Theologos, let's explore the authentic Greek village on the island of Thassos (GR)
Hello travelers
I'm sure many of you have heard about the beauty of the Greek islands, and I'm sure just as many of you have heard about the island of Thassos, so today's post will be very special, and yes, today we won't be going to a famous beach, but instead we'll be visiting an authentic Greek village.
Theologos, the former administrative capital of the island of Thassos, is now a village with just over 1,500 inhabitants, but in this village, time seems to stand still.
I found out about this place from the reviews I read. It seems that many tourists who want peace and quiet come and stay in this village, as there aren't many activities in the village.
Instead, a stroll through the narrow streets or even a hike to the two nearby waterfalls may be the main attraction. I haven't mentioned Greek cuisine because I'm sure you already know that Greece offers the best traditional dishes (in my opinion).
In Theologos, as always on the Greek island, we came by car. If you want to come here by car, you can do so without worrying about parking spaces. Right at the entrance to the village, there is a very large parking lot. When I say very large, I mean dozens, maybe even hundreds of parking spaces.
It seems that this village is very popular during the high season, and I like the idea of the locals to build a huge parking lot that can accommodate all the tourists.
That's what we did, we left the car in the parking lot, because it was already past six in the afternoon and the parking lot was almost empty.
However, I can say that we chose the perfect time of day for our visit here. It wasn't crowded, and we were able to enjoy a peaceful stroll through the narrow streets of the village.
Theologos (a brief presentation of the history of this village)
The name of the village translates as "Word of God" or "theologian," and the first mention of this settlement dates back to 1287 and belongs to the Byzantine emperor Andronikos Palaiologos II. Theologos served as the administrative capital of the island starting in 1455, developing considerably during the Ottoman occupation, but also later, after 1813, when it was ceded to Egypt.
In 1912, it returned to Greek possession, and in 1979, it became the cultural capital of the island of Thassos. Since then, strict rules have been implemented regarding the construction and restoration of buildings in Theologos.
In this way, the Greeks ensured that the historical and cultural values of the village would be preserved, as Theologos is undoubtedly one of the most charming traditional Greek villages on this island. That is why, today, you can admire quite a few old houses with traditional roofs here, in some cases, the structure of these buildings dating back to the 16th century.
Come with me and let's get lost in the streets of Theologos.
I am fascinated by the Greek atmosphere and the friendly people. I visited a few souvenir shops and bought some honey.
Even though most of the attractions were already closed when we arrived, we didn't hesitate to visit the Holy Church of Paraskevi and a monastery. As I mentioned above, they were closed, but that was no problem; we enjoyed their beauty from the outside.
