I had been waiting for these conditions literally for years. I finally wanted to photograph Graz in heavy snowfall, but winter after winter had been virtually snowless in recent years. When I looked out of the window yesterday morning, I thought, “It's now or never!” I grabbed my camera and umbrella and headed straight out into the wintery weather. It was actually my very first photo tour in the snow ever. And it turned out to be much more challenging than I had imagined. Optimistic as I am, I screwed on my small, lightweight 85mm lens, which is not weatherproof. This allowed me to take photos with the camera in one hand and the umbrella in the other. However, I didn't take into account that the weather was a bit stormy and the snow was whipping almost directly at my body and thus also at the camera. I tried to hold it under my arm when I wasn't taking pictures, but it still got wet and I was constantly worried about whether it would survive. It did, but the next problem was that water droplets formed on the lens, of course. This in turn hindered the autofocus, which was already struggling with the snowflakes and was therefore anything but reliable. I hadn't packed a microfiber cloth to wipe the lens aperture, so I came home with lots of out-of-focus pictures, some of which fortunately still had the desired effect. Looking back, I probably should have used one of my weathersealed lenses, left the umbrella at home, and kept both hands free to regularly wipe the water droplets off the lens and focus better – perhaps using semi-manual focus. But as the saying goes, hindsight is always 20/20. I hope you like the pictures anyway. There are more to come, and then I'll tell you about the challenges of post-processing snow photos.

Buchstäblich Jahre lang hatte ich auf diese Bedingungen gewartet. Ich wollte Graz endlich im dichten Schneefall fotografieren, doch Winter um Winter blieben so gut wie schneelos in den vergangenen Jahren. Als ich gestern morgen aus dem Fenster schaute, dachte ich "Jetzt oder nie!", schnappte meine Kamera und meinen Regenschirm und dann ging es direkt hinein in das winterliche Treiben. Es war tatsächlich meine allererste Foto-Tour im Schnee überhaupt. Und diese gestaltete sich wesentlich herausfordernder, als ich es mir vorgestellt hatte. Optimistisch wie ich bin, schraubte ich mein kleines, leichtes 85mm-Objektiv auf, das jedoch nicht gegen Nässe abgedichtet ist. So konnte ich mit der Kamera in einer und dem Schirm in der anderen Hand fotografieren. Was ich jedoch nicht berücksichtigte: Das Wetter war etwas stürmisch und peitschte mir den Schnee teilweise fast frontal an den Körper und somit auch die Kamera. Ich versuchte sie unter dem Arm zu halten, wenn ich nicht gerade fotografierte, aber trotzdem wurde sie nass und ich war in ständiger Sorge, ob sie wohl alles gut überstehen würde. Das tat sie aber das nächste Problem war, dass sich natürlich auch Wassertropfen an der Linse bildeten. Dies behinderte wiederum den Autofokus, der ohnehin bereits mit den Schneeflocken zu kämpfen hatte und somit alles andere als zuverlässig funktionierte. Ein Mikorofasertuch, um die Objektivöffnung abzuwischen hatte ich nicht eingepackt und so kam ich mit vielen falsch fokussierten Bildern nach Hause, die zum Glück teilweise ihre Wirkung trotzdem nicht verfehlten. Rückblickend hätte ich wohl lieber eines meiner wetterfesten Objektive verwendet, die Regenschirm zuhause gelassen und stattdessen beide Hände frei gehabt, um die Linse regelmäßig von den Wassertropfen zu befreien und besser – eventuell halbmanuell fokussieren zu können. Aber wie heißt es so schön: Hinterher ist man immer gescheiter. Ich hoffe, die Bilder gefallen euch trotzdem.
