Fun blocks, big cost - The LEGO Saga

avatar

Firstly, when you're young and don't work or your parents can't help you buy things, having an expensive hobby is tough. I loved Lego but couldn't afford it because I didn't even have a bank card. I only got to play with Lego when I visited my cousin who had a lot. So, I focused on reading, writing, and dancing, which didn't cost much. But when I started working in Austria, I could afford a bit of an expensive hobby, like mountain biking, thanks to my husband. It's pricey, but I love the thrill of it.

And then, a few years ago we were going shopping and I saw a Star Wars Lego set. I just went crazy. And my husband saw that. I actually never mentioned to him that I love building Lego and being honest I also already forgot this was something I always wanted to do, but there was never enough money. It’s a freaking expensive hobby. He said I should buy it, but I didn't want to. You know what kind of food and stuff for our apartment can I buy with this money? 80 euros for one small set was for me just too much. I was never a kid who wanted big stuff and expensive clothes, the only thing I gave money to and I never looked at the price was my shoes, I'm a big fan of All-star shoes, and when my mother bought me my first pair in middle school, I think I wore those for 5 years. So yeah, this was the only thing I wasn't watching on money. That was also part of why I already started to work in high school on the weekends, just to earn some money for going out, and to also buy myself shoes 😊 But let's rewind.

So, the next day I needed to work, and in the evening when I came home, on the bed was a big box. And he said open it. I didn't know what was waiting for me, and it's not even my birthday today. After opening it, I was jumping like a little kid. He bought me my first Star Wars Lego head collection set. You can't imagine my happiness. But then, what the hell man, after building this you think I will stop and never ever buy another? He reminded me how I always supported his hobbies, so he thought it was time I bought something for myself. I hesitated because Lego is expensive, but he encouraged me to treat myself. I was working and I still wouldn't buy something just for me? So I said to him, “I think you made a mistake. Did you see how expensive this hobby is?” But he still insisted, I'm a grown-up woman, with a good job, and without kids, why not spend money on myself? Oh boy, he didn't know what was waiting for him.

So, I decided to buy one Lego set each month, starting with a head collection. But I needed to control myself because spending 80 euros on a few hours of joy seems crazy. I've already bought all the sets I can afford, and now it's getting even more expensive. Plus, there is also one problem, I live in an apartment, and I don't have enough space for my whole collection, and with my husband's Hot Wheels collections, this is becoming a big problem. And also, I have a big collection of my books. Yes, with only one sleeping room and living room, there is definitely not enough space.

But hoo, I can do that all day if I want to. My mind is focused on only this and I don't have time to think about anything else, this is helpful when my health is not in the best state.

Second problem? I already bought every set that is possible to buy with my budget. Now it's getting more and more expensive.

I decided now was the time to stop a little bit. This year I won't buy any new Lego set (I hope), but every month I'm putting aside some money from my pay, and when I have enough I'm buying my dream set – Star Wars Millennium Falcon. I'll make space for it by building a coffee table with a glass cover to display it. I already looked up for ideas and I love it. And just so you know, I also built the coffee table that we are using now 😊 So, not a big problem 😉

Regardless of not buying any Lego this year or until I have enough money to buy my dream set, I still have Lego sets I received from my husband for Christmas gifts – Chewbacca, and last time I was cleaning, two heads fell on the floor, so I need to rebuild these two also. It's a little bit catchy because now are the two heads set mixed together and it's a pain in the ass knowing which part is from which set. But, I still have something to build.

So, that's my story! And just so you know, I'm a huge fan of Star Wars (I love the first trilogy), Indiana Jones, and Marvel, so Lego knows which set they need to sell for me to buy it 🙂

Someone once told me that I was 12 inside. The only thing 12-year-olds crave is more Lego. Lego is fun; it's therapeutic. It's a beautiful sensation when you click the pieces together. - James May

Oh wow! I thought I was the weird one geeking out on Lego's that are out today, but the price is with it as well. Beautiful collection!
I agree, I'm also a Hot Wheels guys, for buying and for giving away for presents :)
I'd love to see husband's collection, looking to find old Mercedes 500e or an ordinary W124, a bit rare
Thank you for sharing!

Oh boy, if the Lego community sees that you wrote "Lego’s" instead of "Lego," you'll be banned for life from the Lego community. 😂 That's a big deal. 😂 Are you ready to see this collection?

😂 But that's not all! If you call in the next 5 minutes, you can also see the collection in the bedroom😂😂 I will ask him for those cars;)

Wow, wooow, I didn't expect all that rare collection, amazing!
I can say with 95% accurate guess that one of you two drives a VW 😄
Where does he get these?
Of course collection isn't on point without a pokemon card🤣 I like it

My tiny collection is more a mix of rally / JDM and one day hopefully I find a factory fresh old Mercedes, trying to save up but lately all goes in real sized VW with nearly 500k km :)

Wishing you two a great sunny week ahead!

He began with just an NFT collection, but it didn't end there, he orders on Mattel site 😂 Oh, we don't have a VW, but my dream car is a Beetle, so maybe someday if there's an electric version. We have a big car, because yeah...two bikes, a dog... 😂small cars aren't really an option here 😂 Thanks for the well wishes. Three days of work, then a free Friday and another work weekend... so I hope your week is better than mine 😂

Oh I see.. guess I'm the weird one randomly checking out in stores from time to time 😂
Awesome! Beetle is a legend, out of hundreds of car's I've had a chance to drive, Bug wasn't one of them, yet!
I'll be honest it is, can enjoy for some time, till I start working again
Guessing your work includes working , helping people ?
Thank you :)

Oh, believe me, you're not the only one 😂 Have you never seen people in Teddy with two carts, digging deep in the box where the Hot Wheels are? 😂 If you ever see someone, it's either me, my husband, or a hundred other people on the treasure hunt 😂😂 If you find them, they're only €1.50, but you can sell them for €15-20 😂 So yes, it's a treasure hunt every second month in every Teddy possible 😂 And yes, I work with people :)

Never saw anyone, but also didn't know Teddy has it so much cheaper. I do have a taste for rare cool looking cars though, ha I knew it, even before you made a post about your job! 😆 I am really looking for a W124 Mercedes though, I saw 'fresh from factory' E500 I'm dreaming of

This is a Mercedes 560, but I'm working right now, so when I'm home, I'll send you a photo of the 500 😉 but I believe you want to have a real one, not Hot weels 😂

Omg where do you find these ??
Finding the hotwheels version, could be a seed to plant for the bigger one :)
My father had his W124 and was his favorite car in his life, I also felt like a president riding in it, and was the lowest spec possible haha

Yeah, that's why I asked if you've never seen people in different shops digging in the Hot Wheels box 😂 Once a month, we go to different shops and look through the boxes...it's a treasure hunt 😂 It's worth it, some of them are really expensive when you sell them :) Oh, I know too much about this. What's wrong with me 😂😂 I'm not so young anymore, but there's still a child in me 😂
But it's funny how before young people never appreciate vintage cars, but now when they see prices, everyone wants to have it 🤦‍♀️ my neighbour had old beetle when I was young and I was always so happy driving in it, just like you said, like president :) and then few years ago I meet my friend and her boyfriend has old red beetle...I was going crazy 😂 He needed to drive me, there was no other option for him 😂 Im making plans to make some good videos with drone while me and my friend driving...im really intresting how does videos will look like 🤔

Guessing I'm the weird one, but when I see something, I buy it, did give away few to nephews, that would look amazing!
I dare you two to do a short video :)

Yes, they are the perfect gift for kids. I'm lucky, all my friends have little boys, so they're always happy with those gifts, and I don't need to complicate things 😂 Oh, believe me, we will make this video, but first, we need to have a long conversation with her boyfriend to approve two women driving his baby car 😂 I hope I will be the one driving 😂 I'm the careful one, and she is a freaking reckless driver 🤔

I don't remember ever being in one, a few relatives had it way over 20 years ago, I've driven in many different cars, drove hundreds of fresh new cars, but nothing comes close too the old classics.
Better be the smart and safe behind the wheel, than sorry :)

Perhaps when I move back to Slovenia, I'll have a chance to buy an electric beetle 😂 But at the moment, it doesn't seem like they'll manufacture it 🤔 but I'm still holding onto hope 😂

There are companies rebuilding them and making 'bolt on' conversion kit's for the old Beetle :)

So, I'm a girl and I don't think I completely understand what you mean with this 😂 Are they taking parts from other cars and using them for old beetles? 🤔 I also translated this sentence, but I'm still not sure what you mean 😂 Please don't laugh 😂

There are companies out there that similar to engine swapping, they are converting Beetles and other types of classic's to electric power with electro motor. Bolt on is something you buy in the shop and bolt right up like it was meant to be for it. To bolt right on Beetle without your need of fabricating, welding... You, well a mechanic can easly put everything together.

Of course Beetle was made to be simple enough that everyone were their own mechanics back in the old days. So yes, there is a possibility, Try and google it up :)

I understand now 😂 google helps 😂What happened to me yesterday, I still can't believe it 😂 I've never driven an old car, and then yesterday, I'm driving to the store, and there's a Golf 1 on the road. I see a guy standing outside, so I stop and ask him if there's something wrong. He says the car won't turn on. Then I sit in the car, and he pushes me so we manage to start it up 😂😂 How easy is this to drive 😂 A really perfect old-timer :)) So now I'm ready to drive the Beetle 💪

Amazing experience it must have been! Good to hear you two managed to get it running again, guessing it wasn't a regular golf, but aye a perfect example.

It was a Golf 1 from the year 1974 💪I was looking at the prices, and they are not cheap, so I believe it's a great investment, of course, if you have time to repair it every now and then 😂

Oo lovely, ha time, tools, repairs and garage storage all cost a lot as well :)
I had a very rare Passat G60 from 1990 that was more like a project and sadly didn't find a garage for it, but grateful I found a perfect match to daily driving

Happy for you that you got a taste of old classic car, how did the door closing, opening feel? 😄

Having an old car is pretty expensive now. Oh, opening the door? Just like on a Yugo!😂 those were the cars of my childhood ☺️

Hehe all mechanical with clicks and bangs, it's funny in US they called Yugo the most unreliable car in the world, but they still run, work till today :)

I was watching a documentary about Yugoslavia and the space program... and apparently, the USA lent us money for this program, but Tito was lying, we didn't have any program 😂 So, we paid them back with Yugo cars 😂 Not so long ago, I had a Die Hard movie marathon, and then you see Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson driving a Yugo and cursing, "What is this for a car?... It's built to be economical, not for speed"😂
