sabe de que tara tara hablo jaja. El sonido falló al final y todos seguimos cantando, incluída la banda, y se aprecia que la vocalista volvió a repetir el final porque ese cierre tenía que hacerse bien.

The first band to play was Shakti Band. I loved that it was an all female band and the drummer looked like a drummer. You see the band and you know which one it is.

When this band played, I went out for a moment to buy something to eat because it was already late. I didn't miss their music because I could hear it from where they were selling the food in the stands, but I couldn't wait for them to finish preparing it, so I ran upstairs to listen, and when I was about to go downstairs to get my food ready, they played Zombie by The Cranberries, and they did it with a lot of intensity, the use of the instruments was great, and we were all screaming with the tara tara taarara taararara. ... I don't know but I think that whoever heard the song knows what tara tara I'm talking about haha. The sound failed at the end, and we all kept singing along, including the band, and we appreciated that the vocalist repeated the ending again because that closing had to be done right.

Una sorpresa para todos, incluso para las organizadoras, fue tener a la música, educadora y organizadora de comunidades, Mafer Bandola. Ella es originaria de Barquisimeto y se ha proyectado al mundo llevando el nombre de Venezuela en alto. Toca la bandola, y es la primera mujer en tocar la bandola eléctrica. Fue al evento como asistente, apoyando al proyecto GuaraFest, y una vez allí todo el mundo se emocionó al verla, pidieron que se presentara, y ella fue por su bandola y la tuvimos en concierto. Nunca había tenido la oportunidad de oírla en persona (este fue su primer concierto en la ciudad luego de 5 años) y realmente tiene una voz poderosa, y la bandola es un instrumento bastante peculiar que acompaña bien a muchos géneros musicales.

Tuvimos una anécdota muy graciosa, y es que ella toca con una banda, el proyecto musical LaDama, acompañada de otros instrumentos, y pues, cantó y tocó para nosotros un merengue, acompañada solo por su bandola, y nos dijo "Ese fue un merengue intelectual, ustedes se imaginan el acompañamiento" lo cual nos hizo reír a todos. Sonó sabroso de igual forma.

A surprise for everyone, including the organizers, was having the musician, educator, and community organizer, Mafer Bandola. She is originally from Barquisimeto and has projected herself to the world, taking the name of Venezuela to the next level. She plays the bandola, and is the first woman to play the electric bandola. She went to the event as an assistant, supporting the GuaraFest project, and once there, everyone was excited to see her, they asked her to perform, and she went for her bandola, and we had her in concert. I had never had the opportunity to hear her in person (this was her first concert in the city after 5 years) and she really has a powerful voice, and the bandola is quite a peculiar instrument that goes well with many musical genres.

We had a very funny anecdote, and that is that she plays with a band, the musical project LaDama, accompanied by other instruments, and well, she sang and played for us a merengue, accompanied only by her bandola, and she said, "That was an intellectual merengue, you can imagine the accompaniment," which made us all laugh. It sounded awesome anyway.

Hablando de formas, una de las bandas que se presentó tiene ese nombre, Formas es una banda local, con cinco años de trayectoria, y muchos fanáticos entre la asistencia. Su presencia en el escenario es bastante dinámica, se les nota el amor por lo que hacen, su música es bastante fresca, melodías muy limpias. Yo no sé nada de música, no esperen terminos técnicos jaja solo puedo decirles como sentí al escucharlos. Tocan canciones propias y hasta donde pude escuchar, inspiradas en experiencias cotidianas con las que podemos identificarnos.

Cerraron con una canción llamada "Despedida" y de este modo terminó también el evento.

Speaking of forms, one of the bands that was presented by that name, Formas, is a local band, with five years of experience, and many fans in attendance. Their stage presence is quite dynamic, you can feel their love for what they do, and their music is quite fresh, very clean melodies. I don't know anything about music, don't expect technical terms, haha I can only tell you how I felt listening to them. They play their own songs, and as far as I could tell, inspired by everyday experiences that we can identify with.

They closed with a song called "Despedida," and that was the end of the event.

Otra parte genial de este evento fue poder conectar con mis amistades de la universidad, no siempre podemos reunirnos por estar todas en diferentes etapas, este evento nos dio la oportunidad de vernos y compartir al rededor de un interés que todas tenemos en común y en un espacio seguro donde la charla no estuvo llevada por las autoridades de siempre, que usualmente son masculinas y tienen ya muchos años en el medio, lo cual no es malo en sí mismo, pero suelen priorizar aspectos como la edad, años de experiencia, incluso status y el género (masculino) antes que al arte.

Another great aspect of this event was the opportunity to reconnect with my university friends; we don't always get to see each other because we are all at different stages, but this event gave us the opportunity to see each other and share around an interest we all have in common in a safe space where the talk was not led by the usual authorities, who are usually male and have many years in the field, which is not bad in itself, but they usually prioritize aspects such as age, years of experience, even status, and gender (male) before art.

También pude bromear con ellas un poco. Mi pobre amiga María estuvo trabajando todo el evento realizando caricaturas, aquí ya estábamos por terminar el evento y seguía sacando encargos. Una guerrera.

Y si pueden ver mi pulsera, notarán que no podía dejar pasar el evento para hablar de HIVE a todas estas mujeres creadoras, que sé traerían contenido de valor a nuestra gran comunidad. Y de hecho poco a poco ya están comenzando a llegar. Espero pronto traerme a GuaraFest a la plataforma jaja.

Además de las muestras de arte, se presentaron varios emprendimientos llevados por mujeres, de ropa, bisutería, bolsos, comida, manualidades, entre otros. Muchos negocios que no conocía y se encuentran en la ciudad, solo que no en las calles que solemos caminar por el centro. Es bueno ver nuevas opciones y así poder apoyar a los pequeños negocios.

Nudologia, Colornela, Tiendagaja, Niajozstore, Embrujo, Paryus Café, La Caraqueña 2.0, Camilledoesart y mucho más.

Se contó también con la presencia de asociaciones dedicadas a procurar el bienestar emocional, social, físico y sexual de la mujer, tales como Alaplaf y Berenjena Empoderada

In addition to the art exhibits, there were several businesses run by women, including clothing, jewelry, handbags, food, and handicrafts, among others. Many businesses that I did not know and are in the city, just not on the streets that we usually walk downtown. It is good to see new options and thus be able to support small businesses.

Para finalizar, este evento fue promovido en la prensa regional, lo cual es algo genial, pues no solo los espacios culturales necesitan activarse, sino los medios de comunicación necesitan divulgar cuando este tipo de actividades positivas ocurren, para que como sociedad podamos educarnos, sanar y avanzar.
