Combining JV and varsity in the same race is a real test for pacing, it defnitely changes how kids go out early. Using 1 1000 with the 70 210 F4 makes sense for fast runners and and early light. I usually hate early mornings, coffee becomes the coach :) I dont blame you for being there so early for your son.

I'm not much of a photographer really. When trying to photograph action, I generally use shutter priority and just set it as fast as I can without it becoming too dark and let the camera handle the rest.
