The first rains of the year here in Thailand are usually quickly followed by an evening eruption of flying termites. This always leads to a mad dash to close all windows and turn off inside lights to prevent the swarms getting inside. Nobody wants to be finding termite wings in their belongings for the next week.

But if you can step away from these practical concerns there’s a different side to the event. Go outside and stand amongst them. Bathe in their flutter. Be surrounded by a thousand beating wings all frantically but gently dancing in a beautiful, chaotic melee. I can recommend it, the blizzard will only last an hour or so and everybody else will be hiding indoors.
