Lan Ha Bay – Northern Vietnam’s Hidden Gem
Hello Hivers! This July, I had the chance to visit Lan Ha Bay. While many of you might already know about Ha Long Bay – one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World recognized by UNESCO – Lan Ha Bay is part of the same bay complex and was officially separated in 1987. Lan Ha Bay boasts a majestic beauty with towering limestone mountains and emerald green waters. In my opinion, it deserves to be called the most beautiful island bay in Northern Vietnam. Let's explore Lan Ha Bay with me through this post.
The best time to visit Lan Ha Bay is during the summer, from April to August, when the weather is sunny and there’s little chance of storms. From mainland Hai Phong, you’ll take a 30-minute ferry ride to Cat Ba Island, followed by a 30-minute canoe trip to reach Lan Ha Bay. The bay is also home to many pristine beaches like Ba Trai Dao Beach and the Twin-sided Beach.
The name Lan Ha comes from a type of white orchid that blooms on the high mountains during summer – a name that’s both romantic and beautiful. I took a canoe with 17 people and arrived at Ba Trai Dao Beach in Lan Ha Bay at 4 p.m. The beach had fine white sand and was scattered with seashells and conch shells. I picked some up and noticed they came in various colors – like a miniature collection from the ocean. On the beach were also unique black rocks with intriguing shapes.
One of the most special moments of the trip was paddleboarding on the calm sea during sunset. It felt like it was just me and the vastness of nature. Mother Nature felt like a protective, healing presence.
I used to be skeptical about beaches in Northern Vietnam because of the murky waters – until I set foot in Lan Ha Bay.
I’ll definitely return to Lan Ha in future summers. If you're looking to explore one of the most beautiful bays in Vietnam, Lan Ha Bay will surely offer you an unforgettable experience.
Thank you so much for reading my post today. Wish you a woderful week ahead.
