Cheers to chaos - a Slovenian birthday tradition
Some days just have a big, bold circle on them. Like birthdays! But here’s the twist, my mother-in-law isn’t really into birthday parties. In the 13 years I’ve known her, she’s only celebrated once—on her 50th. And let’s just say, if my mom didn’t remind me, I’d probably forget half the family birthdays. She’s like my personal calendar with a smile.
This year, though, was a big one—my mother-in-law turned 60, and everyone knows that birthdays ending in zero call for a party, whether you’re into it or not. So, fresh off a week of sick leave, I had the perfect excuse: “Sorry, can’t dance, doctor’s orders!” 😆
Now, there’s a unique tradition here, at the crack of midnight on your birthday, the whole family sneaks to your house and throws a surprise parade, complete with decorations, music, and (of course) a good amount of alcohol. This isn’t your basic “knock, wake up, and leave” kind of visit. Oh no, it’s a full-on ambush.

This time, my mom, who’s a mastermind of sneaky plans, decided we’d start at 3 a.m. to throw her off. We tiptoed over, set up the decorations, gathered under her bedroom window, and our friend started playing a Slovenian classic on the harmonica. As we sang, we saw the lights turn off, so we casually relocated to the door and kept singing. She finally came out, all bleary-eyed and disoriented, saying, “I was waiting for you at midnight! What took you so long?” 😂

And of course, we had to toast with wine. Cold weather? Who cares! When my family starts drinking, it could be snowing, and they’d be out there dancing. Eventually, they got inside to warm up while they partied on until dawn.

They finally called it quits around 6 a.m. so they could rest up before round two. Before they went home, they still needed to dance outside to wake up all the neighbors. My mother-in-law wasn’t exactly thrilled about our midnight raid, but you could tell she secretly loved it.

By the time the “real” party started later that day, I was on maybe three hours of sleep and figured, surely we’ll eat first and then drink, right? Wrong. The music cranked up, drinks started flowing, and everyone hit the dance floor.

When the food finally arrived, it was like fuel to the fire, and the dancing got even wilder. I stayed on the sidelines, taking photos and laughing as my husband got dragged onto the dance floor by a parade of tipsy aunts. The look on his face was priceless!

As the night wore on, my brother, the designated driver, threw in the towel around 10 p.m. I promised my parents I’d drive them home when they were ready, but an hour later, my dad tapped me on the shoulder saying, “It’s time. I’m done!” Once I got them home, I turned around to see them pouring another round of whiskey in the kitchen. “Weren’t you done drinking?” I asked. My dad just shrugged and said, “Hey, I’m home now. Bed’s right there!” 😂

In the end, it was one of those beautiful family days you can’t help but cherish. Family is everything, and having two big, loud, happy ones makes life so much richer. Here’s to celebrating every chance we get and to being a part of this big, crazy family. Cheers to that! 🥂

oh wow that's the same for Chinese culture here. We got big celebrations for the 60 70 80. We don't do the crack of midnight though. Usually just eat at a chinese restaurant with all the family
Yes, those milestone numbers are also a big deal here, and we have some pretty crazy traditions! 😂 Thanks for stopping by :) and thank you for mentioning Chinese food, I need to order now 😂
aye you know it. you guys go all out though midnight! for the chinese elderly usually they are already asleep xD I can't say all but most :P. Good chinese food but get real one not like panda express xD
Oh, our elderly people party more than we do! The "young" generation isn’t as interested in that kind of stuff…but our parents don’t accept "no" for an answer. We have to go 😂. Watching my drunk family makes me laugh like crazy 😂. We don’t have Panda Express in Austria, I saw one in Germany, but not here. In my town, we have one restaurant that’s really good, especially the chicken or rice with vegetables :) But still, I hope to visit China in the future and try the authentic food! :)
woah O.O your elderly are built different haha. It's probably an Austria thing or europe thing. I don't really drink never gotten into that.
Oh that's cool. Is that restaurant ran by Chinese people? Ya for sure if you want to try the real authentic thing you gotta visit China. If I'm not wrong, in western countries they will adjust the taste to accommodate the market there
Yeah our parents and alcohol is normal combination. Never took alcohol away from our family, or they will never ever speak to me 😂 The restaurant is run by Chinese people. They already know me and my specific order when I come in. 😂 I'm in love with this type of food, and I've tried almost every Chinese restaurant in Graz, but this one near me is just so delicious. :) I always say I'm going to China just for the food! 😂
O.O I see. I think for Chinese families it's more gambling like mahjong etc but I didn't get into that fortunately
wow that's cool they know what you want. Have you tried everything on the menu?
Oh boy, I didn’t try everything on the menu,it’s just impossible to taste it all! 😂 Maybe in a few years, I’ll succeed in trying everything. 😂 I love mahjong, but I’ve only ever played on an app, never with other people. :/
o.o its not impossible. just eat with family and share xd that way you can try more dishes
Oh I forgot how to play mahjong. I learned before though :')
My family still hasn’t tried Chinese food 😂, but sometimes at work, all the coworkers order from a Chinese restaurant and we share. The problem is that we almost always order a lot of similar dishes, so it’s truly impossible to try everything. :) Amm, how can you forget to play this game? 😂😂
Owh I see. So what do you guys usually order? If they have peking duck you should get that.
um because I played it but then didn't play it in a long time @_@
Fried noodles with crispy chicken and sauce, chicken with bamboo shoots and mushrooms, and of course, dragon roll 😂😂. Peking duck is also great 👌. Is this your favorite? 🤔
How could you forget how to play? It's the easiest game ever 😂
Woah that's a lot. hmmmm dragon roll nani is that? That seems like Japanese food lol . Um I like a lot of stuff.
White chicken poached with some ginger scallion sauce. um classic egg onion omelette. Sharkfin soup. I can't seem to think lol. I also like spinach with garlic.
I do like Japanese and korean food more though xD
Yeah, I also think this is Japanese, but maybe our restaurant here is creating a mix for us to try different Asian foods. They might assume we don’t know the difference between Japanese and Chinese cuisine. :) But I have to admit, I’ve never cooked anything like this before, maybe it’s time to give it a try!
OMaybe it is . I have no idea! I prefer Japanese food even though I'm Chinese :D. Gotta love my sushi especially the salmon sashimi.
Maybe you should give it a try. I still need to learn how to cook haha. I cant cook for my life only maybe basic stuff
I think it is time for you to start cooking ;) Or maybe, you're not living alone? ;)
o.o I'm not living alone at the moment maybe in future
Oh, then you definitely need to learn how to cook :)) Or you will be eating fast food forever ;))
oh I will when the time is right :D. I try not to eat fast food :)
Ok, I need to ask…how old are you? 😂
im 28 D: is this too young
Too old to not know how to cook 😂 But hey, my brother is 28, and all he can cook is pasta with store-bought sauce 😂. Maybe I wouldn’t know how to cook properly either, but I moved out when I was 24, so I had to learn, there was no other option! 😂
Hey now I moved out when I was 18. it was prob a good time to learn but that time i rented from this young couple one room and they were pigsty messy. kitchen was unusable :'). It's ok i will have time to learn im still young. need to learn to cook for that future gf /wife O.O
Oh, how nice, a man who wants to learn how to cook for his partner. 😉 I think this was also my motivation to learn how to cook better for my husband. 😉 He was so skinny when we met, but now... yeah! 😄 I need to buy him new clothes. 😂
o.o yes but its also for myself haha. I like food so I wanna be able to make my own food and experiment. inspired by guga foods and hells kitchen and master chef hoho.
Oh no what did you do to him. you made him fat :(
love Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef! ☺️☺️ But sometimes I’m not 100 percent sure if everything they cook is as good as they say. All the different ingredients they use and mix together seem, to me, sometimes impossible to imagine tasting good. 😂 Maybe in the future, we’ll both cook like pro chefs 😂 or like Gordon Ramsay! 😂
Hjaaa, this was my mission because, when I met him, his pants were too small for ME! This was really not acceptable to me. 😂
o.o I think it is. we just don't expect it to taste good. I guess you should try to replicate the dish and I found out for us :D. You have the experience cooking im sure you can make i thappen.
Yes I will cook like a pro like a home kitchen pro O.O. I want to make it look like fine dining level. I'll cook it up.
Woah his pants were smaller than you O.O. Why not your mission to lose weight :P
Haha, he was really skinny, and I was skinny too. But, you know, women have curves, and men don’t! 😂 Oh, and I forgot to mention—they were almost too small for me! 😂 And hey, here’s a tip for the future, never tell a woman she needs to lose weight. Just don’t do it! 😂😂
i see ;x. haha I wouldn't tell them that. I would just bring them to exercise :)
Oh wow, I'm not sure this is a good idea. 😂 But you know, love is love. It doesn't matter how the love of your life look…what’s important is that she loves you with all her heart and can see beyond your mistakes and imperfections. ;) But hey, you can still go to the gym and meet a woman there… then you won’t have a problem. 😂
haha Never know. I never dated before so I don't know . Mostly focusing on myself now. I actually didn't go to gym :x but I will probalby in future. need to build some muscle so I can gain weight
Haha, it's so funny to see when men are talking that they need to go to the gym because they need to gain weight, not lose it 😂 oh boy, you have the whole future before you. You will meet the right woman :) I didn't look for my husband. He walked to the apartment that I lived in with some of our friends we both know, and it was love at first sight :)) You never know where your future wife is hiding;)
o.o well i need to make muscle so its gaining good weight. if not i just have fats mostly. Ya im sure ill meet the right women eventually one day one day. Yes I have no idea where she is hiding hopefully she comes out of the closet soon
