Snow-covered Lake Van, Tatvan Coast, Turkey

In Türkiye, there are no seas in the interior regions, particularly in the east and southeast. Instead, there are numerous lakes. Lake Van is the largest lake in Türkiye. It's so large that it borders eight districts. I've visited each of these districts several times to experience them firsthand. The most beautiful border is with Edremit in Van and Tatvan in Bitlis. In this post, I want to share some photos I recently took on the Tatvan coast.

Türkiye'de iç bölgelerde, doğu ve güneydoğu bölgesinde deniz yok. Denizin yerinde çok sayıda göl var. Van Gölü, Türkiye'nin en büyük gölü. O kadar büyük ki tam tamına 8 ilçe ile sınırı var. Sınırları olan ilçeleri bir kaç defa tek tek gezerek deneyimledim. En güzel sınırı Van'da bulunan Edremit ile Bitlis'te bulunan Tatvan ile. Bu gönderimde yakın zamanda çektiğim Tatvan sahilinde çektiğim fotoğrafları sizlerle paylaşmak istiyorum.

Due to drought, the water level of Lake Van is decreasing every year. We can see a significant decrease in water level between the previous year and the following year. Decreased rainfall, faulty irrigation, and rising temperatures are significantly reducing the water level. Snow falling in the winter months, snowmelt from the mountains flowing into the lake, and the streams and rivers feeding the lake give it some life.

Kuraklık nedeniyle Van Gölü'nün su seviyesi her geçen yıl azalıyor. Bir önceki yıl ile sonraki yıl arasında ciddi bir su azalması görebiliyoruz. Yağışların azalması, hatalı sulama, sıcaklıkların artması su seviyesini önemli ölçüde azaltıyor. Kış ayında yağan kar , dağlarda eriyip göle dökülen kar suları, gölü besleyen dere ve nehirler göle bir nebze de olsa hayat veriyor.

Two small springs flow from the town center into the lake. The drought is so severe that snowfall and the springs flowing into the lake are not preventing the lake level from decreasing.

İlçe merkezinden akıp göle karışan iki küçük kaynak. Kuraklık o kadar ciddi seviyede ki kar yağışları, göle akan kaynaklar göl seviyesinin azalmasına engel olmuyor.

As the water level receded, rock-like structures called microbialites emerged. Now completely on dry land, these microbialites can no longer grow and face the risk of disappearing. Scientists and divers occasionally discover microbialites here. It is said that the world's largest microbialites are found here. The microbialites on the Tatvan coast are very small; those on the Ahlat side are larger.

Su seviyesi azalınca mikrobiyalit denilen kayaç görünümlü yapılar ortaya çıktı. Artık tamamen karada kalan mikrobiyalitler artık büyüyemeyecek ve yok olma riski ile karşı karşıya kalacak. Bilim adamları , dalgıçlar zaman zaman burada mikrobiyalit keşiflerinde bulunuyor. Dünyanın en büyük mikrobiyatlerinin burada olduğu söylenir. Tatvan sahilindeki mikrobiyalitler çok küçük özellikle Ahlat tarafında bulunanlar daha büyük.

The beach was covered in snow, so apart from a few people like me who came to take photos, there weren't many people around. Nobody wanted to wade through the snow. Of course, that didn't stop those who wanted to experience romantic moments.

Sahil karla kaplı olduğu için benim gibi fotoğraf çekmeye gelen bir kaç kişi dışında pek kimseler yoktu. Kimse kara bata çıka yürümek istemiyor. Tabii bunlar romantik anlar yaşamak isteyenlere engel değil.

Although air temperatures are mostly below 0 degrees Celsius during the winter, the lake does not freeze due to its high soda content.

Kış boyunca hava sıcaklığı çoğunlukla 0 derecenin altında olmasına rağmen gölün sodalı olması nedeniyle göl buz tutmuyor.

I want to conclude this post with a short video. I hope Lake Van will return to its former water level as soon as possible. The lake, which posed a flood threat 30 years ago, is now struggling with drought.
