a half-baked readership, February 12th

All these food images, this post shoulda went in the Foodies Bee Hive, but... I'm reflecting.

Paradox of Platforms

Noah thinks Tiktok has the potential to blow up and go viral. Twitter might serve as a way to alert, posting updates. He finds Patreon easier (than Hive) as well.

Liz thinks Instagram’s mainly for art and photography. I don’t quite agree. Tiktok might be the easiest out of every social media. Twitter is a shit show, but is possible. Either way, if you enjoy making the content, people will take notice and follow. But 1000 is a realistic goal.

All the platforms using algorithms now just want stuff you’ll engage with briefly, then move on, Lockwood chimed in. That type of algorithm will lead to a more shallow platform. This was my current issue with Instagram.

Jasmine finds it bizarre. She gets a large amount of memes and art on her Insta. (Abbreviations are all the rage.) Twitter is where she’s ‘most likely’ to see porn. I don’t ever see porn on Insta. What y’all be followin’? A fair question.

My friends and their takes highlight just some of the social media sentiment. I’m just not sure I want to cook up on another platform all of a sudden.

Must be baked thinking I'm gonna break bread with middlemen.

The Algorithm, an Abstract Concept

I just want to share in an organized, rewarding fashion. If my elite entourage remains on Hive, while my engaged but otherwise uninterested following remains on other platforms, so be it. I just think the game is SNAFU. Granted I only grew fed up consuming banal content online, I still reserve that if I don’t lead the way to stylish sharing- people will settle where it’s bland. I just want the right mix.

Pictured above, freelancers at the first ever meeting of Knomad, the web3 collective of freelancers.

WeWork, Networks, Freelance Work

The freelance collective known as Knomad meets again Wednesday. I met a video studio owner, copywriters at various career lengths and designers. A bunch of chefs with different cuisines, we could cook up something nice together. I wonder how they feel- we all share this characteristic.

We’re weak at marketing for ourselves. How do we sell our brand? Our service or goods? I also realized, as far as freelance photography foes- I am uncontracted. This presents a problem in pricing and negotiating which affects my bottomline- limiting how much I can create!

So, between tonight and Wednesday afternoon, I want to shore up these parts of my cooking. It was last week, with these cats, in fact, that I heard of the “1000 (true) fans” model.

The tasteless platforms could use a bit of zest. Users aren't eatin' right.

Not Only Fans, True Fans

The gist is 1000 folks who can pay you directly, need only purchase an average of $100 worth of your production a year to remain a float. The key is direct payment, I find, which is why I nominate Hive. I mean, imagine if I had a thousand stakers of a hundred bucks worth of HIVE? Their value’s embedded, but retrievable at will, and I get to use 100% of it, versus intermediaries and their damn pay cuts!

I don’t use Insufferable Insta and their marketplace to sell wares. I avoid Tactless Twitter and shilling a token or project. Patreon might as well be Pay_cut_reon cuz they shave off the top like a barber! But I get it. Risk aversion, ease of access, blah, blah, blah. If it’s too hard, they won’t come. You know what? I don’t care. If someone isn’t tolerant enough or informed enough, I’m quoting Satoshi Nakamoto:

“If you don’t believe it or don’t get it, I don’t have the time to try to convince you, sorry.”

Time’s precious. So is energy. Enough’s enough. I’m on some other stuff. The future’s now, and I’m not waiting for a readership not ready to accept the rising cost of inflation, the growing cost from intermediation, or the rapid change for the future of work and finance. So many more of us own businesses, 30% of work’s completely remote now, Stanford just published, so what am I laboring over likes for!? Your fire emoji doesn’t heat my house, fam. If you appreciate, delegate. Your Insta likes can take a hike.

A lot’s cooking here with the kid.

I'm not asking for anyone to bake me a cake, but... only one person wished me a happy birthday yesterday!

Post Summary

  • I'm reflecting a bit on this Super Bowl Sunday, if you're an American reader.
  • I consider the future of work and finance, marketing funnels and a reluctant to change, but ready for quality readership. How do I reconcile the two?
  • I think Twitter's the next platform only for its wide web3 literate community.
