Hello everyone! I hope you're all doing well as usual and that you're making good use of your time. I've put the internet to one side for a while and have been busy gardening instead. Some time ago, I received a book as a gift from a lady who probably assumed that I had green fingers. The book is called ‘Gärtner Pötschkes Großes Gartenbuch’ and is really instructive. It contains lyrical and poetic rhymes that are unfortunately only understandable in German. The German language offers such diversity in poetry and writing that it doesn't always translate one-to-one into English. Hmmmm...😏

Hallo zusammen! Ich hoffe, es geht euch wie immer gut, und ihr könnt eure Zeit sinnvoll nutzen. Ich habe das Internet ein wenig beiseite gelegt und mich stattdessen mit dem Thema Gartenarbeit beschäftigt. Vor einiger Zeit bekam ich ein Buch von einer Dame geschenkt, die wohl davon ausging, dass ich einen grünen Daumen habe. Das Buch heißt ‘Gärtner Pötschkes Großes Gartenbuch’ und ist wirklich lehrreich. Es enthält lyrisch-poetische Reime, die leider nur auf Deutsch verständlich sind. Die deutsche Sprache bietet eine solche Vielfalt in der Lyrik und im Schreibwesen, dass sie sich nicht immer eins zu eins ins Englische übersetzen lässt. Hmmmm…😏

Instead, I would like to introduce you to my new plant cutter, which helps me to relocate wild sunflowers - it works really well. I bought it second-hand and it really pays for itself. It goes deep enough into the soil to get the whole plant and root out without damaging it and I just have to apply a little sweat and hold the switch down when I push it into the soil. That's how I try to save the sunflowers. 💚

Stattdessen möchte ich euch meinen neuen Pflanzenausstecker vorstellen, der mir dabei hilft, wild gewachsene Sonnenblumen umzusiedeln – das funktioniert wirklich super. Er wurde gebraucht erworben und er macht sich wirklich bezahlt. Er kommt tief genug in die Erde um die ganze Pflanze mit Wurzel ohne beschädigung aus der Erde zu holen und ich muss einfach nur ein wenig schweis aufbringen und den Schalter gedrückt halten wenn ich ihn in die Erde drücke. So versuche ich die Sonnenblumen zu retten. 💚

And now I'll tell you about my newly planted bed. An Asian lettuce mix, celeriac and rocket have taken their place there. The mix is pretty wild, but as you know, lettuce always works. I haven't had any experience with the celeriac yet, but it's great for soups and breading. The seeds were so tiny that I can understand why they need to be pricked out. This method relies on more seeds in the field, and the stronger plants stay in the bed while the rest are removed. It breaks my heart when I prick out because I always have to choose the stronger plants and discard the weaker ones - it always makes me a little sad.’

Und nun erzähle ich euch etwas über mein neu angelegtes Beet. Dort haben eine Asia-Salatmischung, Knollensellerie und Rucola Platz genommen. Die Mischung ist ziemlich wild, aber Salat geht bekanntlich immer. Mit dem Knollensellerie habe ich noch keine Erfahrung gesammelt, aber er eignet sich toll für Suppen und zum Panieren. Die Saat war so winzig, dass ich verstehen kann, warum sie pikiert werden muss. Dieses Verfahren setzt auf mehr Saat im Acker, und die stärker gebildeten Pflanzen bleiben im Beet, während der Rest entfernt wird. Es bricht mir das Herz, wenn ich pikiere, weil ich mich dann immer für die stärkeren Pflanzen entscheiden muss und die schwächeren aussortiere – das macht mich immer ein wenig traurig.”

But the very first thing I had to do was to spend just under 2 hours laying out my garden carpet and clearing the weeds from the field so that the celeriac and lettuces would get a great start. As you can see, the weeds were plentiful and what was planted there didn't take off. The previous plan for cultivating the field was not very structured, but at the request of the previous farmer, I took it on. I'm not a professional myself, but sometimes I intuitively know how I should proceed.
And if need be, the great gardening book from Gärtner Pötschke still helps me. Cheers to the lady who gave it to me.

Was ich aber als allererstes tun musste, war, knapp 2 Stunden lang meinen Gartenteppich auszulegen und das Unkraut vom Acker zu entfernen, damit der Knollensellerie und die Salate einen tollen Start bekommen. Wie ihr sehen könnt, war das Unkraut reichlich vorhanden, und das, was dort gepflanzt wurde, ist nicht aufgegangen. Die vorherige Planung für die Bewirtschaftung des Ackers war nicht sehr strukturiert, aber auf Bitten des vorherigen Ackerwirts habe ich mich dem angenommen. Ich bin selbst kein Profi, aber manchmal weiß ich intuitiv, wie ich vorgehen sollte."
Und zur Not hilft mir immer noch das tolle Gartenbuch vom Gärtner Pötschke. Ein Hoch auf die Dame, die es mir geschenkt hat.
