Hohensalzburg Fortress(Festung Hohensalzburg), impressive history behind the walls(Salzburg, Austria)
Hello travelers
I am happy to come to you with a new travel blog, and not just any place, today we will visit together a castle that is among the largest in Europe, a fortress that I hope will surprise me in a pleasant way.
But until we got to the fortress we hardly found a parking place, it seems that this small city (Salzburg) is extremely crowded, I saw tourists from many parts of the world, on the one hand that makes me happy to see that this place will be known in many places in the world and on the other hand excessive tourism can be harmful at some point.
We are walking in the streets near the fortress, if you are somehow in Salzburg and you want to visit the fortress, there are two ways to do it, you should know that the castle is located on top of a hill and the first option would be the funicular and the second option is walking which takes no more than twenty minutes, now the rest is up to each one how he/she wants to start his/her visit here.
We have chosen the first option we took the funicular, and for that we had to choose from several variants of tickets, we have purchased all-inclusive ticket that cost us 17,40euro/person, more the fortress can be visited throughout the year, I must specify that our visit here was in early August of 2023, probably the prices then and now have been updated so I advise you to check the official website.
Ready, we are in the funicular and start the ascent to the top of the hill, honestly even this trip is fabulous.
I noticed that this fortress also has a very large inner courtyard, but I saved that for last.
Some historical data.
Hohensalzburg Fortress was built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg and has since undergone numerous extensions and modifications. Thus, the ring wall around the castle was renewed during the first peasant uprisings and the first threat of the Turks in 1465-1485 and reinforced by Leonhard von Kutschach around 1500. Paris Lodron extended the medieval castle to the citadel, giving it a powerful outer ring of art set.
Over the centuries, the fortress became an important military base and was also used as a residence for Salzburg's archbishops. The fortress played an important role in the city's history and was also of strategic importance in the two world wars. The fortress is with over 7,000 m2, including the ramparts with over 14,000 m2 of built-up area, one of the largest castles in Europe.
Today, Hohensalzburg Fortress is a popular tourist destination and an important cultural site. Visitors can reach the fortress either on foot or by cable car. The fortress offers breathtaking views of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains.
The place is absolutely huge, so for a more efficient visit and not to miss any of the sights, I advise you to take a photo or scan the digital map of the fortress, it will be much easier.
Our first stop was the Observation Tower and in order to get there we had to scan our tickets, from this tower it looks like we can have a view of Salzburg, so come with me to see if that is so.
Our tour continues and our attention is drawn to an amazing part of the fortress, namely, the Prince's Chamber, the bakery, the weapons hall and many other interesting places, so don't wait and scroll the blog further.
I hope that what you have seen so far will be to your liking, and for the end of this blog I have left a few pictures of the inner courtyard, which is also stunning.
THE END!
