Contra is definitely so much more than a basic run and gun. I loved watching people new to the game back in the day take on Contra like they would something like Commando. They quickly found out Contra was a completely different beast.
So fun, even today though my reflexes are not what they used to be, I can still hold my own against most of the game, and Super C (I can't hold a candle in Contra III or Hard Corps though).

When I was a kid, I owned Contra, Contra Force, and Super Contra, and I managed to 100% complete all three. They were the games I liked the most when I first got into the world of video games at the age of six.
I agree with you on Contra and Super C, I never had Contra Force though. I remember rocking those two Contra games with my childhood friend regularly. Great memories.
Contra Force is a bit different, though it doesn't lose the essence of the Contra series; the difference is that you can choose a character, and each one has a different weapon.
That actually sounds like it would add variety and challenge to the game. I will have to try it out sometime.
