Growing lentils at home for 13 days

I love eating lentils, preferably as a soup, so I decided to give it a go and grow them in a pot at home.

Of course, I didn’t expect to harvest enough lentil grains to make a soup with, but I did it just for fun, and because I didn’t want to have an empty pot standing there without any plant in it.

The pot that I used had a basil plant that I didn’t manage to keep, and it died.

To be honest, I first tried to grow parsley from seeds in that pot, but the parsley seeds never grew into actual plants, probably because they had gone bad.

So recalling lentil growing experiments at home, back when I was a schoolboy, I immediately knew that growing lentils from seed was something like a safe bet, compared to growing other plants, such as parsley.

Day 1

This is the first day that I could actually see a lentil sprout, which made me very happy.

I can’t describe to you how rewarding it was to see this new life, especially after failing to make parsley seeds sprout in the past.

You can hardly notice the sprout, but it is there, on the right.

There are also some smaller sprouts in the upper half of the photo.

Day 2

In the second photo, you can now clearly see the sprouts coming out of soil.

Things have started looking good!

Day 3

The sprouts have begun to stretch themselves upwards, which makes me even happier.

Day 4

The sprouts have continued to enjoy healthy growth, and they look marvelous. The future is promising, since the young plants are very healthy and strong.

Day 5

The plants now have more leaves, and it’s astonishing how fast they keep growing.

Day 6

More and more stems and leaves keep popping up, and all of this has taken only 6 days.

It’s simply amazing!

Day 7

The lentil plants keep growing taller, which makes me think of using some sort of supporting structures to keep the plants standing straight.

Day 8

Even more growth takes place.

I like the fact that the plants have a nice green color, which is a strong sign of their health.

Day 9

This is a closer shot, which lets you see the plants better.

Day 10

At this point, I made the decision to use some wooden skewers to support the plants.

Although the plants were healthy and strong, they were still lentil plants, which means that can hold up to a certain weight of their own.

Day 11

Day 12

Day 13

This was the last day of my lentil growing experiment at home, and overall, I can say that it was a nice, rewarding experience to see these new plants growing from seed.

I hope you enjoyed the photos as much as I enjoyed growing lentils at home!
