Hiking to the hut and the Ciucaș peak in Brasov county, Romania
It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. Edmund Hillary
Hi everyone
I hope you are well, ready for a new exploration.
Today we will hike together on a beautiful trail to the hut and Ciucas peak.
We go to Ciucas Peak which is the highest mountain peak in the Ciucas Mountains with a height of 1954 meters, I know maybe for some of you it is not such a spectacular height because in your country you have much higher mountains, but here comes the beauty of the route there.
The first stop will be at the Ciucas hut which is located in Prahova county, it is a bit strange that the hut is located in a different county than the Ciucas Peak which is located in Cheia Brasov county, but let's see how we got here.
Due to the distance of more than 450 km I decided to stay one night at some friends in Ploiesti, it was too hard to drive 6 hours and then do a mountain route and then 6 hours home, it was almost physically impossible to do that.
We woke up in the morning rested and ready for a hike up the mountain, we quickly did our homework on information on what might be the ways or routes up the mountain, to my surprise we found quite little data on that.
After a drive of about half an hour we arrive at the place that we found out on the internet that this is the starting point of the trail.
But, let me tell you, this is after doing the route and finding out more information, there are two possibilities to do the route to the hut or Ciucas peak.
The first option is the hardest one, meaning you need to be well equipped for the climb, to have enough food and water with you, to be in a very good physical shape because you will have to cover over 4km of a medium difficulty route, a large part of the route is an easy climb but there are some areas with steeper climbs where you will have to put more physical effort, but do not be afraid it is not impossible to do this route, I have seen many tourists who have chosen this way to climb the mountain, among the drawbacks would be that when you get to the mountain you will be tired, sweaty, but even so you can do the first part of the route to the hut after which you rest a little and resume your route to the top, you will definitely need a few good hours.
The second option is to call the Ciucas hut and tell them how many people you are and that you want to go up the mountain, they are ready with off-road vehicles and for 15lei/3euro/person/ride they will come for you.
From the time we called until the jeep arrived after us was a little over 15 minutes, the cars are prepared to carry about 10 people each, I saw two cars doing this route several times, do not be scared that you have to walk back because these cars are available for the return.
After we got in the jeep we took a forest road where public traffic is prohibited, it should be noted that to do this route you need a jeep, the scenery on the trails is an amazing one specific to the mountain area, sometimes even takes your breath away, after 15-20 minutes we reach the Ciucas hut, I specify that from the hut and until you reach the top of Ciucas must follow another route as spectacular.
Ciucaș Hut, an imposing building made of wood and stone, the entrance to the restaurant is through a barrel, everything is arranged in a rustic way, here you can relax breathing the fresh mountain air, a very strong ozone air, if in the meantime you get hungry here you will find a restaurant with a very good food with a diversified menu, I even recommend you to choose to dine on one of the specially arranged places near the hut, something dreamy.
Maybe we're crazy, but we sat on a swing for minutes looking up at the mountain, and seeing that others wanted to stay there we moved to another beautiful place.
After resting we slowly made our way to the top of Ciucaș, here the route is an average one but towards the end it is a bit harder, as for the landscape until we reach the final point I let you decide.
The hike to the top is breathtaking when you have to keep climbing through some very large rocks, from what I noticed there were a few tourists who had a faster pace of climbing (it looked like they had missed a train) but we climbed as best we could, you realize that as people who work all day at the office, we are not so fit, but we don't give up.
When we did this hike I can say that the trail was quite crowded, very important if you decide to do this route to take enough water in your backpack because on the trail you have nowhere to get water, and staying without water is not very comfortable, otherwise good luck climbing.
Dear travellers, this was our hike today to the Ciucas hut and summit.
